PEIRAPRIGOND
Level Design, Programming and Story by LANDVAETTR

You are on vacation in the south of France, invited by an old friend who settled there a few year ago. Not far from the village stills stand the ruins of a very old castle, set on top of a massive rocky spur. Not much remains of the ancient fortress but a few collapsed walls already erroded by time. Yet you've decided to give it a closer look, after all the view from the top of that mountain would be breathtaking by itself. You are there, wandering amongst these old stones, when the rain starts pouring down. You are looking for some shelter, when suddenly...

CUSTOM STORY CARACTERISTICS:

  • Instils fear through a tense and stressful environment
  • Top notch Level Design
  • No irrelevant jumpscares.
  • Complex backgound story, embedded in a strong historical context.
  • Many notes (hope you like to read: I like to write)
  • Many puzzles to solve.
  • 3-5hours of gameplay (depending on your pace/wits/choices)
  • 10 maps from medium to huge, over 40 rooms.
  • 3 alternative endings depending on the choices you make.
  • Best played in the dark, with low gamma and headphones, alone (and obviously turn off the useless hints of the game.)
  • Only available in English version.
  • Detailled PDF walktrough inside the CS folder.

This is my first Custom Story.

I've been working on it for a whole year, on my spare time. I hope you'll enjoy.
Have a nice time shitting your pants in the dungeons of PEIRAPRIGOND!! >:)

Cheers,
Landvaettr

IMPORTANT:

Please don't forget to rate and review when you've completed the mod.

Most of the issues of the first version have been attended to. So if you have played V.1 PLEASE modify your review/rating or at least notify you played the Alpha, not the latest version. Thanks to all :)

PEIRAPRIGOND V1.3

PEIRAPRIGOND!

Hi all, years have passed and this custom story has long been forgotten... The dark dungeons of Peiraprigond are lying silent and unaltered for centuries (or at least 7 years...)

Will you dare to delve into these dark dungeons, unearth their grim secrets and solve the eerie mysteries of Peiraprigond?

Seven years have passed but I just did a few minor fixes that should actually significantly improve the solving of two mysteries of the main storyline that were initially a tad too challenging... I hope this update will please the most nostalgic of players and bring attention to this long forgotten mod to newcomers. PEIRAPRIGOND is a story driven mod, with lots of lore and ambiance. Hope you will like. Cheers!

Tip for any new players: I spent an inordinate amount of time trying to move the bed in the prison cells before seeing in a video walkthrough by Fante ( Youtube.com ) that you can use the end table to help shove the bed over. The developer walkthrough pdf will NOT tell you this!

Followup: I was also unable to figure out how to go up through the hole in the lower floor of the archives to escape (see walkthrough pdf), and multiple video walkthroughs used an alternative method of creatively parkouring around the staircase rubble, which I ended up doing as well.

I's ok, you're not supposed to recover it from within the oubliette, you'll be able to get it from inside the cistern, if you have the hammer and the chipper item.

Peiraprigond - 3/10

This is probably one of the very worst custom stories ever created. I wasn't even able to finish it purely because of how miserable it was making me feel. My friend recommended this to me, insisting that it's good and that I will like it, but after having played it for as long as I did, that ended up feeling like nothing else but a sick joke to waste my time for the day (it wasn't though, he thinks it's genuinely good for the same reasons I think it's awful).

Every room of every level completely lacks any natural light, which is okay, but the amount of tinderboxes and oil it gives you is pitifully low. It forces the player to be constantly shrouded in darkness unless they already know every single thing they should be doing and where to go. My friend said there are 12 bottles of oil and more than 50 tinderboxes, but I only managed to find 3 and 1 large oil and only like 25 tinderboxes max. It wasn't enough.

None of the doors are labelled so you can't know where any of the keys go. There are small hints in some notes, but in my personal opinion, reading notes ruins a game's pacing and are boring so I don't read them. The Mementos doesn't give you clues where keys go either, so I'm constantly running around trying the key/needle on everything until I inevitably find what it unlocks. It just wasn't fun at all.

The main hub area is also extremely laggy for me, both on Vanilla Amnesia and my Modded Amnesia. There's too many particles that drops my framerate down to a 6. It's also confusing with 3 doors that lead to the exact same place, just in different rooms.

They also hide many items behind things in really stupid places. Basic items, and key items most especially, shouldn't be hidden in ridiculous places. I found oil and rope hidden underneath beds. Why? Why would you put something there? And the custom story continues this trend of hiding things in unbelievably dumb places, especially near the very end of the story.

The only reason I didn't rate this a 1 out of 10 was because I actually think the level design is kinda good, I just hate how every single thing is hidden and I can never find anything I need. It's hard to believe there are 12 bottles of oil, let alone 50 tinderboxes - I cannot find them.

