This is a slightly experimental mod with an unusual story. It is not set inside the Half Life universe and there are some game mechanics which have been subtley altered. The pace starts out slow, and builds up gradually.

This mod is intended to be more of an adventure rather than a shooter. If you approach this mod as a pure shooter, then you will probably not enjoy it.

There are some intense action scenes, but most of these come later on, much of the earlier parts of the mod are focused on adventure and storytelling.

There are numerous cutscenes. I know how some people don't like cutscenes, so the majority of them collect together loosely to make the "introduction". There are a couple of short ones scattered around later, but they never really jerk you away from where you are standing. At any rate - once you have a weapon, the amount of scenes drops off dramatically and the game leaves you in control much more.

We have tried to make the game as playable as possible no matter what the player does - if you want to run and gun your way through this mod (which is possible after you get your first weapon) then you can - however I think that the best experience of this mod can be gained by approaching it patiently and using your brain a bit more. The choice is yours.

Be warned - how you behave will have an effect on the game. For an example, the first (ranged) weapon that you recieve will depend on your approach to the area before it.

There are often numerous ways to achieve your goals and these may or may not be obvious.

Certain NPC's may ask you to do things for them. It's entirely up to you to decide if these NPC's are in any way relevant to your mission, if they can help you or not, and indeed if you want to let them stay alive.

This mod has been in development for a long time - but much of that time was spent planning, thinking, and preparing the wealth of custom sounds and materials etc. which are present.

Also, there have been a lot of versions of Random Quest. Many times it has reached quite a big size and been scrapped, only to be revived and re-arranged again later. Everything has been re-done so many times. You should see the size of our parts bin.

This is intended as the first episode of Random Quest. Another will come eventually.

The sequel to this will probably get started when we get Citizen II finished. (Yep, we're still doing that)

Before reporting any bugs, please check the text file in the main mod folder entitled known bugs.txt

If you get stuck, first try the tips.txt file in the same location.

We hope that you enjoy playing Random Quest!

This mod has been in development for some time but it has been almost entirely un-advertised until today, the day of the first full release. The aim of the mod is to be different and interesting. There is some tough action to be had here, but the mod is mostly adventure-oriented and starts out at a pretty slow pace. If you want to play an all-out shooter, maybe Random Quest isn't for you. But if you've got some patience and are looking for a quality distraction .... then hit that download button, matey!

I shouldn't have to play the same six minute section of the game over and over in order to preserve 20 more HP than my original run. It was less an intuitive attempt to make me preserve life and ammo, and more of a frying pan to the face. I kept instinctively checking around corners and in alleys hoping to find a medkit or a couple more rounds for my shotgun, but found nothing.

I didn't mind it so much until I got to the non-sequitor arena fight. I had 10HP and it took all of my starting ammo to take down the first antlion. By the time I was about to snag the single rocket from the dispenser, I had another one smacking my head off. I wish there was different pathways through the fight, like with the other quests. Redoing the same fight for thirty minutes is hardly rewarding for a player.

Aside from the utter lack of health or ammo, I really liked everything else about the game.

Eating "something" along the path would've restored your health :)
It wasn't entirely intuitive, but the option was there if you experimented enough and took a good look at what the environment offered..

I very much enjoyed this mod. The voice overs were nice and the character was very refreshing. I cannot wait for another part/episode.

Brilliant mod with high replay value (loved the ethical choices you offered and how they all had their consequences)! Hope you develop a sequel soon! 10/10 :)

At first I thought this was fun, despite the bad graphics. But really... I beat this thing in about half an hour and after the first ten minutes that made me want more, it became boring. I see there was some kind of effort, so I gave it 4 out of 10. Especially the sounddesign has to be much better.

OK I'm sorry I didn't say more useful things :D
I was just upset because I expected much more of the game.
Here's what I think about it.
-The graphics aren't really pretty. The level design for example has to be much more detailed and there were too many models I knew from HL2, especially the Vortigaunt was bad.
-I liked how the story began and how you could play in the beginning. But it kinda lacks the atmosphere a good game needs. I think this is because the introduction is too short and there's too few plotpoints. The problem is not that the player doesn't understand the story but that there isn't really a story because there aren't any characters except for that guy at the beginning who says one sentence and that other guy who gets shot shortly after you save him.

-The sound design isn't pretty either. There aren't many atmosphere sounds and when there are, they don't sound too good.
-I liked the voice acting. There were a few problems with the sound quality, but overall I think it was good.

Ok youre downright idiotic, Jonko. Graphics arent pretty? What do you expect, cryengine? It was made in late 2004! So dont go around, critisizing graphics! You think the atmosphere lacks life? Dude, its one of the most beutiful mods for HL2. If you want an ugly mod, go play Stay Alive, the ugliest mod in existance. The idea with the story, I believe, is to create a kind of 'lost' atmosphere, where you don't know much about what is happening. I loved that, by the way :) The sound could have used some work, and thats the one thing I agree with, yet it wasnt bad, either. Few mods have good sound effects, and this one is better than most. I feel that you are critisizing one of the most creative, beutiful, and astonishing HL2 mods ever made. I may understand that this is a reaction to how beutiful your mod is, zeitgiest (which looks amazing, by the way) but this mod still deserves credit.

The atmospheric sounds we used are 99% from HL2, so if they aren't pretty it's Valve's fault. Same thing about the models. This mod was made by two mappers, and the gems and cans of oil are about the only custom models included. The rest is just skin modifications. Considering that, it's bound to look like HL2, right?
As for the story, it'll be developed more in the next chapters (after we've finished our main mod, The Citizen Part 2) but from what I've seen from other mods, the few plot points and small story in this one still put it among the mods that have the most story elements in the history of HL2 mods. That means no-one is really shining in that aspect.
I agree with you about the voice acting sound quality. If all our samples had been recorded with the same equipment, the differences in quality wouldn't have been noticeable. But our voice actors live in different places and it's very hard to tweak all sounds to a perfect standard. We'll work more on that :)

You're right, HL2's atmospheric sounds weren't perfect and sometimes it sounded kinda lifeless. But nevertheless I think you should have used more HL2 sounds.
