Preliminary Focus is a mod that takes place before the events of the original Portal, but under the influence of a different AI. The player will be introduced to many new testing elements throughout the duration of the mod, and will experience a smooth learning curve from beginning to end.
Recently me and my technician, Thomas (he wants his last name anonymous), tag-teamed a project I thought of a long long long long long long long time ago for my mod ICI Laboratories, which was the Tesla Coil. For those who don’t know what a Tesla Coil is, it’s a giant metal tower that has a ton of metal rings on top of it that emanate massive quantities of electricity that stream out in random directions and is guaranteed death if you’re standing too close to it.

Recently me and my technician, Thomas (he wants his last name anonymous), tag-teamed a project I thought of a long long long long long long long time ago for my mod Indestructible Core Intelligence, which was the Tesla Coil. For those who don’t know what a Tesla Coil is, it’s a giant metal tower that has a ton of metal rings on top of it that emanate massive quantities of electricity that stream out in random directions and is guaranteed death if you’re standing too close to it. Somehow the only purpose people have found for it in real life is to use it as a musical instrument- which is an… interest… use for a death ray. Which Tesla invented too.
Back on topic, after a couple days of scratching our heads and saying “I can’t figure out how to make this! Is it even possible?” I discovered the point_tesla entity and soon realized just how insanely easy it actually is. In fact, it was so easy we ended up laughing at ourselves for how dead-simple it was (well to be more precise I laughed my head off at Tom, but I'm not sure if he laughed at all though).
So then I had my dear colleague Thomas spend the next hour (the very next day) work on the project. And it was a great success! But it was also ugly as sin, and I couldn't have that. I mean look at that thing it's a freaking barrel with electricity coming out of it? What the heck?
So I had him send the .vmf (map) file over to me and I went through the what I call:
THE EVOLUTION OF THE TESLA COIL!
First off I decided to make give it a kind of bulky, shiny for look, because that's the style we've kind of established for ICI Laboratories. It was definitely better than a barrel, but it still looked weird. My next version of the Tesla Coil was identical except it emanated an orange-yellow lighting, rather than white lighting. It looked cool, but still not good enough. So then I decided it was too thick, so I recreated it and made it thinner. Big mistake.
And then I realized that the real problem here was that I wasn't basing my model of the Tesla Coil to actually look like a Tesla Coil. Word of advice: Don't do that. So I Google searched "Tesla Coil" and saw a nice little image of a normal Tesla Coil (and I mean the Tesla Coil was actually little in the picture), and I based the model off from there. I even changed the color of the lightning to green even though that's not realistic even a little bit. So when I was done I came up with this thing!
Look at that! It's beautiful! I even tried several times to give it a hug it looked so epic (but then the electricity kept killing me). So after my excitement of the Tesla Coil died down I spent half-an-hour or so on the test chamber that the Tesla Coil was in. So that's what the background is in the picture of the finished Tesla Coil. So now you may be asking "Well what the heck does it do?" My answer: Well, it, uh... hurts you... and...
No I'm kidding, back when Tom made that horrible Barrel Coil he also made it so that if a cube touches the electricity coming from the coil then the cube would become super-charged and emanate it's own lightning. And then you can make it touch some sort of outlet and it activates something.
So that's the Tesla Coil, I would like acting as if it was hard to make and such but then it would be really embarrassing if someone decided to re-create it themselves and found it was easy to the point of stupidity (okay maybe not that easy) and made me look bad. But, well, it's just a new concept now, everyone at Blue & Bluer is waiting to see what the public thinks of it.