There are no words in the English language that perfectly encapsulates how much I hate this mod. I wish it didn't exist, and it's impossible for me to understand how anyone likes it. I don't feel like it did anything right to make itself enjoyable.

Hey man, Modder here. Genuinely sorry to hear you had such a bad experience with Peiraprigond. Some of your critics do make sense, while some others sound a little more like bad faith resulting from frustration. I totally get it though. Figured I'd issue a response nonetheless.

"(...)but in my personal opinion, reading notes ruins a game's pacing and are boring so I don't read them."

It stands clear to me that this sole quote pretty much sums up why you had such a bad experience, why this mod clearly wasn't meant for you.

Peiraprigond was never meant to be a fast paced, easy solving, cheap scares custom story. It was intended to be a worrysome and atmospheric explore with a dark and complex storyline that lead up to an intense catharsis. And the story delivered through the notes is actually meant to intensify the journey.
Besides, the game's about unraveling SECRETS and solving an ANCIENT MYSTERY. Yes, it just might imply reading and using your brains. You'd have found a little more than "A few clues" in these notes...

This. Is. A. Heavily. Story. Driven. Custom. Story.

Now don't get me wrong, this Mod is pretty damn far from perfect, but maybe your friend just enjoyed discovering the creepy story while exploring and getting lost in this ominous place. While you didn't and yeah, it does suck but maybe it just wasn't made for you.

Concerning the rest of the concerns:

- RESSOURCES: CONCERNING OIL & TINDERBOXES
Yes, your friend is right, there is actually a lot of oil and tinderboxes. Some are pretty well hidden but most only need but a little search to be found. Also, torches remain lit.
Then again, if you've spent a significant amount of time being lost after choosing not to read the notes, sure, I believe you must have frequently ran out before unlocking new areas..

- NONE OF THE DOORS ARE LABELED
I actually agree with you on that point. Seemed like a sensible idea at the time, since most doors aren't actually labeled in real life, even in castles. But retrospectively I kinda wished I had put a few labels from time to time, just to make it less confusing to some players. This is defenetly hardcore point-and-click, I'll grant you that.
Than again early in the game you can find a note inside the library-on a table- with a complete description of the different floors and the rooms they host.

-THE LAGGY HUB
Can't argue much with that either, I did experiment lag on spawning and long loading myself.
These maps are huge. Also, let's say I've used the amnesia assets "creatively" when mapping, resulting in cool spaces but unnecessary polygon counts. I had little complaints from players with configs running it successfully seven years ago so i didn't really get overly worried. You are right though, It is far from optimized.

CONCERNING ITEMS IN STUPID PLACES:

No. You didn't bother reading notes and learning how the owners of the items lived or died, so you don't get to complain on that.

Also, many people keep items under their beds. Having rope at hand in a subterranean space and near an oubliette isn't THAT much of a stretch. But sure, I'll gladly concede that the rope under the bed isn't 'logic' enough. But I'd be curious to hear about another item hidden in a "dumb place" that isn't mentioned and justified by the story.

As you can see I don't agree on most of your critics but than again it seems like you've really suffered wanting to complete this CS so I do understand from where you stand and wished to give you a reply.
Genuinely sorry you had such a bad experience on this mod.
I wish you a happy gaming on other mods.
Cheers.

I prefer custom stories that tell their stories thru the environment or via dialogue from characters.

Notes in - not just Amnesia, but every game - ruin pacing in my opinion, as I said before. It's unreasonably boring and unenjoyable in my opinion. There's a video out there explaining this entire idea and I agree with basically the whole thing (I would link it but I tried to find it and it won't show up).

In my personal opinion that you are completely in the right to disagree with - I firmly believe that it is bad game design to force players to read notes for anything to make sense in terms of gameplay. Story is one thing, but just finding items and figuring out what to do is something else entirely.

I should be able to figure it out without pausing my game and having to read a wall of text for 10 minutes straight.

Oh, and the laggy hub was my fault and I had since then fixed the issue.

nah broo no such thing as a mod with certain pace or premise, no such thing as a specific target and subjective opinions are just a myth. if the oracle above says your mod is bad it is OBJECTIVELY bad and you failed as a modder to satisfy the sophisticated standards of mr center of the world. like what, did you think leaving obvious hints a 30iq neanderthal could understand is enough?

oh yeah, worth mentioning your average score is now irrelevant, since, as we know, "Mod does nothing right to make itself an enjoyable experience", which means all reviews are paid actors and the mod is actually 2/10.
hopefully you can fix all the objective issues in your next mod/patch, peace

There is no such thing as a good or bad opinion, it's just my honest thoughts and as a person who hates this mod I'm going to tell people not to play something I hate.

Mod does nothing right to make itself an enjoyable experience. Do you do this with every negative review you see? Pathetic.
