Slums 2 is episode 2 engine`s mod. Nine maps, dark and creepy. Nothing innovative in gameplay, but still good regular shooter.

Slums 2 was created by only two men, who were inspired by Silent Hill, Condemned, FEAR games. Mod does not provide new weapons or some special features.

It was 2010 year when the last version of Slums was released. But today, when i got much more experience in level design and painting i decided to remake first 2 maps from original Slums mod (2007).

The first one map is half remaked and i will proceed to work on levels when i will get free time and inspiration. You will see absolutely new fresh and polished Slums with some gameplay and graphics changes, which should like everyone. Some areas (or maybe most of them) will be changed completely. Also, Slums will contain several new puzzles to solve.

The main goal is to make my mod more unique and far from HL2 style (while using HL2 weapons and hostile NPC`s).

Because it will be on 2013 Source engine you will not need to purchase any HL2 game. It will be absolutely free for everyone who have Steam and installed Source SDK 2013 Singleplayer tool (which is also for free).

Here are some screenshots.

finally i played the mod!

i must say its really good and i like it, nice graphics.
i played on normal and it was well balanced.

however, i had some problems with buildings (only outside) to show white with some other colors... i think its color correction! (but i think thats just my GPU being slow (Radeon 9600 series))...

in truth the only thing i did not like is that ending, when i saw ending not being at train i was happy coz i thought it will be something better, but soon after it just ends... i did not have a comment but i somehow liked ending in Slums 2 better. i thought that there will be some (kinda vision) where u see some zombie or stalker... and then instantly u realize it is a vision and combine punches u in tha head.

it ends (with nice music).

after that u hear his body being dragged and it says "to be continued..." :)

anyway mod was quite good, i think that u will still modify this mod and its story and after that maybe make even Slums 3!

Level design is actually pretty good. If i didn't knew better I'd say that these were some kind of leftovers from the original game that didn't made it into the final version.

Very rarely do I have almost NOTHING to criticize, and in this case there is at least nothing substantial. I will not take points off for lack of story or new gameplay, because it was described as it was, but in one point soon after I arrive on the surface for the first time, I somehow had to go quite a while without any ammo pickups at all, just grenades and crowbar with a tiny bit of pistol ammo. Besides that, a couple bits of the mapping was illogical (a zombie falls from a vent above me, I look up and it is totally sealed 4 walls there for no reason), but you even did better than most people do on map logic, so overall very great mapping, pacing, and general gameplay.

Very difficult - but fun. :)

Only thing that irritates me is that you can't turn the music volume down/up as it seems the game doesn't know the difference between the music and in-game sounds. :-/

Source plays music just like in-game regular sound. Maybe i just don`t know how to place music correctly.

@ Diolator
Yes but the options in source allow you to manually input sounds such as music and ambient noises into your mod. There you can give the user the option to turn the volume of different sounds up and down.

Good mod, but what the hell is with the damage on combines with shotguns? They can take you down with a single shot. Way to stressful to be fun - had to restart at the same checkpoint over and over on level one. A bit ridiculous having to carefully check every corner to make sure there isn't a combine with a shotgun. (which you pulled off way too much.)

Work on the AI placement, and hell, if this is meant to be fun lower the shotgun damage on the combines weapons..

You mean you're not going to make there be less combine shotgunners? :(

I would like it if there was less combine shotgunners!

Slums 2 is a fairly short, yet incredibly detailed mod. Gameplay mostly revolves around generic shooting. This may seem boring at first glance, but the general gunplay is from tried and proven Half-Life 2. AI placement is great, considering the cramped setting of the slums. The lack of a story definitely hurt the mod. Adding a simple plot line to explain the strange intro dream, and why the character is fighting his way out of the slums, would greatly increase the immersion. Atmosphere in this mod…

At first i found this mod quite interesting, nice level design, good atmosphere, but after the 5 minute mark I got bored there's no true mission, only shooting combine people like 'Painkiller'. Even then, with 'Painkiller' there were still interesting thing to do like find hidden collectible or get weapons that are interesting I mean, guys who developed Slums 2 you can at least put some new weapons or interesting scripted events which would have blown mind away. Overall it's derivative in nature…
