That's what I'm wondering.... though in the end I don't care if they're Japanese, Western, American... whatever... a mech is a mech and mechs are AWESOME!

And what's wrong with military grade hardware having some style? Especially if its something as cool as a big *** mech!

It has to do with the style of the game. Both supreme commanders used a military semi-realistic western style design. It was for people like me the cool part about it. Turning it into a anime show was simply not in the style of the game, and it didn't feel the same. Giving ponies to a command and conquer game might keep it a rts, but it wont be a C&C game anymore.

dude seriously, I understand the western style of mechs (Mechwarrior, Battletech etc) and the Japanese styled mechas (gundam etc)...
but the models we made are nowhere near the second...(besides the ACUs and the Aeon angel, which are made to look like exoskeletons)
the mechs we are making might have reference to animals, and to other concepts, but in general we havent made a mech that is like the japanese mechas...

you mean super high tech? like gundam or perhaps armored core? yeah i can understand not liking the super high tech part but please stop calling it "anime"...that brings out the ppl who like to complain about it.

having spikes and stuff like that is just high tech stuff. ppl who think of japanese anime need to stop stereotyping the japanese because hey they just high tech.

anubis, if you had the choice to pick a mech from say, mechwarrior, or a mecha from gundam? well the japanese version can fly, and can be controlled without actually touching it. the japanese choose the gundam. western stuff to them is like riding a horse compared to a plane. so please instead of calling it anime, call it super high tech or something like that cuz ppl get ****** when you stereotype the japanese.

you are wrong we don't call that stuff anime because it has good tech its not the same
look at sup com 1 cyberen have spikes an no its not anime here they look like they come out of a japan comic book and no i don't like it that you can bring a sword to a gunfight

I am reffering to the design for god's sake, not some fantasy function ingame. The reason why western style games are not so - as you call them - high tech is because western style is a bit more realistic while keeping it decently high tech. Japanese stuff is so unreal it seems extremly childish and alot of times almost retarded. You see mechs that can fly fire fucktons of weapons and look like they are top models with 90-60-90 measures and epicly small heads. Seriously ... stop comparing imaginary tech with the visual aspect of things, which is the only thing i am referring to.

Also leosake - i respect your work alot, being an active member of the modding community myself. But if you look at 99% of your models even the animal ones, they simply look like they came from gundam or just about any anime show. Spikes are cool, but when a model is made of more spikes than anything else ... thats another story. Also the way the head looks ( really small and full of spikes, antenas etc ), the body design with epic shoulders, pointy chest, small middle and epic hips section, long spiky legs etc etc etc - all that resembles anime style to the letter. OFC before people become raging fanboys this is MY PERSONAL OPINION, so no cheap talking and **** like that.

Your personal opinion on Gundams/Mechas are misguided.
Go check out Armored Core, Steel Battalion, or if AC's over-stylized looks are too much for you, Front Mission.
Maybe even Hawken for western mechas.
Most of these have succeeded in looking pretty high tech without a single hint of spikes.

And just for the record, alot of eastern styled mechs never actually had tonnes of spikes.

The only thing that comes close to what you describe as "high tech" and Japanese would be Zoids, which was made for kids.

To be fair though, Sup Com was never realistic at all, and this design is nowhere near realistic either, or anything mecha to begin with...but I don't see why they should abandon their creative freedom to be more down to earth anyway.

I dunno how misguided my opinion is, when behind me stand a lot of people who share my dislike for anime. All the modders i talk to and have seen this mod said the same thing - it went from semi-western to extremly anime. The fact that i voice this opinion is another thing, but as i said, pretty much everyone i know hates anime and have the same view on this. On the other hand if you look at all the really strong fanboys ( neutral people don't count on this as they don't give a crap about it ) they are all anime lovers. This pretty much backs my personal opinions. And if you look at my description of anime style in my upper post and then check most of the cybran, acu and alot of the other mechs you will see that they are exactly like in that description. And that style of design is specific to anime. You won't see it in any true western style, because as said before it is as fantasy as it gets. As for the games you mention, dude pls. Those games were made for the eastern market, and most of their success was in japan and other asian countries. Hell their first release was in Japan and later on western markets. So they count about as much as a broken condom. And they may not have that many spikes, but boy do their mechs fit that description of anime stile.

