RCOM or 'Realistic' 'Combat' 'Overhaul' 'Mod' is a mod for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Call of Pripyat that aims to bring in a greater emphasis on realism. After years of no development, I have returned to release a new version of RCOM as an addom to "Call of Chernobyl"

MacBradley, I'm really having a hard time trying to accept these artifact guns. Is all seems rather sci-fi from my point of view. Especially in relation to the 'realistic' in the title of your mod.

This is intended as constructive criticism rather than negative criticism and I respect your dedication the modding community.

Actually, artifact guns already exist in the vanilla game.

You know the Gauss Rifle? That was something the scientist cooked up using artifact to propel the rounds.

No worries, I understand its constructive, and see where you could draw your conclusions from. I also completely respect your opinion, and consider all feedback I recieve on RCOM. I also completely disagree with you though.

IMO, STALKER is not a realistic game to begin with. Artifacts boosting a human's health/bullet resistance/stamina/carry weight/ect have no more "realism" to them than artifacts being able to change the properties through a weapon.

Should I remove controllers, poltergeists, and pseudo dogs, as well, all because "realistic" is in the title of the mod? Its not just those I'd need to remove, but artifacts themselves, or hell, the WHOLE entire story and premise from the stalker games.

If I remove artifact guns for the sake realism, then logically I must also remove artifacts as well, because they are just as unrealistic. And the zone itself...

The idea of RCOM is to make the combat much more realistic, not to change the game's level of suspension of belief.

And think about it... If artifacts WERE realistic, why wouldn't this work? All the ammunition might need to have cores filled with artifact, and thus much heavier and more expensive.

This does lead me to a conclusion still however @MacBradley: Why didn't you give specific AMMO the artifact abilities? Or is that a technical impossibility?

That would make more sense considering how the mechanisms of fire arms work. I do like this idea, but it just feels like something that would be very rare.

Aswell as the fact that artifact guns dont really do well against mutants, which gets rid of say, a sniper rifle or shotguns ability to do complete damage against mutants.
Anyway, loving the look of the mod, and hope it comes out sometime soon.
But if you could possibly make artifact guns more effective against mutants, that would be good.
And thanks for spending your time on this wonderful mod mate :)

I don't think there should be any "artefact guns" as such, but artefact ammunition seems much more consistent with the setting. Artefact rounds should be extremely rare and expensive to use/produce. They would excel at dealing with big mutants and exo-skeletons, their advantage over RPGs and whatnot being increased portability.

I agree with those of you saying artifact rounds probably makes more sense. It depends on scripting possiblity, time it takes for what its worth, how it fits into econmony, ect.

It is definitely possible, if not likely, for artifact guns to be replaced with artifact ammo before release.

Okay so is it the ammo that is artifact modified or the whole gun? Because if it is the weapon itself i would suggest a whole new model for the gun ( that is my opinion ) Instead of just a color change for an Ak ( or what have you ) Something more technical like the Gauss rifle.. How its almost alien like but still man made.

I don't mind the artifact guns existing; I just don't use them. Still, the first time I looked for realism mods I completely ignored this mod, just because artifact guns sounded silly. To me, they don't fit with the rest of the mod. Hell, here's a beautifully crafted diagram of my perception

Silliness->
RCOM/Redux ............Vanilla Stalker.............Artifact guns/SMRTR

Still, its a damn good mod and so I just ignore artifact guns.

See, I just don't get how artifact guns would scare someone away from trying the mod, when the game already contains WAY WAY WAY more far fetched things already.

Artifact guns are present in CS as well, fyi. There's a modifications that has a gravi artifact piece installed in the gun to increase bullet velocity. That is where I got the idea in the first place for artifact guns.

Artifact guns are STRAIT FROM STALKER LORE as is, so like I said; If I remove them for the sake of realism, then I have to remove every other unrealistic/sci-fi aspect of STALKER, all of which make STALKER the unique hybrid of gritty realism and suspension of belief.

The gauss rifle is an artifact gun, you know. Notice the huge ******* blue trail the bullet leaves behind. That would be from the flash artifact inside the gun.

I forgot about that .Clash, that's a VERY good point, haha.

I kept thinking of either a "coil gun" or "rail gun," both of which are already a bit far fetched to be believable for any hand held firearms to be created from such technology.

do you remember from Shadow of Chernobyl how there were a few suits that became infused with artifact properties? like the Skinner Anomaly.

No I don't remember the suits. It just another example that adds to the reason why artifact gun's aren't outside the game's suspension of disbelief.

Actually I could see needing a specially modified weapon to fire artifact ammunition. Maybe a version of the standard with a changed casing or something to prevent carrying of the ammunition affecting the user. Or possibly a different firing mechanism depending on how you think artifact ammo would work.

Someone also suggested artifact guns have separate artifact ammo, that is rare.

Personally I don't mind the Artifact Guns. They bring more variety to the game. If you don't like em, don't use em. It's just a shame they replace unique customized normal weapons like the Lynx and such.

But man I can't wait till final release.

Description

In case you haven't had a chance to try the RCOM artifact guns out yet, here's a screenshot of the Artifact Enhanced AK-74 in action. Here you can see the effect of the artifact mixed with the blood spewing from the victim's head.

I edited the v.1.0.6 artifact gun effect scripting to also work when killing mutants as well, so expect that for the next release. :)
