Our type of “old school” is a very different breed than the type encountered in today’s “old school”. Yes, there are similarities; We too have upped the action, speed and gore, but not to the extreme lengths seen in the new Doom game. Our levels are built for exploration, progression and environmental puzzles. These are our main qualities. Phobos is closer to games like Half-Life or Dark Forces/Jedi Knight in spirit. Just like Classic Doom, these games are types of First Person Shooters that have all but vanished. We truly are a different kind of oldschool.

On a rail :D? Speaking of which, what did you think of Black Mesa?

I for one enjoyed it very much! It shows what kind of standard you can have, even though you're "just" a mod.

We can all learn a lot from those guys

Objectively speaking, do you think your mod reaches the bar set by Black Mesa or is it even better?

One more thing: Is there any chance the mod will be released this year? From your most recent tweet, I take it E1M3 is already in phase 2?

I wouldn't say better, but we are reaching pretty high. Its just that its harder to find skilled people like animators for Doom 3. So you won't see us using as much custom content as Black Mesa. We want to though

We are getting far with this project, and it's going very well, but we'll probably not release this year.

Well, not a lot of people know about your mod. What if you advertised it on popular 3D modelling sites? There's bound to be some animators there

We already tried that in the past. Without much luck. We'll try again when its time to implement the story and whatnot, only then we really need animators and whatnot.

Hey, I've just remembered something! There is a program called iPiSoft, that offers cheap mocap Ipisoft.com . All you need is a Kinect or preferably 4 PS eye cameras because they are cheaper(4 cost 80$) and have better tracking. Here is a demonstration of what it can do: Youtube.com

Uuuuuh, Doom has always been colorful and vibrant. The art direction in Doom 3, while quite amazing, had a big flaw: the colors were not very varied, and most rooms were gray.

Besides, if you take a look at E1M1 of the original Doom, you will see a LOT of color.

don't get me wrong with this. I still play Doom 1 and 2 on ports nowadays. While I don'T really call Doom 3's design a flaw I appreciate the way Phobos handles this so far.
But when comparing this screenshot with priors it looks too cartoony and reminds me more of Borderlands

We are trying to "color" our environments a bit more than what you see in Doom 3. We are sick and tired of the gray and brown look from the games like Gears of War. But we also wanna give original doom a nod in the process.

Colors make everything much more interesting.

I do not mind using more colorful lights from time to time in Doom just as much as I like dark corners in original one. It could be interesting experience.

Yep, I love the colors. They bring back that classic Doom feeling, that feeling of action shooter instead of slow-paced corridor shooter.

If I were John Carmack I'd ask you guys to help with Doom4, just saying. You guys are fuzing Doom3 with classic Doom and it looks better than both, at least to me. AAA status work you're doing here.

Oh and even if Doom4 turns out great, I'm sure there will be PLENTY of areas of just gray and brown like Rage had, so I sure hope there will be a team like you guys, willing to add colored lighting and areas to help make the game look more tasteful :)
