Have you ever wanted to roam around in the Half-Life style 2005 Beta of Portal, or maybe fight the Beta GLaDOS in the 2006 Beta? Well, look no further! This page will give you free access to both betas! You can download them separate, or Download them both in the Portal Beta Bundle! Once you download a beta (or both betas) Instructions on how to install the betas will be included in the .rar file. You absolutely will need Steam. Portal is required for this to work. Summary of the 2005 Portal Beta: This is the earliest version of Portal. Actually, it mainly uses assets from Half-Life 2. There is no GLaDOS, instead you just escape. You will notice some familiar test chambers in there. These are the early versions of popular test chambers that are still in the game today. Summary of the 2006 Portal Beta: The 2006 Beta is almost exactly like present-day Portal, but with a few differences. For instance, GLaDOS was added in, but she was a floating cube of rollermines from Half-Life 2.

I used to be heavy into the valve game modding scene, but life has since gone on and gotten busier, although I still very much love valve games. I wanted to clarify something: the beta content is provided in as-is condition. This is the reason there are no level transitions. I simply fixed them up to be playable on (most) systems. In the 2006 beta, a short time after escaping the fire in test chamber 19, I keep getting the "ED_Alloc: no free edicts" error when GLaDOS finishes talking about the party escort submission position.
Same. :/ I even put -num_edicts 4096 in launch options and that only bought me another 20 seconds or so.
I just found what causes the issue.
This specific map doesn't seem to be fully compatible with the current dll files in Portal's bin folder.
The original Project Beta always worked fine, but is always stuck with default FOV set at 75.
So I replaced the dll files with the ones from the retail game to have the FOV slider.
As soon as I reached that part, it crashed too with the exact same error.
Since this revived version doesn't come with it's own dll files, it uses the ones from the base game instead by default.
Weirdly enough it seems to be working for me now. Maybe the Feb 28 update Portal got fixed it?
