RSS Feed ORION: Announcement Delayed (slightly!)

The large announcement that was due today is unfortunately being postponed. Do not worry - it is for awesome reasons and it will be worth the wait. I have included a nice little image for all of you nice folk to forgive me. Click to enjoy

Posted by Praz on Jul 19th, 2010

As some (hopefully many) of you may have known - we were supposed to reveal and announce something rather epic and huge today.  However, we had to delay it (we are not happy either, don't worry) and are looking forward to peeling back the curtains and showing it to you in all of it's glory in roughly 3 weeks time.

We can't really talk details about it but I have included these nice little images since it's all I ever hear about anyways.

Enjoy and forgive!

See you all very soon!

Ah well, I'm sure it'll be worth the wait.

My prediction: You've bought out Micro$oft, all their published games will come to PC and Orion is replacing Halo. I'd stake my left testicle on it, although sadly I already staked that on HL2 EP.3 being announced next year and released 2012.

How do you know that EP3 is gonna be announced next year? Nobody is sure about it, neither Valve, that seems to have left HL to death (lol, l4d + hl ahaha stupid joke) but well, if you say so...

For praz, really nice man, I loved them!

Lets hope EP3 gets announced. It's long over due and it will be exciting to see what Valve can do with the Source Engine - as they are really only the ones that can push it anymore.

Stake your right, man.
Normally you'd have 2... or none.

I'll make an unqualified guess that we'll be seeing a T-rex, riding that sweet piece of as-... wheels.

Well as far as I know you CAN get vehicles working on the Orange Box SDK over networked games.. it's just not in a way we would be happy releasing and saying "this was our vision of vehicle combat".

It's rather sloppy on Source and something we can't slap into our product.

We'll be talking details soon!

Just as an FYI: This T-rex is actually a paintover of Primal Carnage's T-Rex. It's kinda sad that you guys resort to stealing from other indie developers in the community and claim it as your own. Doing paintovers of other people's work is fine, but when you rebrand it as your own that crosses the line.

Here's Primal Carnage's T-Rex: http://i.imgur.com/EeKgL.jpg

And the comparison: http://i.imgur.com/N0hQu.gif

Uh... How is that a paintover? Look at the jaw structure - It's completely different. That's what a T-Rex looks like. They're similar, but they're not the same.

Zubren Jul 20 2010, 6:12am replied:

Except if you look at the patterns and details in the skin coloring you'd see that the details about 80% the same. They warped the proportions so they don't line up 100% perfectly but they just painted directly over Primal Carnage's model and called it their own concept. The head is obviously different but the body is still plagiarized.

So you're saying that one T-rex is 80% different than another T-rex?

Look at all of the T-rex's across all forms of media and even actual historical bones. How much do they change?

If anything BOTH games are taking it an extra step and getting away from the Jurassic Park look.

Calm down. I'm going to share what I know so far, without jumping to conclusions. I am working on an indie podcast with ashton (Primal Carnage) and one of the developers on orion. Ashton privately shared his work in progress pics of the trex in our skype chat. A few days later, this very similar version is posted on the orion page.

Hey now, no neeed for the big hasty words. There are a lot of confused people - even the lead dev on Primal was somehow confused (and extremely rude).

However, I don't know how this all happened since we've been around for 10 years and have posted various content relating to the dinosaurs previously.

Yeah, surprisingly he came at me this morning as well. Well not directly - was talking behind my back.

However, no that is not the case. The dinosaurs are COMPLETELY different, and yes both of our games have dinosaurs. However, ours was based more on the V-rex from King Kong (Peter Jackson's flick).

Either way, not cool.

And just so all you crazy folk don't actually believe this nonsense.

Not only have we shown off our design on some boards previously, but we've had the T-rex in our game for now over 10 years.

Here is some additional proof:

Previous T-rex concept (notice teeth)
Orion-project.net

Previous T-rex concept (notice teeth - another angle)
Orion-project.net

Older version of the actual model (notice the older teeth):
Orion-project.net

Older version of the actual model (from the Source Engine):
Orion-project.net

And the mood art that was sent to the concept artist. It was more-so based on the King Kong V-rex than anything.
Orion-project.net

So.... seriously guys? Grow up.
We've only been around 10 years longer than them.

I'm not saying that ALL of your dinosaur images were stolen. I'm just saying the SINGLE image I pointed out was plagiarized. The head you guys created was unique, but the body was stolen. All of those images you posted have nothing to do with Primal Carnage and I have no problem with that, only the single image which you have now taken down to avoid bad PR.

I'm glad you have had dinosaurs in your game for 10 years, I don't have a problem with the concept of dinosaurs otherwise I would have gone and posted **** about Dino D-Day, but they didn't steal concepts from anyone, that's the ONLY difference between you and them. That and they have actually released something in 10 years.
