Parallax Mapping Mod 1.0
Full VersionThis mod adds parallax mapping to Doom III. To put it simply, parallax mapping makes things look very 3D and costs little performance.
Parallax Mapping Mod enhances Doom3's graphics engine by applying parallax mapping to all textures. Parallax mapping, also known as virtual displacement mapping, is a recent graphical technology that gives surfaces more depth and realism. Using a heavily modified vertex and pixel shader and a mix of custom and simulated height maps, this mod makes surfaces look more three-dimensional by offsetting bumps depending on your view. Although you may not see an obvious difference right away, look closely at surfaces and you will see an improvement compared to original Doom3. Most bumps will look like they're actually sticking out. This mod also works in user-made levels that have custom textures, and a tutorial is included to describe how to add optional height maps to your level for a true parallax effect.
NOTE: This mod requires at least a Radeon 9500 or GeForce FX

Well at least I wont have to ask permission while doing a lot of my own exploitation of this tech. The CPU overhead is real. Probably draw calls, and im out of budget.

I decided to start working on the game using this simply so I dont have to come back to it one day to max it out, when CPUs catch up. You still kicking it boss? Do I have permission to shove this tech into the entire game where it makes sense? The wall im faced with is CPU not memory, but in about another 4GBs of compressed information (.pk4) even with 4GB patch, it finally takes a massive dump.
Usually modders ghost me. If I havent received a reply in like 30 or more days im just going to use it and give you credit that it was modeled on this mod. If you dont like it then I guess you can sue me because as long as you get credit why should you or anyone care amirite?

The mod can be downloaded at Gamefront.com
Doom3.gamefront.com There's one example screenie, with download linkage.
Can this be applied to other engines?
uhh... If the mod is finished and released... Where can I download it?
WOW. A million times better than bumpmapping. Just remember that if you get pixilatedness, click the link above the download list to get instructions to fix it.
i'm impressed to see such an advanced technique added to doom3 via you guys. a few screens would be nice, that show the difference between the usual bump mapping (as i understood, was used originally in doom3, right?) vs your parallax mapping.
