Deus Ex is one of the best PC games in history, but even it isn't without its faults and shortcomings. Shifter addresses these and then some. Unused game content, buggy scripted events, several completely useless items, and certain design choices that can only be described as "annoying", all fixed (or at least "improved") by this little mod. I started Shifter in 2002 to fix just one of the latter -- the fact that weapons equipped with a laser sight won't turn it on automatically -- and the project has expanded exponentially since then. A few new weapons, some additional uses for existing items, new augmentations, and several fixes for existing Deus Ex bugs all exist in Shifter, along with a new multiplayer component. The mod is so popular it's been featured in Game Informer's July 2007 edition of Mod World; how many Deus Ex mods can say that? (only 3, to be specific) Shifter: "Removing the suck from Deus Ex" since 2002.

Yeah yeah, long overdue, and it isn't even the final version of v1.8 yet. There's a lot of new stuff in this one still though, so give it a try.

I know: it's been a while since Shifter has had an official release. In fact, if I'm not careful it will have been more than a year. Let me assure you that I'm going to release something official before that time. In the meantime, however, I have another Beta for you to play around with. This version adds a number of new and interesting features, including:

A better version of the Precision Rifle and Railgun scopes.

New AI routines which will let them pick up weapons off of bodies in mid-combat.

The ability to take down Laser Emitters using the Electrostatic Discharge augmentation.

"Second-chance" options for giving certain NPCs (Mr. Renton, Gunther Hermann) weapons if you opted not to when asked in conversation.

Vastly improved compatibility with Zodiac, including Cycling/Quick Switch support for C4.

Cycling/Quick Switch support for consumables (Zyme, Soda, Wine, etc.)

Immediate application of HDTP textures/models after loading a saved game.

More decidedly broken (as in overpowered) features for the new Unrealistic game mode.


This is all, of course, in addition to the usual collection of random bugfixes and other things too numerous and trivial to mention.

Also The "switching after last grenade" thing seems screwed up, it ends up switching after EVERY grenade. So it's like 10 EMP grenades, throw one, switches to the 10 gas grenades, throw one, switches to 10 LAMs. (Doesn't happen if you use them as prox mines though.
