open Outcast should become a free unofficial successor of the Action-Adventure Outcast (by Appeal). Therefore we are creating a total conversion of Crysis Wars.

Story Teaser

Cutter has departed, and everything is far from perfect on Adelpha.Cutter Slade

On top of that, unseen, another puppetmaster pulls the strings.

Only one man can handle this: the Ulukai himself! Cutter will step into the String Tunnelling Device once again, and discover the truth behind an ancient mystery...

A short summary what happened so far:

  • OpenOutcast started as a total conversion mod for Crysis Wars (CryEngine 2)
  • Crytek released the CryEngine Free SDK, allowing smaller teams to develop entire games using the latest CryEngine technology (CryEngine 3)
  • We decided to continue the development using that engine as it would allow us to release a standalone game rather than staying a mod
  • In order to reflect this change, the project was renamed to Outcast: Legacy of the Yods
  • The plan was to port over the Oasis 1.1 demo, redesign the levels and add more features such as combat and in general prepare the framework in which the whole game could be developed
  • At the end of this process, we would release a standalone demo version and launch an extensive PR and application campaign to mass enough talent to finish the content, as the final  regions, more assets, ...

Now we are announcing the closed beta of this demo. More information about the application process can be found HERE.

After its release, there will be a new project page on IndieDB.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Really nice demo. I like the visuals and the art style. The quest system was also good. Just a few issues:
1. For some reason I could never save the game. I would click 'save' but nothing would happen. This really annoyed me because when I accidently got injured half way through the demo, the screen became red. I couldn't reload before I got injured because I couldn't save and I didn't want to redo the whole thing.
2. (Just a tiny issue - not sure if you can fix it) On the island there were those fish hanging up. Shooting them causes them to spin. Thing is they never stop and they only go faster and faster which actually slowed down my computer significantly. Now true, one would say to not shoot the fish in the first place but i couldn't reload because my saves wouldn't work.
3. Finally on some of the objectives it was a little annoying when i tried to find out where to go. A waypoint or map would be nice (don't know if you're already going to do this but i'll say it anyway). Obviously for some objectives like finding the fish and shooting the jars; i wouldn't expect a waypoint telling me where to go cause that just discourages me from exploring and searching myself. However i draw the line when I'm given a very bad description of which house I'm supposed to go to. I can't remember what the description was, but I do remember that is wasn't very helpful.

On a lighter note, I think you've done very well. I liked the humour that was present in the demo. More of that would be cool. I also hope you're planning to give us more to do in each level: for example in the first map when the guy told me to wait while he prepared the antidote, it seemed that i was expected to go and do something else while i waited.
But yeah, good job with what's there. :)

This is really cool and has impressive visuals and dialogue, great job!
But, for some reason, in the water, you go up and down with a lot of force and can easily launch yourself way up into the air... I imagine this was unintentional?
Anyways, because of this, I fell and died, and the animations got messed up (Cutter was just sliding around without his animations changing when I started over—I had to restart the game).
Also, sometimes two of the pots seem to be nowhere to be found in the pot part.

Thanks for the bugreport! The swimming bug occurs on some computers - actually it seems to be a bug of the SDK itself. The problem with the pots is a bug in the FlowGraph system, as mentioned in Clement-melendez.com ... sadly both couldn't be reproduced by any of our programmers so far xD (nevertheless we will see to fix that for the next release)

Nice full out mod, its got everything from new characters, custom features, voice acting, all the way through to new level and level assets. not to mention a story. Great Work!

Played through it all felt professional. I also liked the Far Cry voice of the main actor. Funny. Keep it up.

Probably one of the only complete mods for all of Crysis, that i have manage to find. Look forward to more :D

It's a true inspiration for Crysis Mod development!

Simply incredible work people ! :) Keep it up !!! :)

a few notes for improvements through ! :

1-Animations for cutter and npc's need improving(especially while standing still, stopping from running/turning etc..,need to become more flued and complex)

2-Facial expressions on characters

3-I LOVED the rear over the shoulder cam while npc's speak ! -But i HATED the generic camera circling around you and the npc....(Maybe show an over the shoulder side view of cutter when he is talking or something similar...)

4-Some volumetric sand dust while on the sanddunes and a more pronounced kicked up sand while running over them.(Also is it possible to have some distortion while on sanddunes over the sand that is far away ? For example like the heat distortion in crysis while an explotion takes place-it would be amazing coupled with the fantastic music ! )

5-More random stuff in villages are needed to bring life to the game (from generic things like ceramics, carpets, foods, stools etc..)

6-I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE starting from the snowy village Outcast started !!!

7-AND I HOPE i don't offend the guy that did the cutter voice overs...but he sounds emm...to good...too young....Maybe someone older with a rougher voice ? Cutter is supposed to be the rough, tough no nonsense hero ....:)

This mod is absolutely amazing. I just spent the last half hour playing it, and it was enough to get me to re-purchase the original through GOG.com. Excellent work.

...except for the person doing Cutter's voice. Man! I hope that isn't permanent.
