Re-enter the Half Life Universe and revisit City 17 in the time before Freeman, in this fan made single-player mod. The Resistance is threatened by a decisive Combine assault, and as a wanted Resistance member you will need to fight to escape from the Combine's clutch. At the same time, a mysterious force is working towards ends unknown...
I absolutely loved this mod! I thought that there can't be any more interesting mods taking place in Half-Life universe, but this one changed my thoughts. Firstly the mapping was great. Much detailing and some excellent use of space in the maps. As a mapper I can say that it was some great mapping. The pacing was great and environments were nice and fresh. I liked the combat and puzzles too. I hope to see something more from author(s) so keep on the good job!
Definitely among the greatest Half-Life 2 mods ever made. Oddly, Precursor's smartest moments are when it subtracts from the formula: stumbling through dark tunnels without a flashlight is genuinely creepy, while picking your way through a field of hopper mines without the gravity gun is tenser than I thought HL2 could ever be.
I dislike how the final battle depends on quicksave precognition, but otherwise this mod is a string of great ideas executed well.
Pros: Gameplay is awesome. Pacing is perfect, firefights never seem to be unwinnable, and mix things up enough to remain interesting. Mod is challenging without being impossible. Hunter battle was hectic and very well-done. Music and voice-acting very good.
Cons: Maps not the most visually stunning out there. Ending was kind of abrupt.
Overall: Well worth a download. 9/10
Overall the mod was great, with a nice gameplay pace between combat and puzzles. The hunter "boss fight" was pretty interesting but could've been better executed. Some areas are clearly bland and lacking a lot of detail, such as the lighting which felt extremely simplistic. But the mod doesn't disappoint in the rest, offering a fun and diverse gameplay. Can't wait for the sequel.
A very good mod!
The level design was very well done, and even though I at times almost wished I had a flashlight of sorts, the game came in and pointed the way with cleverly placed lighting.
Voice acting was also well done, hats off to the voice actors.
The only gripe I have about it is that even though the final boss fight was very climactic I didn't really feel that the characters sense of purpose had been fulfilled at the end. When the game started I was under the impression that the final objective was to clear out and prepare the white forest installation for its future objective. While I know this was what happened in the final cutscene, I felt couldn't help feeling cheated because the game did it for me.
