I've been doing this to several vehicles as well. Are you doing it through the modeling program you are using? I have been doing it a different way and I'd be interested in comparing to see which has the best result.

The right touch with antipersonnel grenade was the main purpose of changing volumes for open hulls:

It wasn't connected with armor settings, it was linked with interaction of hull with other objects (grenades, shells...).
