In Half-Life 2: Silent Escape, scientists has organized the project of "Silent Escape" in which they must using the teleport bring people to safe place. However, things did not go quite according to plan. In the project "Silent Escape" was attended by the main character, Sean and his partner Thomas. Because of the Combine chase, they had to merge and stay in the basement, but soldiers found them. From this moment, they need to break into the lab. But they are waiting for an event about which they have not even thought of. In this modification you will find a lot spectacular scenes, a variety locations, attention to the details, and an intriguing story. The main story of "Silent Escape" unfolds before the incident in Nova Prospekt. The main character, Sean will visit many locations: the dark forest, an abandoned mine, evening forest and survive through many adventures. And have a revenge...
A very nice mod, level design was very solid but the mod lacks flow and some of the sections are rather short. Like the train level could have used a lot more work (I was kind of excited for this level).
There were some minor glitches in the mod but nothing bad really.
Good times! Give this mod a try people. ;)
Other than some broken English and a few really minor bugs Silent Escape was a pleasure to play. Levels were well designed for the most part. Although there wasn't much custom assets the levels were well decorated and full of detail. The scripted events were also creative.
There were a few disappointments with the mod. The enemy placement was very predictable. You are almost guaranteed that if you open a door there's going to be a Combine directly behind it. Other than a few scripted events the Combine were rarely on the offensive and mostly just standing in place waiting for you to show up and murder them. The another flaw with Silent Escape was the abrupt ending. Instead of some kind of huge battle it was just a linear shooting gallery.
It looks amazing. Boy you guys can map!
Other elements let it down unfortunately.
The firefights were all face to face, very few long range fights. Door opens, 3 combine run at you. Turn corner, combine right in your face.
Found that rather frustrating as Combine AI will always have them run right up to you if they can.
They work much better at a distance when there is no route to the player with lots of cover.
Also, using names like "Kevin" and "James", don't really inspire adventure. I can't recall any names being given to me of the resistance members in the official half life games so this kinda made me feel like i was playing a mod rather than an official expansion (which is what we're all dying to play).
Finally I wasn't really impressed with the puzzles. Battery puzzle took 2 seconds to solve and we've seen it before, the powerbox on the wall that opened the secret door was just plain dumb luck that I tried that. It's tantamount to running round the walls spamming the E key.
Still, the sheer amount of work on this and the mapping put it way about many of the offerings out there.
I enjoyed blasting through this little map pack, though I wouldn't say there was anything particularly groundbreaking about it. The story was fairly minimal and pretty predictable, but there was some good voice acting present.
Overall, it seems to mimic the events of HL2's story, only severely watered down with less memorable characters.
The mapping is also something of a let down. While the external sections are pretty nice and the dark forest in particular was very nicely done, the interior sections throughout lacked any real flare with regards to architecture and lighting. The section on the moving train comes to mind. The interior of the tunnel was pretty flat and lifeless but was still brightly lit. It seems to me the the train cars would have had their own lighting, rather than have something powering the lighting for an indefinitely long tunnel.
Nice little mod. It was fun.
Mapping: 9/10. It was atmospheric and logical, not to mention good looking. Great work.
Gameplay: 7/10. Same HL2 formula with some pretty okay cinematic sequences. Some scenarios spiced up the gameplay but they didn't last long. The Combine fights were the worse, predictable and uninspired. Zombie sections were a blast though, atmospheric and spooky.
Story: 5/10. It wasn't really interesting. All characters were bland and lacked depth, not to mention the dialogue was clunky and out of place, with some wannabe-fun lines that aren't really fun. Ending was cliche and, sorry to say, the whole thing tries SO HARD to be cool (the betrayal scene was trying so hard, really, not to mention there's no explanation on the guy's motivations to betray the team. Like I said, flat characters).
Overall: 7/10. It's got a short and enjoyable length (40 minutes or so). The pace is fine and the progression is logical. There's a lot to be worked upon, but it's a fairly fun experience. Good work.
