Situation Outbreak is an Orange Box mod about the impending zombie apocalypse. Armed with nothing but a 9mm and a pair of brass knuckles, you must do whatever it takes to survive against the thousands of zombies that used to be your friends and neighbors. The cost of failure is nothing less than your free will. There are no heroes. No single person can save the world and there are not enough bullets to go around. The only thing left to do is to kill the damned, hoping that you don’t end up like them.

Deadline: May be moved later at anytime as soon as a week before the date below, so check back often!

July 12, 2009 - Noon US EST (GMT -5)

Submission Email: This is the email you will send your map submissions to when you are done with them.

Please do not send anything to this email address other than 100% complete map submissions. Any questions should be asked here, on our mod page, or on our official website and forums. Failure to follow this very simple rule may result in the nullification of any past, present, or future map submissions from your email and/or IP address.

After submitting your map, do not expect a personal response until after the contest is over and the winner and runner-ups has been selected and announced. You will only receive a reply to your email if your map does not follow any one of the rules and regulations listed below or if you are a winner. For more information regarding things like this, please see the final notes towards the bottom of this page.

Rules & Regulations:

  • Everyone and anyone can enter at anytime, except after the deadline - obviously.
  • Any previously released map submissions for other mods or games will not be considered. Maps that you have been working on but have not yet released (WIPs), however, are allowed.
  • No maps may be submitted before June 1, 2009. Any maps received before this time will be considered spam, regardless if they are or not.
  • You may submit as many maps as you wish, but please note that spamming us with maps will not help you, and may in fact ruin your chances of winning.
  • You must not release your maps anywhere or to anyone else at anytime until the contest is over and the winner is chosen, especially if you submit multiple maps.
  • By submitting a map, you agree that if your submission is chosen as the winning map or as one of the two runner-ups, Agent Red Productions and the rest of the ZombieMod: Source development team have the right to use, edit, and distribute it as they wish, following your approval.
  • You cannot win twice; each winning map - first place and the two runner-ups - must have been created by a different individual for them to be considered valid. That being said, if one of your maps is found to be better than another, the one that is better will be the one that is considered first.
  • This contest uses rolling submission; we do not wait until all of the submissions are in before we make a decision. Instead, we choose a winning map when we feel we've found one. However, winning maps will not be announced until after the deadline. This isn't to rush you, but encourage healthy competition and to keep mappers working hard on their submissions.
  • Maps can be for any gamemode, but name must begin with the appropriate prefixes (i.e. Infection = zms_inf, Escape = zms_esc, etc).
  • Maps created by members of Agent Red Productions or by the rest of the ZombieMod: Source development team will not be considered, even if submitted.
  • It goes without saying - but we'll say it anyway - that you may only submit maps created by you and only you. Using other people's work is strictly prohibited, even if you have their permission to do so. This includes things like prefabs and WIPs.
  • Any custom content included in your map must either be packed into the map itself or be given to Agent Red Productions and the rest of the ZombieMod: Source development team in the form of a compressed .zip or .rar file, ready for extraction. Remember, this custom content must have been created by you and only you. Simply having permission to use something in your maps will not do, and your maps will be promptly invalidated upon submission.

FINAL NOTES:If just one map does not meet the above guidelines, we will email you. If you choose to ignore our email or not fix your map before the deadline, all your maps will be automatically invalidated and you will have no chance of winning. Therefore, it is very important that you read all of the rules and regulations above and check your email frequently after submitting a map, especially if you do so very close to the deadline.

We have plenty of mapping tutorials on our ModDB mod page and website to help you out, so use them! We also have forums on our website, so I'd use them as well. Also, you may consult other users and ZM:S developers at anytime as you please if you require assistance, but any and all developers reserve the right to deny you help you are spamming them or becoming a nuisance. Don't let it get to that point, though, especially over something as silly and fun as this! Remember, it's only a game...well, mod.

Best of luck, everyone! Have fun, and keep everyone updated on your progress...especially us!

