Aperture: Science Innovators. 1952. In the early days, Cave Johnson's science team tried to get working what they could. Everything did not go as well as they'd hoped though. Unfortunately for Mel, she became part of a faulty test. Waking up years later in a vastly changed, destroyed Aperture, and being told where to go by an impostor Cave Johnson, her mind races with questions. Who is this Cave Johnson impostor? What happened to me? And what happened to the facility and staff?

Portal Stories: Mel is an upcoming free to play mod based in the Portal universe. It tells an entirely new story with a new protagonist, personality core, and a new secret character in development.

The Mod:

Portal Stories: Mel is a mod consisting of 21 maps with various themes, linked together by a strong custom story.  We estimate players to spend 15-45 minutes to spent on each level, making the total time playing the mod 4-12 hours, depending on experience.  Most levels consists of puzzles with varying difficulties.  The difficulty will always be in the puzzles.  The execution will never require any quick reactions.

As you can see; we have a lot done, we have a lot more work to do as well. But we're working hard on getting you this awesome mod as soon as humanly possible. As for custom materials and models, at the moment I don't have a proper list of them but we have quite a lot of them!

Hello Test Subjects!

After about 3 years of development we're finally at the last stages of development of the mod.
We're incredibly happy to announce that we are now aiming for a release in Q1 2015.
Because of recent updates to portal 2 we will also be able to bring Portal Stories to Mac and Linux!

Last year in August we created our very first limited closed beta of Portal Stories: Mel.
There was a lot of positive feedback, but there were some levels that were a problem or just not meeting the quality of other maps.

For the last 10 months we've been very busy working with the feedback we've gotten:
* The mod is now 21 levels instead of 15!
* The intro is heavily expanded upon, to make more room for story and make the whole thing way more immersive.
* The first major story level got a major rework. It's prettier than ever and helps tell the story way better.
* Past Power (the demo map) has been reworked again from the ground up to perform better, play better and tell the story better!
* The style transitions have been created.
* The clean test chambers have been edited so they are very interesting to look at.
* The map "Paint Fling" has been rebuilt from the ground up, making the puzzle more interesting and way nicer looking.
* One confusing clean map got cut and replaced by a new, awesome map, reusing some of the ideas of the original.
* The second transition between styles gotten a very visually impressive extra puzzle.
* Two destroyed puzzles that weren't working or had performance problems have been reworked from the ground up.
* Replaced a destroyed puzzle with a new, better one.
* Heavily expanded upon the concept for the finale.

All our maps are now at the standard we want our mod to be and we're incredibly proud of this.

So what's left to do?
* Get a new, up-to-date, trailer!
* Get a new, up-to-date, demo for you guys to play!
* Finalize some of the unfinished areas in the intro
* Finalize the script
* Get voices recorded
* Get our custom music recorded
* Add the final story lines to the maps
* Lots of play-testing, to make sure we got all the bugs
* Do a final Detail pass, to make sure all our maps have the visual fidelity we want them to have
* Check the optimization, to make sure the mod runs as smoothly as possible

This is quite a bit of work; but we have confidence we can get this work done in time for a Q1 2015 release!

As someone who has watched this mod since 2011 when it first started, I just want to say, this mod is looking great. DO NOT release it early to please a few. Release it when its done. Make this mod shine with the ingenuity and creativity of everyone on the team. Show the community that Half Life isn't the only game with awesome fans, that can make a mod with such quality, that it shines above all the rest.

Thanks. I myself had some problems and eventually didn't check on the mod at all for a few months. The new trailer is about 30% complete and you can expect it soon. I know everyone's working real hard to give you the best mod we can, and thanks for your kind words :D

Having followed this thread for a while now - I think the mod, which was started in 2009, a full 2 years ago . . . will never be completed.
Apparently a fair amount of mapping has been done, but is not even close to being ready. So I agree - they should wrap it up and post up the completed maps. It is unfair to everyone to force them to wait for years - time to put up or shutup - and I say that with the utmost respect for the coders. After all, they have put a lot of work into it.

Mate, you have to understand this stuff isn't quick to make. The storyline for portal 2 would have been constructed over many years by a huge professional team, holding regular playtests, who are hugely motivated by the garuntee of getting paid at the end of it. I started this mod but had to leave, because I literally didnt have the time anymore, I wish I could have just "finished the mod". I've been watching what the new team has been up to, and it's a very good quality. In order to deliver maps of a similar quality, by 2 or 3 people, doing it in their own time who need to earn a living on top of that, with no money, takes a lot of time. The team obviously don't want to release something rushed and of a low quality.

first of all, we didn't start in 2009, we started in the summer of 2011. The 2009 one is a dead portal 1 mod with the same name.

When the mod is done we will have:
* A custom story driven mod
* High quality custom voice lines
* High quality custom models.
* Brand new textures that will enhance the levels.
* High quality custom music.
* Maps that are like something you've never seen in any portal mod so far.
* A couple of hours of some really brain teasers.

We believe that that's what we want, we don't want to release 9 good maps and let them drown in all the stuff that's in the workshop. We want that high quality we can only achieve if we invest time in storytelling, recoring voice lines and all the other stuff. This mod is really more then just a bunch of good levels ;)

We sincerely hope you guys still support us and we hope we can make you really happy with the mod once it's out :)

lpfreaky - I just replayed your map "Past Power" and it is one of my all-time favs. I have checked back here many times, hoping to finally download and play Portal Stories. To no avail . . .

Might I recommend that you cut the project short and simply tie up the loose ends and release the 9 maps that are done ? It is simply too painful to wait and wait with no idea when (or "if") the final, 15-map Mod will be released. People lose hope and stop checking back. So far all we have to play is the one map (Past Power). At the very least release a couple more maps to keep the interest up. Thanks

you could, but we aren't. We are just increasing quality all the way. At the moment the mapping is at a low pace, but we're working on our custom music, ironing out the story and a lot more. We're far from dead!