I was admiring your opinion before you outrage..after that you lost my attention....
but to furthermore analyze your sayings, NO, our designs DO NOT LOOK LIKE ANIME...and please DO NOT search for reality in a fantasy games, you sound like a guy after watching "Underworld 2" in cinemas saying: "what the **** man ? how can a guy pull a chopper with his hands ?" well yeah....you are watching a movie with werewolves and vampires fighting, and all you;re worried about is the vampire pulling a chopper with his hands....NO MAN....JUST NO...its a game...and a FANTASY ONE ! DEAL WITH IT.....

and now, lets come back to the PURE design aspect... I admit that most of our designs would not be practicall in a real war, and to base that of, ALL MECHAS ARE IMPRACTICAL IN REAL WAR SITUATIONS....ALL ! they are too huge and attract too much attention from the enemy.... but there you go....A GAME !!!!!

and one last thing...we are keeping the design flavors mixed:
Cybran: Evil looking, Spikes, Exoskeletons, Animals
UEF: Your so talked "western" styled machines....blocky..humane...
Aeon: well....alien :P

do you know that we have fantasy and Si-fi?
sup com = Si-fi means it has to be supported by at least some form of realism.
making sup com a fantasy game is bad you can also put flying penguins with lazes in the game and you can explain with with "its fantasy".
and yes you are right about the styles of the mechs but these anime mechs don't look like that.

I'm sure there are people that stand behind you with your views, and there are people that stand behind mine, but let's not bring that into this.
Yes, there is a distinct feel between western and eastern styled mechas. I say your opinion is misguided because you synonymize Japanese mecha/anime with spikes, and over bearing amounts of weapons, which is absolutely misguided.
The only thing that isn't misguided is the fact that anime/japanese mechs tend have a "90-60-90" measurement, and there's really absolutely nothing wrong with that, but that doesn't mean that all their works will be "90-60-90".
Neither does that mean that western mechs shouldn't be able to have that.

Lets not pretend that having fucktonnes of weapon systems is unique to japanese mechs. You only need look at the nearest western game that involves mechs to see this. SupCom's Monkeylord, Megalith, and even the Loyalist Mk1.
Supcom 2's King Kriptor is the best example I can think of, off the top of my head, that fits this.

Battletech and Mechwarrior, just about a whole lot of them have this too. You have mechs like the Atlas, which has 4 lasers, an autocannon, and an LRM, and has a variety of different loadouts.

Even then, alot of anime/japanese mecha I see, including the over-rated Gundams, don't even go overboard with weapons. The original Gundam(RX-78) had...what, 2 gattling guns for auxiliary by default and a saber for extreme close range with no loadout.

If you ask me, I don't discriminate between the two styles and appreciate both for their traits and tendencies. It's all fantasy/fiction so really, there's not much in the way of doing whatever the artist/creator wants to see. I also like the distinction between the two because it's variation, and has differences that can be appreciated.

Also.. Hawken is definitely marketed for the asian market, made by eastern devs, has already succeeded in Japan, and then made there way to the western market...right.
Meanwhile, Mechwarrior online!

You guys are killing me with the spikes. Of my entire comments only the spikes got the attention. The mech style you adopted is from anime - and that is the huge shoulders, really small ( sometimes spiky head ), the pointy chest, the really really tiny middle section, the epic huge belt/hips, the small arms and the really long ( and sometimes spiky ) legs. Add to this in SOME cases wigs or huge spikes This you will ONLY find in anime style designs and only in those. Weather you accept this or not, the 2 design styles ( west-east ) can pretty much back this up. My point about the design was not just about spikes and fucktons of weapons but most of all this anime style design. This being said, it's not my mode, and all i can do is comment MY personal opinion. Your mod, your choice your design. The amount of work behind it is still epic, and it deserves all the respect in the world, and i am not commenting against that if this is what was understood.

So how exactly are the support commanders being built? Is it going to be from a quantum gate like we have it now, or are they going to be constructed some other way? Loving the new model by the way, always liked the idea of drones. Would be awesome if someone got them to work like the Kshatriya from Gundam but that's asking for a bit too much; keep up the good work!
