Deus Ex is one of the best PC games in history, but even it isn't without its faults and shortcomings. Shifter addresses these and then some. Unused game content, buggy scripted events, several completely useless items, and certain design choices that can only be described as "annoying", all fixed (or at least "improved") by this little mod. I started Shifter in 2002 to fix just one of the latter -- the fact that weapons equipped with a laser sight won't turn it on automatically -- and the project has expanded exponentially since then. A few new weapons, some additional uses for existing items, new augmentations, and several fixes for existing Deus Ex bugs all exist in Shifter, along with a new multiplayer component. The mod is so popular it's been featured in Game Informer's July 2007 edition of Mod World; how many Deus Ex mods can say that? (only 3, to be specific) Shifter: "Removing the suck from Deus Ex" since 2002.

A few bugs, albeit minor, managed to slip into v1.8, so I've corrected them.

Posted by on

No matter how much Beta testing is done it seems like something invariably slips through into every "final" release, and v1.8 was no exception. The bugs were slight - a few ammo count display issues, a few hand-to-hand weapons that refused to "cycle", and an aug becoming useless in unrealistic to name a few - but together were enough to warrant releasing an updated version. I've also added in one additional feature: the ability to carry multiple PS20s and/or LAWs. It was long overdue if you ask me, and surprisingly simple to implement once I found the little bit of code that was preventing it from working properly. (A holdover from Unreal Tournament)

Due to modDB's approval process the file won't be available for immediate download here. It is already uploaded to my Savefile Project Folder though, so until the file shows up here you can just go there to get it.

HellO!

First, thanks for your dedicated work to your mod and thus to Deus Ex.

Second, I see there are no comments here to congratulate you about version 1.8.1. I know that the community interest is scattered among different places (Gamespot, here, Off Topic Productions and so forth) but then I thought it was nice to leave some support for you here as well! ^_^

I do hope you can continue with your work and progress further in the AI field so that Shifter will give a new challenge and surprise old players with a different tactical approach to the encounters.

So again, good luck with it!

And thanks!

Dang, man.

I know Salk has already said it, but THANK YOU. I literally can't play any DX incarnations (DX1, Zodiac, RedSun, etc.) without shifter anymore.

You've spoiled us! At least, those who stayed around long enough to get past the unassuming name. Bravo!

Your mod got me very interested. But when I used Advanced Instalation, there weren't Alternate fire mod in KEyboard/mouse options. When I tried Simple instalation, it was OK. Is there way how to get it work? Or is problem just in my computer.

If you don't overwrite the default Deusex.int there will be a number of text errors. Like the description for the arm augs will remain the same, even though they do different things, same goes for the alt-fire key. Without overwriting the ".int" your alt-fire command will be labeled as "drop/throw item" in the key board settings.

is it possible to install a light version of shifter, that only includes exploit and glitch fixes?? this 1.81 update contains alot of these fixes, that alot of people would want in in their vanilla Deus Ex gameplay.

I think the check for the "Castle Clinton Slaughter" is bugged.

I went through to the secret back door. Entered and then made sure everyone INSIDE were unconscious. I then went to the Ambroisa and got the Mission Complete. Headed back through the secret back door and headed toward Castle Clinton. Anna ran up to me and gave me the "You were to soft on the NSF" speech.

I then headed to where the UNATCO troops are standing by Castle Clinton entrance, and they then suddenly ran in and killed all the remaining NSF guys on the outside. *I* did not kill any of the NSF. I just stood there and watched.

After finishing Hell's Kitchen, I am back at HQ, and I am getting the Castle Clinton Massacre. :/

Also, in this check, what NPC's specifically does it check? JUST the ones in/outside of Castle Clinton? Do the ones outside the Subway count as well?

That's all I have found so far. LOVE your Mod! Keep up the awesome work!

iirc That's cause of the way the AI handles unconscious bodies. Not sure if Shifter can fix that but I think it's hardcoded that way.TNM has the same problem
