Very nice use of the billboard option in 3ds, really makes the atmosphere stand out.

Thank you. It's a combination of things, really. If you look at the default planet models in 3ds, you'll see that the atmosphere plane is quite a bit off-center. When billboarded, it therefore rotates on an off-center axis and in my opinion, makes it look more like a "bloom" effect than an atmosphere that encircles the entire planet.

So, I centered the plane to the planet mesh, then adjusted the actual planet shader to better emphasize the anistrophic glow that represents atmospheric diffusion.

Those are sentient plants bro. They just like the cold but made lights and stuff so they could see in the dark.

The lights are meant to represent settlements, really. Any light produced from bio-luminescence would likely not be visible from space.

its also interesting how the twi'lek leadership is set up..

a group of elders are chosen and live wonderful lives. but when one dies the rest are all cast out to the sun side to die.

Description

Ryloth is a planet steeped in crime, drugs, and slavery. Since it's discovery by the Old Republic in ancient times, Twi'lek society and economy has thrived on slave trade and addictive spice mining which each attracted a host of other crimes and criminals that visited the world. Not being technically advanced upon their discovery, the Twi'lek people have lived in these conditions for generations, expanding across the stars by selling either themselves or the coveted ryll spice.

As a result of these terrible conditions that spanned thousands of years, the Twi'lek people chose not to join the New Republic after the Battle of Endor and in fact, there was a movement within Twi'lek society that spread anti-human sentiment and called for war against humans. This movement was put to rest in 24 ABY but Ryloth, for now, remains independent. It's last significant contribution to galactic events was the use of ryll spice to aid in curing the Krytos virus during the brief but horrible Bacta War.

The planet itself is an rarity in that it is tidally locked to its star, meaning that one side always faces the sun while the other remains in constant shadow. As a result, the sun-facing side can reach scorching hot temperatures that are fatal to any life remaining on the surface. Conversely, the "night side" remains bitter cold but does host a bizarre assortment of plant life nevertheless. Most Twi'leks live in the narrow band of lush tropical land that spans the distance between the light and dark sides of the world.

Control of Ryloth will grant slight health bonuses to infantry.
