Welcome to Project Reality: Battlefield 2 (aka PR:BF2), a free to download game modification for the Battlefield 2 (aka BF2) retail Windows PC game. The focus of this mod is to rework the original game engine developed by Digital Illusions of Sweden (Dice) within legal and feasible constraints to create a more realistic combat environment for the gaming community. This includes adjusting various game play elements including physics, visual effects and overall game play formats. Along with changes to how the game handles, the Project Reality team has been introducing British, Insurgent, IDF forces, Canadian, and Russian factions, plus a number of community assisted factions are currently in the works to introduce even more factions to the virtual battlefields. This Mod is not for the masses, due to the fact that it has a much higher learning curve then your classic arcade game. This is the real deal.

Three years ago the mod was very nice. But current team of idiots on developers places spoiled it completely. The theme "Realism" is not about this game. The mod is fool of stupid restrictions and rules.

The game looks amazing, but the lag is unbearable.

This mod, gameplay wise, is absolutely terrible. I'm only giving it a 3 because the modelling of the guns and vehicles is the best I've seen in any BF mod so far.

There are so many problems with this mod I don't know where to start. First, the suppression doesn't even work. It just applies an effect on screen that annoys you. It doesn't effect your ability to shoot back like in BF3 (increases spread). I noticed this mod tries to go out of its way to annoy the **** out of you. The bleeding effect is completely over exaggerated and is worse than MW2! You can't see anything AT ALL when you get shot. not fun. Also, there is no realism, the gameplay is just really slow paced. Guns have incredibly stupid deviation. Shots fly miles out of your scope like you have an airsoft gun, cars and tanks feel bland and boring to drive and have terrible physics, same with helis, and jets.

Optimization is horrible across the board. It takes 5 minutes to load a single map. wtf? Lack of jeeps and transports in general make deployment matches so boring. half the game involves waiting for your favorite kit to become available, waiting for your vehicle to spawn, or waiting to be picked up by a friendly air transport or jeep. It's just flat out boring. Also, the AI in co-op is bs. they can hipfire you across the map...

Did I mention this game involves a lot of WAITING and not PLAYING? Load times, map design and gameplay elements all contribute to this, I named a few above. There are also some sound effects and models from vanilla BF2, this completely takes you out of the experience and makes the mod seem unfinished. Not good.

I could name more bad things, but im nearing the character limit, so here is the good.

-some sounds are great
-amazing high poly models
-some textures look good (most are low res :/)
-vehicle combat is good
-sniping is VERY fun :)
and the kit system and interface is neat.

Overall, PR is an unfinished, unpolished, unoptimized and generally boring and dull to play.

Overrated! Not noob friendly.

Great concept, terrible manual, tutorials, and controls. Half the time people don't even know what they're doing. Half the time you don't even know what you're doing. Pretty much follow a bunch of other people to get killed. The bots are excellent at shooting and killing you so it gives no room for even newbies to learn. The game is made so complex that it totally destroys the gameplay. Half the time you're running around in huge maps and when you finally make it somewhere you want to check out you just end up getting shot or killed to run all the way on foot again to the same place or another place to only get shot and killed by super bots that can shoot you across the map.

Realism? LOL, not even close. I thought Red Orchestra was bad but this is worse than RO. Do you think a bunch of soldiers are really going to run around in a giant desert on foot? At least RO made sense, you got shot in the leg you slowed down to a walking pace. You got shot in the arm you couldn't hold up your gun to sight and shoot properly. I'd rather go play RO or Arma II then come back to play this mod.

The engine is showing plenty of signs of aging. The old Refraction engine is still terrible at optimizing graphics. Takes forever to load any map, QX9300 @ 3.4 Ghz + ATI 5870 + 4GB DDR2 Ram, and you'd expect older games to load quickly. Nope, old engine is craptastic even with faster hardware.

I'll wait for BF2 Free2Play and BF3.

Save yourself some bandwidth and hard drive space. My advice, wait for Project Reality's next release done in a totally different engine. Maybe it'll be polished up by then. But this mod is definitely overrated.
