The Empire has fallen and a New Republic is born out of the conflict. But in the ashes of civil war, yet another life stirs...
Storm Commandos are pretty much finished with working flame thrower. Non-flamer squad members still need to be armed with some type of blaster (rather than a holdout pistol) but everything else is done.
pfffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff, getting blown away by the graphical quality. (well except that ground texture, that looks like a 4 year old finger-painted it)
Great work.
Fantastic work, as always! But please, change this awful ground texture, it's just unworthy of these wonderful models...
changing the ground texture could add a lot of lag to the game, the game already has a hard time running some of the very detailed models that people have made.
So you have to make a choice, great models, or great ground, most people dont car about the ground texture.
That's because most people make models that are way too detailed for an RTS game (usually because they port models from other games and then don't optimize them, or because they are still learning to 3D model and don't know how to optimize to begin with). RotM will try to find a balance that can improve both.
Glad to hear that :)
Beautiful. Hope that GC map also will be of that quality :)
That's some GREAT work here, I'll miss those pistols though... I mean I know that Commandos have to have blasters not pistols as their firearms, but we just don't see too much of them (the pistols). Mayby you could make Imp. Ground Commanders have them (I think officers should have pistols not rifles after all...)
And one question, are you going to somehow "change" the role of ground commanders and fleet commanders, bacause as they are, they are a liitle weak, and don't give you much...
Agree on the commanders needing an overhaul.
Back in topic, great work!!!
Yea, mostly they should get rifle squads to protect them and act as another/better infantry unit.
not to worry! The Scout Trooper Marksman comes with two Scout Troopers as spotters and they are both armed with holdout pistols. Field and fleet commanders can't be too powerful because their abilities stack and there's no build limit. They prob need an actual ability though, rather than just passive combat buffs.
My suggestion is to give field commanders a bigger escort of elite troops, and put fleet commanders in an ISD I, or II, but make them cost an amount that makes them absurdly impractical for the primary ship of an entire fleet.
I like how fleet commanders work now where they garrison the largest ship in a fleet. I think giving buffs to said ship and the rest of the fleet would be cool. field commanders could work similarly though and garisson the largest vehicle available...ie: giving a faction tank commanders, effectively.
Looking great.
I think you once said they would get a stealth ability, is that correct?
Just so I can sneak up on enemy squads and burn their faces. :)
galactic stealth but not a "cloaking" ability. their active combat ability will be EMP grenades. the wookiepedia article mentions that they are armed with them.
if you want to mod them yourself to add a stealth ability its not hard, i changed my imperial snipers to be able to cloak so its kinda like they are camouflaged. if your not happy with something just switch it, thats the beauty of the game
True that :) I learned modding by modding z3r0x's mod to my liking. I encourage tinkering.
Fair enough. Thinking about it, such an ability could easily make them op anyways.
On a side note, is it possible to give the flamers extra damage against bunkers?
Oh and is the Escort Frigate going to be a separate unit or the Commando's space transport?
flamers doing DMG to bunkers is a good idea.
the escort frigate will act kind if like the arc hammer in FoC, where its respective soldiers are buildable on the planet its in orbit over. ie: Storm Commandos only show up in the build queue on planets an escort frigate is in orbit over.
actually if you want i could send you the file that my snipers use to match them have camo, i just remember that i used the snipers from RotM in the first place with Farseers help :)
Nice of you to offer that, but I'll have to wait until the new release anyway plus I do not want to screw with balance (as I said after re-thinking it i guess stealth would likely make that unit op).
And i think i just figured out how to add such an ability myself. I'm slowly getting this xml coding stuff. XD
yea xml was tricky at first when i started learning it, but just playing around with it, trial and error, and just comparing different mods gives a good view on what to do, and when your stuck just ask for help. Thats what i always do, the mod community is very friendly... most of the time
Now if you could work on the textures, it'll be like a whole new engine.
what I'd like to do is not only improve the textures but how they interact with weather. it'd be cool if dirt turned to mud when it rained...or gradually built up snow if it started snowing. I have no idea how is go about doing that though...
Mayby make like a particle but it doesnt disapear immediatly (like when rain falls on water you see the drops touch the water)?
a constant particle like that would probably eat up a lot of memory... :/
If you want to make it more immersive, what about giving not only the infantry but all units environment-dependant skins if thats possible? For vehicles you would only need to alter the textures a little bit, e.g. slightly snowy vehicles on snow planets, dirt and greenish plant stuff on treads and walker feet on forest planets and so on. The same could be applied to buildings and in really dirty environments like swamps even to infantry to some extend.
That would propably be some work, but it would look pretty awesome.
Yes, good call :) I have been planning on doing this as part of version 5. Glad to hear that somebody thinks it will be worth the work invested in it!
Somebody thinks so indeed.
Now this would be cool indeed, as it changes textures, perhaps you could also make some alterations to the models themselves? Slight changes, some camo on tanks when in a swamp for example would make it a lot more immersive imo. If that is possible ofc. Sadly this game has so many limitations...
Changes in the model would be the primary difference, actually. For example, snow would not just be a texture addition on buildings...I would model on little icicles and snow piles, etc. Little sand dunes around the base of desert buildings...you get the idea. If you're gonna take the time to do it, might as well do it right!
That said...I personally hate camo taxtures on Star Wars units. Imperial stuff is grey, Rebel stuff is...cobled together, Mandalorian stuff is all different (so maybe some camo here but Mandalorians aren't the "let's be stealthy and hide out" types).
Thank you everybody!
DEAR GOD LORD MY EYES ARE BURNING AT THE SHEAR AWESOMENESS. Oh crap they are on fire now....
Love it, love everything about it.
Bring out you bag of marshmellows and left have a sing around the campfire tonight. :D
Yeah, a big Storm Commando sing along! Just the kind of team building activity that will lead the Empire to victory!
love the new holdout pistol run animation i feel like nobody commended that but is worthy of attention! :D
haha thank you :)
Satisfactory.
My word. That's high praise from a Vulcan.
The old world will burn.
