Posted by Henley on Mar 2nd, 2009

This is it, the big one... the one everyone is waiting for: the result decided by you and 115,000 other gamers who voted for their favorite mods in January. As always, we expect the results to be argued - but one thing I think we can all agree on is that 2008 was a top year for mods, with 150 high-profile releases. 2009 is already on track to beat that number, but for now, it is time to showcase the very best of 2008!

Honorable Mentions

We would like to recognize the mods Insurgency (Half-Life 2), Sven Co-op (Half-Life), Empires (Half-Life 2), Forgotten Hope 2 (Battlefield 2) and Dystopia (Half-Life 2) which have placed higher in previous MOTY awards and therefore were not included.

Zombie_Master wrote:Zombie Master is a multiplayer Source modification, centred around a zombie-apocalypse, which throws all but one player in the shoes of human survivors. Pitched against a relentless tide of rotting flesh, they must scavenge for weaponry and equipment just to stay alive. But that one player, chosen randomly at the beginning of the round, is not bound by mortal restraints. To speak his name is to invite the wrath of hell - but most call him the 'Zombie Master'. He is nigh omnipotent. His invisible hand controls the legions of undead like puppets on strings; slowly closing the net on the humans while they run to and fro like rats in a maze.

3.Portal: Prelude

Portal:_Prelude wrote:Portal: Prelude, as its name states it, is an unofficial prequel to the game Portal. Its story revolves around the pre-GlaDOS epoch, even before she was plugged in. At this time, test subjects were monitored by real Aperture Science employees, whose work was tedious, lengthy and repetitive. This is why they decided to build a great artificial intelligence that could both replace them in these difficult tasks, and also take responsibility for many other tasks within the complex and compete with Black Mesa's superiority. All employees of the Aperture Science complex are now eagerly awaiting GlaDOS. Maybe even a little too eagerly, as the upcoming events will tell... This game is totally free. It offers a bit more gameplay hours than the original Portal, with 8 chapters, 19 test chambers, 48 challenges, 6 advanced maps, a brand new storyline and more than 400 lines of english speech with dozens of subtitles translations.

1.Project Reality
Battlefield 2

Project_Reality wrote:Welcome to "Project Reality", a free to download game modification for the Battlefield 2 (aka BF2) retail Windows game. The focus of this mod is to rework the original game engine developed by Digital Illusions of Sweden (Dice) within legal and feasible constraints to create a more realistic combat environment for the gaming community. This includes adjusting various game play elements including physics, visual effects and overall game play formats. Along with changes to how the game handles, the Project Reality team has been introducing British and Insurgent factions, plus a number of community assisted factions are currently in the works to introduce Canadian, Russian and IDF forces to the virtual battlefields. This Mod is not for the masses, due to the fact that it has a much higher learning curve then your classic arcade game. This is the real deal.

Mediocre results. ZP:S didn't deserve second, but hey, it happens.

At least the results were not as upsetting as Best Upcoming.

Three surprises to me are though:

Half-Life 2 wars - This mod is fun, but far from what I'd consider a MoTY...but oh well.

Stargate The Last Stand - I guess fans can bump a game that's ugly, buggy, and not very fun, and make it this far. Fans are powerful indeed.

Pirates, Vikings, and Knights II - I will never support this mod after what they did, stealing code from the AoC team who helped them, and then denying it. I still hate them for this and can't respect them. AoC dev's I've seen aren't fond of stealers either. :P

Not sure what the confusion here is, Many AoC developers are quite fond of PVKII and there has never been any friction between us at all. Our fans may be a different story at times but the teams themselves have never negatively interacted in my memory.

They never stole anything, further more i believe Age of Chivalry and PVKII to be about as far apart as is possible considering they're both medieval style melee combat games based on the same engine. They both bring a unique and different feel and take on things, which you prefer is entirely up to you!

Mkilbride Mar 3 2009 replied:

Well, I got it from an Official News statement on the AoC site itself. It was a big fiasco, I read all about it. I don't know what's going on now though, if AoC themselves are denying it, but that new posts is as clear as day in my mind.

Does anyone else see the total ******** that is going on here??

As you can see Project Reality already "won" a top 5 place in players choice for this EXACT same category last year. But yet... Dystopia (which has a MAJOR update), and other games for different categories like MWLL not eligible to be apart of the top 5 in Unreleased even though it only got 4th place last year...??

It's clear to me now that there is some serious MODDB corruption going on, or atleast the folks at ModDB not standardizing their own rules that they said (which were horribly unclear anyways). If mods like Dystopia and MWLL are disqualified from being apart of the top 10 or top 5 because they were last year (even though the rules state only WINNERS can't win again), how can a mod like PR not only do that for a second year in a row BUT WIN 1st??

It seems like ModDB can't even follow their own rules.

+3 votes     reply to comment
PiratePlunder Mar 2 2009 replied:

Oh dear - its really quite straight forward...

Unreleaseed mods - You cant be top 5 upcoming mods more than once - otherwise some mods that never release would just sit on top of the list for ever. Makes sense to me. Get on and release then win MOTY.

Released mods - If you placed HIGHER in previous years than this year, for example FH2 that placed 5th i think last year you are removed from the list. PR placed 2nd last year, so not higher than 1st this year. I don't really see the point in this, but it is straight forward and transparent.

+1 vote     reply to comment
KorJax Mar 2 2009 replied:

Well, to be frank the rules say quite clearly:

"# No mod / indie game can win in the same category twice.
Eg. a mod cannot win "best unreleased" two years in a
row, only a honorable mention will be given in this situation.
# Exceptions to the above rule maybe granted on request by
the Mod DB. Eg. if your mod moves from v1 to v2 and it is a
total overhaul, we reserve the right to make it eligible again."

Clearly, Project Reality should not have been elgiable then. Because according to the standings in other categories, "winning" = any mod that's ever been in that category in the top 5 or top 10.

However, apparently PR went through a total overhaul. In which case I can understand why it can be eligible "win" twice in a row. But what doesn't make sense... is how other mods like Dystopia that ALSO did a total overhaul are ineligible. I also don't see why there are special exceptions made for released mods that happened to have "done good" even if they already won before, and yet unreleased mods that have massive amounts of progress shown over the past year can't qualify what-so-ever.

No matter how you try to say it, the rules are rules. It's clear to me that ModDB doesn't even really follow them. Project Reality may be a good mod, and deserving of a spot on the ladder, and maybe even first place, which is allright with me. What get's on my nerves though are tons of other excellent mods that WOULD have made it on the top 10 or top 5, but they are disqualified for being apart of the awards before.

Just so you know mate, if you did read the rules and the paragraph above it does state that if a mod has had a massive update and had PLACED higher then in previous years it will be allowed to place.

"We would like to recognize the mods Insurgency (Half-Life 2), Sven Co-op (Half-Life), Empires (Half-Life 2), Forgotten Hope 2 (Battlefield 2) and Dystopia (Half-Life 2) which have placed higher in previous MOTY awards and therefore were not included."

So just a little bit more reading before accusing ModDB of any wrong doings is a good idea.

KindredPhantom Mar 3 2009 replied:

It is quite possible that because the major update Dystopia had came through in February 06, 2009 it was ignored.

This would be because only updates for mods in 2008 are counted and this update came out past the cut off date for inclusion.
