If it was remade too heavily it would give the impression that it acted differently in-game (which it doesn't) - it was basically a case of fix it up and move on to more pressing needs.

Because the Battlemaster is a key and unique element of Chinese gameplay that the team has decided to leave unchanged to keep this feeling like an expansion mod to Zero Hour and not a conversion.

I know a good reason why the Battlemaster would stay in, if it ain't broke why fix it. Change some of the words to make it a bit more relevant.

I think it's a good thing they kept the barrel square because then it dosen't make the system requirements go up so some people who can't buy brand-new-top-of-the-line-models since their Dad got laid off so there is no more income to the family, like me, can still enjoy the mod.

It has no use now either. Why bother wasting time that could be used on the ECA or GLA to highly detail an object with no function at all in-game, and which appears on a unit likely to be deployed in hordes and thus with a need to keep the poly count as economical as possible?

The Battlemaster is still a Battlemaster; it'll be spammed all over the battlefield. Keeping it low-poly keeps your computer's performance up. This visual update was also only meant to be a minor thing that brings most of the old factions' vehicles up to the times; if we made any more changes, it wouldn't be a battlemaster anymore.

Also, you're assuming that it will look the same during the entire game...

Because the SAGE engine used by Generals is notoriously poorly-optimised and even great computers are undone by the inefficient code. Try spamming infantry in Contra and see what I mean.

Humvee and Scorpion are spam-units too, why are they higher-poly?

CommanderJRB Jul 7 2009, 2:11am replied:

Then you obviously haven't tested it very well, because my 2.8GHz Pentium 4 with 1GB of RAM and a 512MB ATI Radeon X1950 Pro slows to a crawl. It doesn't on regular Zero Hour, which points the blame fairly and squarely at Contra's high-poly infantry models.
The Humvee is not a spam unit and if you'd played the USA properly you'd know that. The vanilla Scorpion is an extremely simple unit in terms of polygons and you haven't seen an updated one yet, so I have no idea what you're aiming at here.

you spammed the wrong thing, try building spamming infantry in contra, not battlemasters. Build 50 or 100 of them and see what that does.

2CommanderJRB:
Why do you think that humvee is not a spam unit? Explane, please. Becaus it is the only ground attack unit for Wuperweapon General and Airforce General in original ZH.

CommanderJRB Jul 9 2009, 2:41am replied:

Because Humvees are not effective when spammed against anything other than infantry, and even then there are better options? The Humvee is known for its 'lameveeing', or loading it up with Missile Defenders and Pathfinders and kiting enemy tanks. If you're sending them in waves at enemy defence structures then frankly you're doing it wrong.

Well, it's four-sided in the screens too, so it's probably here to stay. Seriously though, it's a spam unit, and it doesn't look bad in-game. (nor will you be staring at spam units anyhow)

A higher-poly model for the ovie makes sense, for the BM, not so much.

The Type 96 doesn't exist in the Generals universe, or if it does it didn't work very well. Generals isn't and never has been about real units, so the Battlemaster is the classic tank which Rise of the Reds, as an expansion mod and not a conversion, continues to use.

Realism is not a valid point when talking about ZH, in ZH there's a Particle Cannon and weird Microwave weapons that magically doesn't harm your own troops, in RotR the US has a hover-tank and the Chinese have a giant blimp that takes 5 huge AA missiles to down.

The BM is not meant to be a powerful tank, it's meant to be a cheap tank that's easily spammable.

China's newer MBTs, especially the new Type 99A2 is very much comparable to Western MBTs. In fact, the Type 99A2 is the only MBT that I know of that has an active laser system that blinds enemy optics and ,for those unlucky enough, literally blinds enemy Tank Commanders that are looking through their scopes.

Description

The Battlemaster tank has served the People’s Republic of China for over 30 years now and its presence in the battlefield is almost symbolic. This newest variant the aging tank in use by the People's Liberation Army already comes with reactive armour built-in and now benefits from improved nuclear upgrades.
