Cutter has departed, and everything is far from perfect on Adelpha.Cutter Slade

Without their godlike leader in the form of Kazar, and liberated from the oppression they faced under Fae Rhan, the talans attempt to organise their own society - this doesn't happen without conflict, and with Sidestep 2 launched, the situation can only get worse. On top of that, unseen, another puppetmaster pulls the strings.

Only one man can handle this: the Ulukai himself! Cutter will step into the String Tunnelling Device once again, and discover the truth behind an ancient mystery...

A short summary what happened so far:

  • OpenOutcast started as a total conversion mod for Crysis Wars (CryEngine 2)
  • Crytek released the CryEngine Free SDK, allowing smaller teams to develop entire games using the latest CryEngine technology (CryEngine 3)
  • We decided to continue the development using that engine as it would allow us to release a standalone game rather than staying a mod
  • In order to reflect this change, the project was renamed to Outcast: Legacy of the Yods
  • The plan was to port over the Oasis 1.1 demo, redesign the levels and add more features such as combat and in general prepare the framework in which the whole game could be developed
  • At the end of this process, we would release a standalone demo version and launch an extensive PR and application campaign to mass enough talent to finish the content, as the final  regions, more assets, ...

Now we are announcing the closed beta of this demo. More information about the application process can be found HERE.

After its release, there will be a new project page on IndieDB.

Great to know open Outcast continues to improve! It's great also to hear that the snowy beginning village of raanzar will be made.

It will be a great way to start the game ,provided some heavy scripting is added similar to the original game.

I also hope open outcast improves and adds features like better and more fluid movement animations,expressions ,breackable and movable objects and more special effects.Fore example distortion effects on desserts and dust get kicked up while walking.

I also just DLed it and played through the mod, it is a very impressive mod that obviously has a lot of effort and thought poured into it. The features you have added so far are well executed, the freetravel feature in particular works well and is impressive to see firsthand. There a some nice touches in the mod, like the lost trooper. The playermodels are very detailed and the voice acting is pretty good.

My only concerns for the mod are, that when firing the pistol at close range the shot hits the ground at the same spot quite a distance to the left of the reticule, it improves with range but it should really be fixed. Another minor concern is the stretch of cutters neck when he aims with his pistol, it looks a little odd but doesn't desperately need to be fixed. Also the quest where you are searching for the sankaar (spoilers), four of the sankaar are in logical places like in the oasis and on a plate but the sankaar that is perched on a branch in a forest some distance from the oasis is in kinda an odd place and took some time to find.

Regardless fantastic job, thank you for the hard work and I look forward to seeing more great work from you guys!

Actually there are enough sankaar in "regular" places to finish the quest and some additional in crazy places...
The combat system hasn't been properly implemented yet, we included it since an Action adventure without shooting would miss some action ;)

Even if you missed the deadline for the vote we surely appreciate your support, maybe next year we will make it to the top 100 again (probably not longer in the "upcoming", who knows? ^^)

Just tried out Oasis 1.1 and I'm majorly impressed! What you've done so far is absolutely amazing, from the visuals to the music, audio & voice acting this is shaping-up to be a really professional game, so a big huge GRATZ to everyone working on the project :)

A few things I did notice though: It would be nice if quest items didn't just disappear when you get close to them like a Mario mushroom - would it be possible to have a couple of generic 'picking up stuff' animations, and have the player actually initiate the process? I actually completed the quest to find the plant by accident because I'd happened to walk near it while exploring, it would be better if you actually had to rely on your eyes to find the thing, then use the action button to pick it up. Quite a small thing but I think it makes a big difference in how engaging a game feels.

Also, I know you've mentioned that lip-sync will be improved, but hopefully you'll also do some work on other facial stuff like blinking and movements of the head - at present Cutter Slade looks a bit like an action man with his fixed expression.

And it would also be great if there were more physics items around, it seemes a little bit jarring to be able to move the hanging fish on Loras' island when everything else in his house seemed to be glued in place. I understand there might be technical concerns here though, so it's not a major issue.

But anyways, keep doing what you're doing, I'll be watching intently ;)

The item system will get some overhaul in upcoming releases. Actually there will be some smart HUD system that points you to the location of interesting objects as in the original Outcast... e.g. Youtube.com
