Deus Ex is one of the best PC games in history, but even it isn't without its faults and shortcomings. Shifter addresses these and then some. Unused game content, buggy scripted events, several completely useless items, and certain design choices that can only be described as "annoying", all fixed (or at least "improved") by this little mod. I started Shifter in 2002 to fix just one of the latter -- the fact that weapons equipped with a laser sight won't turn it on automatically -- and the project has expanded exponentially since then. A few new weapons, some additional uses for existing items, new augmentations, and several fixes for existing Deus Ex bugs all exist in Shifter, along with a new multiplayer component. The mod is so popular it's been featured in Game Informer's July 2007 edition of Mod World; how many Deus Ex mods can say that? (only 3, to be specific) Shifter: "Removing the suck from Deus Ex" since 2002.

Yes folks, it's here, finally. After countless hours of wasting company time (I'm kidding, I swear. Please don't fire me) I am proud to tell you all that Shifter v1.7 is ready for general public consumption. In addition to the delicious cross-mod compatibility with HDTP, I've also thrown in a number of other features, which in no particular order of importance include:

  • Skillpoints for disabling bots with EMP. It has been long, long overdue, but you will now, finally, get points for disabling a bot with EMP, rather than being forced to hack it to pieces in order to get the perk.
  • The ability to give weapons to certain NPCs. Ever get irritated that you can't give Miguel any of the dozens of weapons you run across in the MJ12 HQ? Be frustrated no more. Feel free to spoil Miguel with any of the various and sundry guns you come across. After all, he deserves to be spoiled.
  • Use your office as a storage locker. Ever find it oddly jarring that anything you leave in your office at UNATCO HQ seems to disappear between missions? I have too, and I said to myself, "level design limitations be damned, I want realism!" Any items you leave within the confines of your office will reappear there after you come back from a mission/etc. Weapon stats are stored as well, so if you leave behind a modded Pistol you can pick it up again later and still have the mods on it.

All these changes and more, on top of the existing goodies found in the v1.7 WIP build. (Including the hidden conversation included in the WIP build, which has been moved and modified to eliminated the "letterbox" errors it sometimes caused)

As I write this the v1.7 ZIP file is still pending review by the modDB folks. You should be able to download it from here in a matter of days (or less), or from the Shifter website; just click the "Get Shifter" link to download it.

Oh, and most importantly: enjoy.