I thought I'd join but decided not to after I read this:

This contest uses rolling submission; we do not wait until all of the submissions are in before we make a decision. Instead, we choose a winning map when we feel we've found one. However, winning maps will not be announced until after the deadline. This isn't to rush you, but encourage healthy competition and to keep mappers working hard on their submissions.

COME ON! That is just unfair, people most likely work really hard on their maps and finally, when they submit their masterpiece, the throne of being number one is already taken without it even being announced yet.

That is NOT how you "encourage healthy competition and keep mappers working hard"!

You're making it a much bigger deal than it is, and chances are, we won't actually find a map that we consider to be the greatest map we've ever seen before the deadline, mate...unless it's yours. =P

I agree with mischa_silden, that is a stupid idea! Great maps take long to make you know!

Guys, guys, once again, you're taking this much too literally. This regulation is reserved for truly amazing maps, and truly amazing maps - as you said dak1ll3r - take a long time to make, so there's nothing to worry about, I promise.

Your entire justification for using rolling submission is because you say you "probably" won't find that one amazing map until all the submissions are in. And what if you do? Let's say you find a really amazing map that blows you away and you make it the winner. What about the next map? What if that next submission you decide to not even bother looking at is just as good, or better? I understand you don't want to have to look over hundreds of submissions, which is exactly why you have a deadline. But if you're going to do this whole "rolling submission" thing, you might as well not even have a contest because it defeats the whole purpose of it.

If we see a map that blows us away, yes, we'll put it on our short list, but that doesn't mean it will instantly become the winner. We're not looking to screw you guys, and we'll be looking our for potentials that could rival the maps on our short list so it is in fact the best map that wins, not the first, which makes perfect sense.

In other words, as I've said, don't worry about it; make your map, and submit. Chances are, a winner won't be chosen until the deadline, but maps will be tested as they come in and notes will be taken about each one.

Does $29.99 count as under $30?

Also can you make a survival map in vmf with everything needed to make it work because I tried everything to make it work, even with the tutorials.

No, sorry, but as I said on our forums, if you ask us specific questions about the tutorial, we will help you. Otherwise it would be unfair.

No I mean as my map wont work and I need a map just with all the entities in it to show me what is what.

Sorry mate, it's against the rules and would give you an unfair advantage. Everything you need to know is in that tutorial. Again, if you have any questions about something specific you think you might have done wrong, post it on our forums and we'll help you.

Hey dude can I make a custom texture that advertises my mod? I will just say the name and whos making it.

Reply Good karma Bad karma+1 vote
jamespizzurro Author
jamespizzurro - - 1,678 comments

That's fine, just make sure you are the one who creates this custom texture. However, if it is chosen as the winning map or as one of the runner-ups and you decide to let us include it in the mod, you may be asked to remove it. We'll see, though - for now, it is fine.

Maybe you should make that under $30 a under $40 then you might get more contestants.:D

We're not that generous. =P ... in any case, $30 will get you most any Source-based game.

Correct, but no "$30" game is exactly $30 on Steam. Most of them are $29.99 or something like that, which means they are viable options for first-place winners. =)

This announcement has been posted elsewhere besides ModDB (our website, Interlopers.net, etc), so I wouldn't be surprised to get a massive flood of emails come the deadline.

I would enter the contest, but I am on vacation right now.

When is the deadline? I could probably conjure a map in about 2 days when I get home on June 27th.

June 30, 2009 - Noon US EST (GMT -5)

It will most likely be moved further back though into mid-July in the coming days, just so people have more time with summer approaching.

UPDATE:

The deadline has been moved to July 12, 2009 - Noon US EST (GMT -5). This will likely be the last deadline change for this contest. Apparently, there are some minor issues with the Source SDK that need to be taken care of, and I'm sure everyone participating would appreciate some more time to work.

Thanks for your cooperation, everyone.

Minor?

Hahaha...Being unable to select models is a MINOR issue?

Well, there are other ways to get models into your maps, so yes, it is a minor issue. Granted, I hope Valve fixes it soon. I don't want to have to move the deadline even further back.

Theres an old way goto hammer> tools> General> uncheck "Use VGUI model browser" this is an model viewer and to me its really bad to use but you still use it to spawn props
