CommanderJRB Jul 6 2009, 8:36pm replied:

It's a fictional future variant, probably enhanced from the AH-1Z. It is for the Air Force General Griffon because Rise of the Reds is not realistic as a primary goal and therefore will use units where they are most fun. There is no Marine Corps general in Rise of the Reds, so we have to make allowances.

Edit: This was in response to Volen Metalic's comments, but they appear to have been deleted. Anyway, here's how the Cobra stacks up against the Abrams in terms of overused-ness.
Abrams:
-Destructive Forces
-CWC
-MEC
-Call to Arms
-Real War Mod
-Reborn
-Generals Pack Mod
-The End of Days
-Tiberian Dawn Redux
-Crazy Mod
-A Global Crisis
-Modern Wars
-Art of War
And many more long since dead and buried. The Apache has just as many. While I take your point about the Cobra, it is far from *more* overused than those two units, and given that it is Rise of the Reds' aim to make the unit unique within the mod (i.e. it plays differently to how it would if you see it elsewhere) I seriously can't see what your problem is here.

The over useded-ness chart of the Abrams just gave me a sudden burst of realization. The Crusader and Paladin (mostly the Crusader) look like slightly modified Abrams!

The Cobra looks very nice, and exclusive to my favorite branch! Even better!

CommanderJRB Jul 11 2009, 2:51am replied:

Yes, there were quite a few design tips taken from the Abrams when enhancing the look of the Paladin, partially because it was fairly close to begin with (no doubt intentionally on EA's part). However, you will note that it is still very definitely a different unit!
As for the Crusader, I'm afraid I can't see the resemblance one single bit. Are you sure you've seen the new Crusader II that replaces the Generals original in Rise of the Reds?

that1guy! Jul 11 2009, 6:45pm replied:

I wasn't too clear about that, I meant in the non-modified version the turret of the Crusader would just be squished a bit and the vents on the back would be moved on top of the body. I also usually see it's unit picture when I think about how it looks.

IRL the AH-1Z Viper is still in testing right now to become the next incremental upgrade to the design for the Marine Corps - it's a hardy and versatile chopper that's going nowhere any time soon. Besides, the mod has the Nighthawk and Chinook to mention but two of dozens of Generals anachronisms, so it's pretty inoffensive really.

I almost feel like copying and pasting my above post, but I'm in a reasonably good mood this evening.
My point is twofold. Firstly, the Cobra is not too old for the mod - it might have been designed in Vietnam but it is still being used today *in real life*. The latest variant, the AH-1Z Viper, is so new it's still in testing. Secondly, even if it were too old, the game uses lots of old units like the Chinook and B-52 (which also hail from Vietnam or before), so the Cobra is far from an ill-fitting stand-out example.

It's different to the Apache in that it is *in* the game to begin with. There is no Apache, and nor will there be. If you mean how is it different to the Comanche, this is much faster and more agile, with less health, a more powerful gun, no anti-tank guided missiles, air-to-air missiles and rocket pods.

Think of this as more a fictional future variant where they decided two rotors were better than four than the old chopper that's remained the same for fifty years if it helps.

It's available. Maybe you should've read the instructions; 1.2 is a patch to version 1.0. You need to have Zero Hour patch 1.04 installed first, then install 1.0, then 1.2. If you want the Russian music, all you have to do is download the music pack, unzip the file and place it into the Zero Hour folder.

1.2 however, doesn't include a lot of the recently revealed units, most of them come in version 1.5, which will be out shortly. (don't ask when, cause we have strict rules not to divulge that kind of information).

Edit - ninja'd by NergiZed. Oh well, that'll teach me to get distracted.
The 1.2 release was a patch for the original 1.0 SWR Edition full release (note that rather confusingly there are two 1.0 releases, one by a previous team, so always look for the SWR edition), so you'll need both. Make sure you install it precisely as dictated in the install guide:
Wiki.falloustudios.net
It definitely does work and has for many thousand others so far, so as long as you follow the above steps you should be fine. Good luck, and have fun!

Description

The Cobra is the most agile helicopter in service. Excellent for scouting, ambushing and harassment, these birds of prey are capable of being a serious threat in high enough numbers. Though they already have a powerful minigun by default they can also be upgraded with rocket pods, making them even more deadly. The Cobra is exclusive to General Griffon, replacing his Little Bird.
