Portal: Prelude, as its name states it, is an unofficial prequel to the game Portal. Its story revolves around the pre-GlaDOS epoch, even before she was plugged in. At this time, test subjects were monitored by real Aperture Science employees, whose work was tedious, lengthy and repetitive. This is why they decided to build a great artificial intelligence that could both replace them in these difficult tasks, and also take responsibility for many other tasks within the complex and compete with Black Mesa's superiority. All employees of the Aperture Science complex are now eagerly awaiting GlaDOS. Maybe even a little too eagerly, as the upcoming events will tell... This game is totally free. It offers a bit more gameplay hours than the original Portal, with 8 chapters, 19 test chambers, 48 challenges, 6 advanced maps, a brand new storyline and more than 400 lines of english speech with dozens of subtitles translations.

The mod which dared to do something no other has done yet... a good attempt.

I was one of the hundreds of people who were blown away by Portal, another ingenious game from the Valve Gods of Gaming. And thus everything Portal created via the community would never live up to it as it would be a terrible attempt to be on that level of deity.

This valved man strangly looks like some kind of religious icon...

But i was browsing Moddb, for nothing in particular just browsing through its haphazard navigation system when i actually found something without actually looking for it. (Ironically the only way to find something on the website). Portal Prelude, the game that would come before Portal Prelude. At once i clicked a button and was ready for its updates, i didn't have long to wait as it came out and i spent the next 3 hours downloading it.

Then i installed it and then went camping for the weekend. However on return i managed to actually play the single player mod. I am impressed by it, it has a whole new take on the Portal Universe and has a whole load of interesting and different puzzles of which to solve. The levels were very well made, with some excellent set design even to the point that i kept getting that OS Pages Poll memory low error and a crash out of it all. It's like my computer was blown away by its high tech design and complicated puzzles.

The voice of entertainment is two people who i assume are the voices you can get windows to simulate via one its pointless programmes. Which were not really funny though I think a couple of lines sparked a bit of a smile but nothing on the same lines as GlaDOS.

Though that is as far as this mod really goes, the puzzles are somewhat impossible for me to figure out that I had to noclip around the map to figure it out properly. But the main problem here is that I am slightly lazy and that unlike portal the entire elements of the problem are not visible to the user. A lot of the problems are hidden away behind moving walls which do not seem to be very productive towards the completion of the puzzle. I think that although they may be drastically obvious to the designers or they either require the user to have an insane ability to figure out the problem within 5 seconds so as not to fall to that green water death. With all of the awesomeness of this mod including its cut scenes, animation and effects the puzzles, for which portal is based, is what will lose it a lot of its players. Portal was tough at some parts but doable when you could see everything that was required for the puzzle, even the last tests had that.

All of the original cast are present in this mod...

I also found that I spent a lot of time standing around waiting for dialogue to be completed without being able to ride a lift expecting another puzzle or just do something whilst two characters chat to each other whilst you stand in a corridor where little is happening.

The mod was not really fun, I noclipped through some puzzles just because I got fed up of trying to do them and wanted to get to some more story. The end story and the lead up to Portal is a lot of awesome stuff which is impressive with some effects that I would not have expected to see in such a mod.

With its bugs and challenges the mod hardly has the wick to hold a candle to Portal and with all of its good points it still falls short.

Poorly written (full of run-on sentences and grammar issues), and the author blamed the mod because he couldn't figure out the puzzles. If the puzzles are too difficult (so difficult in fact that you had to noclip), then get better and don't blame the devs. Not only that, but I didn't find a single bug in the mod. The author, despite not actually naming any specific bugs, stated at the end that there were several. It's not that I don't respect the author's opinion, it's just that that opinion was expressed poorly and the reasons he used to back it up were because of his own inability to figure out the puzzles.

If you play a mod that, say, in one room launches a hundred fast zombies at you, resulting in death of your character every time, would that be a problem with the mod or would you just have to get better?
Just that some people waste hours and hours trying to figure out a puzzle doesn't mean we all want to do that.

If you dont like hours of puzzle solving then why the **** did you download this mod for? Just so you cud complain? Also it is NOT the developers fault that you suck at the mod! And also why buy Portal in the first place?

The puzzles weren't hard. The precision portaling + simple puzzles = ridiculously hard.

14 years old, and therefore nobody has to give a shit what he thinks, not to mention the bad taste of critiquing a review as if its author is not entitled to his opinion.

these developers are devils, I am pretty good at portal, but the response time needed and little chance for fault is extreme.

I agree on the parts that you criticize, but I think the game was more fun than that and deserved a higher score.
The puzzles weren't that well made as in Portal and I also noclipped a few times. Many of them are great, on the other hand.
The dialog was kind of stiff and false and took too long time sometimes, too.
But if you look at the competition, this mod is worth more than a meager 4.

Portal prelude was bad.
But many games and mods out there are average at best.

hmmm rather strange "Portal" was supposed to be a puzzle game and this mod was supposed to make the puzzles harder. If u needed to noclip in the original then there is no point in downloading this mod. If you do not like puzzles then why buy Portal and why download this mod.
It was not too hard (for me at least i only noclip-d in chamber No 19 to see the cake and else) and if you die then there is always the "save" and "load" buttons. Also the original game was easy only 1-3 hours of playing (a few longer if you want to include challenges).
