The treats we have for you today were brought up by a couple of the Beta Testers. While attempting to create an unofficial group test, SmashingDude created the following video that debuts the features of 3D Voice Audio. We not only liked the "factors" the video showed, we thoroughly enjoyed Maj. Bate's acting. The factors affecting the sound that you should notice are distance, direction, and impeding surfaces.
Please note that the only editing we did to his original was the intro and ending. Viewer discretion is advised due to some vulgar language and a very loud, static mic.

Semmel- also a beta tester- has apparently become jealous with the influx of Beta media and posted an update to rnl_falaise. Though the map is currently private to beta testers, we have been given permission to pick out some of our favorite screenshots to show the public. Hope these pictures catch your attention like they did ours.
You may be asking why we are showing off this custom content. Well, that is really quite simple. We wanted to show the public a few things that dealt with the move to Beta. One being that the new version looks great and has stunning scenery. The second is to share with you the passion that members of the community have for this mod. Also, having such great information come from the beta testers gave the Public Relations Team(Hunnicutt and Eric) a break.
See you all in two weeks for the December 15th Road to the Future.
Source and it's horrible micchat :(
LMFAO @ the video
haha xD
haha best vid ever! ^^
Hahahahahaha! That dude is mad!! Can't wait to ruin everybodys realism experience by charging and screaming like a madman :P
Good ol' Bates. Used to be in the same unit as him.
Sounds like a rusty plane from ww1 that crashed in the sea :P
horrible mic/voice, otherwise cool!
The 3D Audio thing is very impressive, shame that you used such a horrible example though.
Innnnnnnncredible!
Major Bates FTW!
I didn't grap what was happening when the guy came running down the hill. That mic's quality is so bad it should be used to create sound effects.
However, once he got down the hill and I understood what's going on I had the best laugh of this week. Thanks!
BTW, there is something like that for Unreal Engine 3. It's pretty impressive and could be interesting in some of the more stealthy game modes.
Cool.
EAR RAPEEEEE
LMFAO AT VIDEO.
I thought the first time that guy ran down the hill he was playing the sound of a fighter plane while he was running....then he got closer and I soon realized he was actually yelling out.....either his microphone is dodgy as all hell, or the microphone audio in this mod is screwed up lol.
In any case, I love the 3d audio, that's how it should be done, it will encourage people to stay in groups in order to communicate.
However, i'm a little concerned about if someone wants to shout something over a long distance....they should be able to get a "shout" button which extends their voice distance or something.
Also a whisper button to
good job! and the fourth screen was my favorite! nice job!
That video was brilliant, yet id love to hear clear voices in order see how effective the feature is.
Full Metal Jacket quotes lol
3D audio is amazing! :O
Oh god that was hilarious AND awesome.
LoL for the video.
Great work, cant wait to final release.
Great idea, but I fear your creation will be used for evil. Actually, may be an easier way to find mic spammers, hehe..
Shame the audio was so blown out over the mic, it might have been a good example of the 3D effect and why with the the language? A common misconception is people spoke like that 70 years ago, when you could be thrown in jail for it less than 30 years ago. Also, ModDB is going to have to put ratings on the videos like most sites have now asking if the viewer is 18+ with a D.O.B. I am sure you guys don't want 13 year olds listening to that crap? Or litigation due to lewd and flippant users.
As much as I hate pointing this out. Look at todays music. A lot of parents will allow their children to listen to music where its almost nothing but cussing and racial slurs. So if any one of them ever complained about it in a video or anything els is total bs. ( Not saying I would want my kids to listen to it, just thought I would point that out.. )
Actually he is shouting quotes from a Vietnam movie called Full Metal Jacket. Now, I'm not trying to be rude but it IS a war game. There is simulated combat violence with blood.
its not horrible its realistic
u can only hear ppl around u not ppl across the map thats realistic
That was funny as hell.. Although I half expected a odd Monty Python-ish skit due to the start. ( Due to the guy running by with that noise like he did :P )
As far as the mic being static like. Sounds a bit odd to blame it on source, as I have seen lots of people have non static infested mics... just think who ever was doing that needs a better mic is all. ( That or there is some volume issue and/or the person using it has it closer to his face than he should have it. )
Argh did not get my edit off in time due to making another comment first.
I wanted to edit my post above saying that I liked the proximity mic setup that is shown here. I also think it should be in more games/mods than it is currently.
Would make for some interesting situations. ( and perhaps a few funny ones too )
More than likely his mic is static because it's a joke and he's goofing around.
You all kind of missed that :|
There should be comm officers with radios that, whenever they talk, it's transmitted through each other comm officer so that communications can keep together while keeping it realistic. Just an idea. But this IS really impressive, I've been waiting for a mod team to make something like this and I really wish there was something like this in Day of Defeat or something.
The terrible quality of his mic has nothing to do with the feature or mod or engine itself. Bates was using his old microphone at the time, I believe.
Allah Akbar! lol
Awesome effect!
I think UT2004 even had a facility for this sort of voice location but was dropped by most mods because of CPU power it took up.
Here's hoping R&L found a way to do this without too great a sacrifice! Also hoping enemy teams get to hear *each other* if they are close enough too.
