1952... World War II has ended, now it's time for science! Aperture Science!
This is where you step in test subject, we're doing a sleep experiment. You can go to sleep and we'll monitor you. The next day you can go back home, with some nice cash to spent...

... at least, that is what they told me. Apparently something went wrong though. I feel that I'm being lied to by that nice voice that is re-assuring me that nothing is wrong. Why is the portrait of the CEO showing a much older version than I remember? Why do I have this weird gun? What happened? I want to go home!

The Mod:

Portal Stories: Mel is a mod consisting of 15 maps with various themes. Linked together by a strong custom story. Full of custom voice lines, models, materials and challenging puzzles. We estimate players to spent 15-45 minutes to spent on each level, making the total time playing the mod 4-12 hours, depending on experience. Most levels consists of various puzzles with various difficulties. The difficulty will always be in the puzzles. The execution will never require any quick reactions.

The story:
we have been working hard on this mod for quite a while, ideas have changed. We feel that we have come up with a better story than we originally planned. We have some rich characters, with good voice acting to support them. Mel will be one character, Virgil will be another one and who knows who else we might find along our journey? To get some ideas about the story of the mod check out the first two paragraphs of this page, that contains all the information we want to give you for now...

The maps:
There is a total of 15 maps in the Portal Stories: Mel mod. They are all highly polished and brain teasing. Without becoming frustrating. There are various themes in the maps that will all have their own type of puzzles and looks. Transitions between the themes are story driven and might come as a surprise from time to time.

The current status of the mod:
At the moment we are working very hard with a team of four very talented people on the mod. We are currently trying to finish up the puzzle design, finalize the levels and polishing them. At the moment we have:

  • 11 maps that are done. They only need to have the story implemented. This will be done as soon as the story is done.
  • 2 maps that are done but need more detailing, that's currently work in progress. We expect this to be done in about 2-3 weeks.
  • 2 maps that are in early production, there's a plan for the maps, it does have to get build though this will probably take about 4 weeks per map.

As you can see; we have a lot done, we have a lot more work to do as well. But we're working hard on getting you this awesome mod as soon as humanly possible. As for custom materials and models, at the moment I don't have a proper list of them but we have quite a lot of them!
The Team:
The people who make this mod possible:

  • Annemieke (Lpfreaky90), lead design on the mod. Putting the right people on the right tasks. Designs and creates puzzles and levels.
  • Ian, our amazing story writer! The story of this mod is in his more than capable hands!
  • Jacob (iWork925), detailler. Give iWork a map and some time and they turn out even prettier than you could ever imagine!
  • Stephen (Lonewolf2056) map maker and puzzle designer. To check out his skills look for the  Dilapidation series on the steam workshop!

The release date:
We've had quite a few, quite ambitious ideas on release dates before. But as a matter of fact: we don't know when it'll be done. We're still working on it quite intensively, making tremendous improvements in the graphics, the puzzles and the story telling. Take a look at the earliest screenshots and the newest. It's from the same map, but the graphics are far from the same. We want to bring you the best and we hope you have the patience to get the best.

People that helped us a lot:

  • Adam, awesome music!
  • HMW, an awesome model we're not going to tell you about yet!
  • Josepezdj, for some awesome materials!
  • Vordwann, for some awesome models!

Inactive team Members:

  • Alon (MarioishBeast), puzzle concepts, image editing, video editing.
  • Andy, started the mod together with James
  • James, started the mod with Andy
  • Moth, detailer he did an awesome job!

Hey everyone!

Over the past few months we have been quite quiet on moddb.
However, we've been quite busy on Portal Stories!

A few weeks back we've finally been able to sent a selected group of experienced mappers a first beta build of the map. The feedback we've gotten was very positive and extremely helpful. We've made a big list of all the issues that have been found and we're now working on fixing them as we speak. These errors range from a model overlapping another model to some totally unintended solutions. We are working closely with the testers to get the errors out as soon as we can.

Does that mean the mod is almost ready to be released?
Unfortunately, it doesn't. The beta mod we've sent out was mostly to test out the puzzles and the maps that are related to that. We have still a lot of work to do on the story, the music and the intro and the outro. The intro and outro maps are something that we've been working on for a while but are very complex and requires various assets not found in portal 2. Getting them in requires a lot more time and effort.

Now you might be wondering if you can be sent the next build for the Portal Stories beta?
If you leave a link to your steam profile we'll contact you if we're looking for new testers!

Kind regards,

To end this post here's a little teaser:

Would you guys be interested in making the portals in Portal Stories: Mel new colors? In the original Portal we just had blue and orange, but in portal 2, we got light blue, and Red as well if you played Co-op. Would the Team be interested in making the portals in PS:Mel New colors, like Green, or Purple?

I don't see a purpose for changing the portal colors; they work fine as they are. We have a lot of other stuff that should make the mod worth playing :)

Yes, the video is very old and contains a lot of outdated material. We are hoping on releasing a trailer in the not so distant future, that features more and more recent work.

I suppose you are talking about the demo.
It's been a long time ago since we last updated it. If you want to check it out it is probably easier to check the version on the steam workshop:

I might update it later, but I highly recommend checking out the updated version on the steam workshop.

This is a very important question:
Is the character model actually Mel?

Ah, I see that you have. At least, as best you guys could.
