Welcome to Project Reality: Battlefield 2 (aka PR:BF2), a free to download game modification for the Battlefield 2 (aka BF2) retail Windows PC game. The focus of this mod is to rework the original game engine developed by Digital Illusions of Sweden (Dice) within legal and feasible constraints to create a more realistic combat environment for the gaming community. This includes adjusting various game play elements including physics, visual effects and overall game play formats. Along with changes to how the game handles, the Project Reality team has been introducing British, Insurgent, IDF forces, Canadian, and Russian factions, plus a number of community assisted factions are currently in the works to introduce even more factions to the virtual battlefields. This Mod is not for the masses, due to the fact that it has a much higher learning curve then your classic arcade game. This is the real deal.

The Project Reality team comprises a group of dedicated individuals, several of whom have backgrounds in armed services and whose sole task is to provide researched material, including statistical information, to the developers. These are in turn tasked with coding and creating the mod itself. If you are looking for a fact based first person shooter from the perspective of a combat soldier, you need not look any further.

If you haven't been living under a rock for the last few months, you may have heard the news that GameSpy will be shutting down online services for Battlefield 2 at the end of this month.

Shortly afterwards, Electronic Arts announced via their Origin Twitter that they were working on transitioning Battlefield 2 so that it would still be playable after the shutdown. However, contrary to their original statement, they recently announced that they would not be doing this, and that Battlefield 2 online services would be shut down at the end of June.

Have no fear though! Ever since the original announcement from GameSpy, the Project Reality Team has been hard at work on developing our own solution to keep Project Reality: BF2 online, and our players playing. In partnership with the Forgotten Hope 2 team, we have quickly developed our own custom master server, and I am happy to confirm that Project Reality: BF2 (and Forgotten Hope 2) will continue to be playable online after the GameSpy shutdown.

The update that will provide this new functionality will be released in our upcoming v1.2 patch, scheduled to be released before the shutdown occurs. Not only does it replace the GameSpy online services with our own, it also includes the Dutch Forces, several new maps, as well as loads of tweaks and improvements.

For the regular players of PR:BF2, the only difference you will notice with the new online services is that upon updating to v1.2, your existing player profiles will be deleted, and you will be required to make a new online account if you wish to play online. The account management system in the PR:BF2 Launcher, the ingame server browser, and PRSPY will continue to function as normal.

As we're nearing our 10th year since Project Reality was founded, we look forward to seeing Project Reality: BF2 continue long into the future!

The pace of gameplay is dynamic and relative, but if you were expecting it to be like your average shooter you were mistaken.

It's about organised tactics and teamplay rather then impulsive reactions, it's what sets it apart from the majority of online FPS games/mods.

It's by far the most played Battlefield mod with plenty of full servers all the time, other BF mods are barely played by comparison.

i know that it's all about tactics but reoalding a weapon like 12 sec in the mod is not realistic if u would reload weapon in this time u would die very fast on war ok ?? and how does machine gun in the vechicles has to wait like 5 sec to shoot it's non real, one more thing deploying anti tank sraw 20 sec has no sens u just take it out and shoot not deploy it that much time u would be killed by a tank !!!

oh yeah and people play this mod because theres cool weapons vechicles maps and looks better than normal bf2.

Reloading/setup times vary depending on the weapon, but none really stand out to me as being too long. If you like you can post a feedback/suggestion thread on the PR forums at about that.

The reason some of the more powerful weapons take a while to fire is to roughly simulate the time it takes IRL to position yourself and setup such a weapon for accurate firing. For example if you're driving a jeep IRL and you spot an enemy you couldn't jump on the roof mounted MG and fire it instantly, you'd have to position yourself on the gun and prepare to shoot it properly.

In the heat of battle I agree you would be doing things as fast as possible while trying not to make mistakes. For example maybe the anti-tank launcher should be quicker, but it wouldn't be as quick to fire as a rifle IRL and those firing it would likely be in a covered/concealed position so they don't get killed by an enemy tank before they shoot it (unless they're untrained/stupid/unlucky).

Fundamentally PR is not all about realism despite the name, it's also very much about teamwork and tactics. PR is also limited by the engine, so various workarounds and rules have to be made to achieve the developers goals whilst maintaining fun game play (and I know fun is subjective). It's also an evolving project with a lot more to come, so keep an eye out for further changes.

BTW. There is a lot of other polished mods with an impressive amount of content (eg. POE2, FH2), yet they're hardly played by comparison.

The BF2 engine on its edge... the BF2 gameplay reformed and finally promotes real teamwork. If you search for challenges in tactics and adrenaline boosted firefights this is the FPS game you search. For me it worths to buy BF2 (if you haven't yet) just to experience this mod. The extra content and the gameplay that is provided through Project Reality makes me to feel that PR is not a mod but a whole new game you can have for free. From Clan's experience perspective it is a must for every player…

Overrated! Not noob friendly. Great concept, terrible manual, tutorials, and controls. Half the time people don't even know what they're doing. Half the time you don't even know what you're doing. Pretty much follow a bunch of other people to get killed. The bots are excellent at shooting and killing you so it gives no room for even newbies to learn. The game is made so complex that it totally destroys the gameplay. Half the time you're running around in huge maps and when you finally make it somewhere…
