Welcome to Project Reality: Battlefield 2 (aka PR:BF2), a free to download game modification for the Battlefield 2 (aka BF2) retail Windows PC game. The focus of this mod is to rework the original game engine developed by Digital Illusions of Sweden (Dice) within legal and feasible constraints to create a more realistic combat environment for the gaming community. This includes adjusting various game play elements including physics, visual effects and overall game play formats. Along with changes to how the game handles, the Project Reality team has been introducing British, Insurgent, IDF forces, Canadian, and Russian factions, plus a number of community assisted factions are currently in the works to introduce even more factions to the virtual battlefields. This Mod is not for the masses, due to the fact that it has a much higher learning curve then your classic arcade game. This is the real deal.

The Project Reality team comprises a group of dedicated individuals, several of whom have backgrounds in armed services and whose sole task is to provide researched material, including statistical information, to the developers. These are in turn tasked with coding and creating the mod itself. If you are looking for a fact based first person shooter from the perspective of a combat soldier, you need not look any further.

If you haven't been living under a rock for the last few months, you may have heard the news that GameSpy will be shutting down online services for Battlefield 2 at the end of this month.

Shortly afterwards, Electronic Arts announced via their Origin Twitter that they were working on transitioning Battlefield 2 so that it would still be playable after the shutdown. However, contrary to their original statement, they recently announced that they would not be doing this, and that Battlefield 2 online services would be shut down at the end of June.

Have no fear though! Ever since the original announcement from GameSpy, the Project Reality Team has been hard at work on developing our own solution to keep Project Reality: BF2 online, and our players playing. In partnership with the Forgotten Hope 2 team, we have quickly developed our own custom master server, and I am happy to confirm that Project Reality: BF2 (and Forgotten Hope 2) will continue to be playable online after the GameSpy shutdown.

The update that will provide this new functionality will be released in our upcoming v1.2 patch, scheduled to be released before the shutdown occurs. Not only does it replace the GameSpy online services with our own, it also includes the Dutch Forces, several new maps, as well as loads of tweaks and improvements.

For the regular players of PR:BF2, the only difference you will notice with the new online services is that upon updating to v1.2, your existing player profiles will be deleted, and you will be required to make a new online account if you wish to play online. The account management system in the PR:BF2 Launcher, the ingame server browser, and PRSPY will continue to function as normal.

As we're nearing our 10th year since Project Reality was founded, we look forward to seeing Project Reality: BF2 continue long into the future!

What happens if you have 8.7? Is there a patch or do you have to reinstall everything?

No incremental patch unfortunately, just the full new installers.

So much has changed that an incremental patch would be quite large anyway.

0.9 should uninstall 0.87 automatically for you in the setup process.

If its already complete, why they just don't release it? I mean, why a password?

It sounds strange to me to 'gather up players' but if the devs need time, I bet they know what they're doing :P

Understandably we all want to get our hands on it ASAP, and having the installer already but not being able to extract is a bit unusual.

They could of just held back the installer until Friday, waiting to finish the Manual (+hopefully the Wiki too).

Instead they've allowed us to get the files early so most of us are ready to play as soon as the passwords out and they can kind of make more of an event out of it.

There's more than enough players either way, it's just going to build up a lot quicker this way. Some people with slow Internet have to wait a long time to finish downloading the files so they'd greatly appreciate it also.

A few reasons:
- Allows all the admins to update their servers.
- Allows the DEVs to finish off documentation and other things not in the installer.
- Increases the amount of players on 0.9 when it is released.

Back when 0.85 was released I got the installer ASAP and only a couple of servers had updated, with skirmish levels of players at that point. This time it should be much more immediate.

0.9 is being released this Friday, 5th of February. You can already download the installer but it is passworded until the release day. Download links here:

0.9 will include Steam support and integrated SP/COOP.

Do anyone else lose connection to the server they are on when they've played for a while? Every now and then I drop out of the server, and if I am using skype, I lose that connection too (Xfire, Teamspeak etc. is not affected)...

Is this a known issue, or is this me only?

The BF2 engine on its edge... the BF2 gameplay reformed and finally promotes real teamwork. If you search for challenges in tactics and adrenaline boosted firefights this is the FPS game you search. For me it worths to buy BF2 (if you haven't yet) just to experience this mod. The extra content and the gameplay that is provided through Project Reality makes me to feel that PR is not a mod but a whole new game you can have for free. From Clan's experience perspective it is a must for every player…

Overrated! Not noob friendly. Great concept, terrible manual, tutorials, and controls. Half the time people don't even know what they're doing. Half the time you don't even know what you're doing. Pretty much follow a bunch of other people to get killed. The bots are excellent at shooting and killing you so it gives no room for even newbies to learn. The game is made so complex that it totally destroys the gameplay. Half the time you're running around in huge maps and when you finally make it somewhere…
