Research and Development is a puzzle-centric mod for Half-Life 2: Episode Two featuring an unarmed player but plenty of violent mayhem.
This is one of- no, THE best mod I have ever played. I loved every single aspect of it! The form of indirect combat used was sublime, and the puzzles were challenging, yet very very fun! One of my favorite parts was getting to actually build Mr. Whirly, the game's unique junkyard-styled vehicle. Nearly every aspect of the game was perfect. The only thing lacking in any way is the replayability, but that suffers in many puzzle games.
To sum it all up, this game is the best mixture of the action and puzzle genres since Half-Life 2 itself! Even though I hate bugging game developers, I certainly do want to see another installment of this thriller in the future!
In this mod, your character doesn't know how to use a gun, but that's what makes it interesting.
Ok, this is the best mod I have EVER played, and I have played a heck of a lot of mods. It's puzzles are perfectly intertwined with the story. The puzzle segments are fresh, and refrain from becoming monotonous with each one. Every time I was in danger, and quickly figured out some kind of improvised means of fighting or escaping that danger, I felt proud, and somewhat impressed; both at the fact that I actually just DID that awesome thing, and the fact that the author knew exactly how and when to implement that specific situation for the players to utilize, even if it was not immediately obvious.
Honestly, I enjoyed this much more than Portal. It's more entertaining to solve puzzles related to your survival and escape, than solving slow, awkward puzzles just to further progress the story. That's probably why I enjoyed the latter part of Portal and Portal 2, and not the beginning or middle.
Overall, amazing level design, awesome puzzles, loads of action, epic custom content, and a lot of surprises make for my MOTY.
Amazing! I really enjoyed the crap outta this mod and I'm sad it is so short. MAKE MORE,dammit, more more more! I had the background-not-found issue at first startup, cut and pasted the readme patch and everything went smoothly from there. Don't let the lack of guns fool you, some of these puzzles are chock full of action and mayhem. Actually, most are. Great fun, I laughed out loud, yadayada, just play it.
