This is where you step in test subject, we're doing a sleep experiment. You can go to sleep and we'll monitor you. The next day you can go back home, with some nice cash to spent...

... at least, that is what they told me. Apparently something went wrong though. I feel that I'm being lied to by that nice voice that is re-assuring me that nothing is wrong. Why is the portrait of the CEO showing a much older version than I remember? Why do I have this weird gun? What happened? I want to go home!

The Mod:

Portal Stories: Mel is a mod consisting of 15 maps with various themes. Linked together by a strong custom story. Full of custom voice lines, models, materials and challenging puzzles. We estimate players to spent 15-45 minutes to spent on each level, making the total time playing the mod 4-12 hours, depending on experience. Most levels consists of various puzzles with various difficulties. The difficulty will always be in the puzzles. The execution will never require any quick reactions.

The story:
we have been working hard on this mod for quite a while, ideas have changed. We feel that we have come up with a better story than we originally planned. We have some rich characters, with good voice acting to support them. Mel will be one character, Virgil will be another one and who knows who else we might find along our journey? To get some ideas about the story of the mod check out the first two paragraphs of this page, that contains all the information we want to give you for now...

The maps:
There is a total of 15 maps in the Portal Stories: Mel mod. They are all highly polished and brain teasing. Without becoming frustrating. There are various themes in the maps that will all have their own type of puzzles and looks. Transitions between the themes are story driven and might come as a surprise from time to time.

The current status of the mod:
At the moment we are working very hard with a team of four very talented people on the mod. We are currently trying to finish up the puzzle design, finalize the levels and polishing them. At the moment we have:

  • 9 maps that are done. They only need to have the story implemented. This will be done as soon as the story is done.
  • 4 maps that are done but need more detailing, that's currently work in progress. We expect this to be done in about 2-3 weeks.
  • 1 map in expansion phase. It is almost done, but it needs a small extra area, this should be done within a week.
  • 2 maps that are in early production, there's a plan for the maps, it does have to get build though this will probably take about 4 weeks per map.

As you can see; we have a lot done, we have a lot more work to do as well. But we're working hard on getting you this awesome mod as soon as humanly possible. As for custom materials and models, at the moment I don't have a proper list of them but we have quite a lot of them!
The Team:

  • Ian, our amazing story writer! The story of this mod is in his more than capable hands!

The release date:
We've had quite a few, quite ambitious ideas on release dates before. But as a matter of fact: we don't know when it'll be done. We're still working on it quite intensively, making tremendous improvements in the graphics, the puzzles and the story telling. Take a look at the earliest screenshots and the newest. It's from the same map, but the graphics are far from the same. We want to bring you the best and we hope you have the patience to get the best.

Hey everyone!

It's been three weeks since our last update but we have been very very busy!
In the meanwhile we've designed seven brand new puzzles!

Puzzle 1:
    - Name: Funnel Gate
    - Style: Clean
    - Test Elements: Funnel + Cubes + Fizzlers
    - Difficulty 6/10
   
Puzzle 2:
    - Name : Laser Sequence
    - Style: Destroyed/Overgrown
    - Test Elements: Laser + Redirection cube + Fizzler
    - Difficulty 7/10

Puzzle 3:
    - Two of a kind
    - Style: Destroyed/Overgrown
    - Test Elements: Blue gel + cubes + funnels + Fizzlers
    - Difficulty 7/10

Puzzle 4:
    - Two of a kind (Advanced).
    - Style: Destroyed/Overgrown
    - Test Elements: Blue gel + cubes + funnels + Fizzlers
    - Difficulty 8/10
Note: this map will not be in the mod but it is available as a download here.   
   
Puzzle 5:
    - Two of a lightbridge
    - Style: Destroyed/Overgrown
    - Test Elements: Lightbridges + Fizzlers + cubes
    - Difficulty 8/10

Puzzle 6:
    - Fly out cubies
    - Style: Old Aperture
    - Test Elements: Cubes + Fizzlers + buttons
    - Difficulty 4/10
   
Puzzle 7:
    - Hyde
    - Style: Clean
    - Test Elements: Fizzlers, Cube, Laser + buttons
    - Difficuly 7/10
Note: we're still discussing this puzzle. it might not end up in the mod.
   
As if that's not enough we've also completely re-made a map we had (destroyed) to meet up with our standards.
There are some minor changes to the layout and some tweaks to the puzzle but you can still recognize the original map.
Unfortunately we lost all the nice detailing from the original map so that has to be completely re-done. But we'll get on to that as soon as possible.

Not only have we worked on creating new puzzles and re-building old ones: there's also been a lot of work going on in the detailing of the maps. The difference between before and after is incredible and once the mod is out we will show some before and after pictures because we don't want to spoil the looks of the new version yet!

We will however post some nice screenshots from the puzzle "Two of a kind":

You don't change the files of the game I don't think. You add it to the sourcemods folder and restart steam.

As someone who has watched this mod since 2011 when it first started, I just want to say, this mod is looking great. DO NOT release it early to please a few. Release it when its done. Make this mod shine with the ingenuity and creativity of everyone on the team. Show the community that Half Life isn't the only game with awesome fans, that can make a mod with such quality, that it shines above all the rest.

Thanks. I myself had some problems and eventually didn't check on the mod at all for a few months. The new trailer is about 30% complete and you can expect it soon. I know everyone's working real hard to give you the best mod we can, and thanks for your kind words :D

Mate, you have to understand this stuff isn't quick to make. The storyline for portal 2 would have been constructed over many years by a huge professional team, holding regular playtests, who are hugely motivated by the garuntee of getting paid at the end of it. I started this mod but had to leave, because I literally didnt have the time anymore, I wish I could have just "finished the mod". I've been watching what the new team has been up to, and it's a very good quality. In order to deliver maps of a similar quality, by 2 or 3 people, doing it in their own time who need to earn a living on top of that, with no money, takes a lot of time. The team obviously don't want to release something rushed and of a low quality.
