I don't think fire extuingishers actually freeze things.

Well, if the Zombie Survival Guide is anything to go by: Since Zombies are dead, they produce no body heat. While a fire extinguisher wouldn't be an instant freeze by any means, I think that if you wasted the whole thing on one Zombie, this Zombie would probably be somewhat frozen. I've never been hosed by a extinguisher before, so I don't know how cold it actually is.

most fire extinguishers these days use a powder that smothers the fire and draws out the oxygen. there's no freezing involved.

This man is correct. It doesn't freeze, it neutralizes a chemical reaction with another chemical reaction.

Pretty waste of polygons on an object that most likely will be nothing more than a last resort weapon, that is before all display models and other crap. Might be good to put out fires with, but only if one has been encountered close to the fire extinguisher...

It actually uses very few polygons. The mesh is quite efficient. And it is just as effective as a melee weapon. It does about similar damage as the Sledge Hammer when used as a melee. But yes, it's primary purpose is to extinguish fires.
