When I look at this, I think back to the Devastator wrecking those nebulon Bs in Rogue One. I can't help but feel like this ship suffers from the same structural weakness. That middle section looks extremely weak, it's not even covered with any armor, just exposed superstructure. That middle section should be a hardpoint that instantly destroys the ship when destroyed. Now that'd be flavorful.

On the technical side, good job on making it look like a reconstruction of several modules of the Dreadnought.

That would indeed be interesting, if not a balance issue. The ship does supposedly have strong shielding, in order to compensate but I agree that the design elements of ships inspired by the Neb-B do tend to look problematic and impractical...But cool.

Hey! What a coincidence: Moddb.com

It looks like the middle section now looks like an actual inside of a ship and not hairy molds.

Let's be honest, the original design looks awful. The image's name perfectly describes it: *** Frigate. :p

Oh Lol yeah, that artist's depiction is...not my favorite. Glad it's been improved by other artists over the years.

Very nice. I like that you used the same thrusters as one the Dreadnought.

To be fair, that idea was borrowed from Evil Jedi's model of the same ship... However, I didn't use his model for this. Obviously the Dreadnought parts are his originals (optimized for RotM) but the Mk1 variant bits are all custom :)

I wonder how you always manage to make things look even better than one could imagine. I am looking forward to see the capital ships, specially star destroyers, I am sure it is going to be incredible. I guess that due the similarities, the Assault frigate mk2 and the nebulon-B are next?

And have you decided about the looks of mon calamari ships? I have noticed there have been some changes in rogue one to mon calamari ships, it looks like the hull metal texture is different. Look at the MC75 Cruiser:

Isn't it very different from how this one looks?

Well, there's another way to think about this and I personally have always felt that Star Wars generlizes too much. What I mean is, there's a desert planet, a forest planet, a snow planet, etc. Nevermind that our own planet has ALL of those things...on one planet.

Then there are the species-specific generalizations like with the Mon Calamari. An entire species that has been around for millennia and inhabits multiple planets can only have one design of starship, made from only one type of metal? It seems very unlikely to me. There would certainly be common themes since a species would need to design for compatibility with their physiology and also cultural considerations. However, there would still be variation like with the Recusant-class destroyer, for example or the B-wing. Both ships were designed by Mon Calamari but were build offworld and as such, appear different and were built with different materials. The MC75 we see in Rogue One could very well be in the same boat, being designed by Mon Calamari engineers but built offworld.

This ship and specifically the picture in the upper left reminds me of the Andorian battle cruiser from star trek enterprise (which was one of the coolest ships for that series in my opinion)

No kidding! I didn't get into Enterprise all that much but now that you draw the comparison, it's easy to see.

Description

The Assault Frigates used by the Rebellion and the New Republic which followed were powerful starships that posed a serious threat to anything of a similar class. They weren't Star Destroyers by any means, but they needed little support to defend against most threats smaller than the aforementioned Imperial flagships.

Specifically, the Mk1 variant of the Assault Frigate was actually not an entirely new ship on its own but rather, was an extensive modification of the Republic-era Dreadnoughts that were still in use by the Empire and later the Imperial Remnant.

Engineers stripped the original Dreadnought ships of a significant amount of armor and components, leaving the core of much of the starship exposed but allowing for a skeleton crew to operate the vessels. Addition power supplies were added that offered greater offensive capability and the engine arrangement was modified in order to accommodate the new powerplant. Additionally, several of the smaller laser cannons were removed in favor of two addition medium lasser canons, mounted near the rear of the ship.
