Mod Of The Year 2013 Editors Choice - Best Singleplayer Mod

Please install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 runtimes before installing the mod itself!

Initial Story
In 2049, unsavory conditions are rampant throughout the world. As soon as it becomes clear that a terrorist attack in Shenzhen, China, was carried out by perpetrators with ties to international groups and that Hong Kong may be their next target - the United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition (UNATCO) dispatches their first nano-augmented agent, Mad Ingram, into the city to prevent the situation from escalating any further.

Deus Ex: Nihilum (DXN, DEN or Nihilum for short) is a First Person Shooter mod taking place in an alternate Deus Ex continuity. It features new made-from-scratch original content, while also extensively featuring material from the UNATCO Born mod (used with permission from fender2k1, UB's project leader) and Deus Ex: Revision (used in accordance with the mod's license).

* Over 13,000 downloads in its first year!
* Completely new score with 80+ tracks (over 2 hours of music
* 2,200+ lines (more than 3.5 hours of audio)
* 7-13 hours of gameplay (estimate based on testers' playthrough times)
* Three new weapons: the Walther P99 pistol, Light Machine Gun 2049, Gauss Gun (EMP)
- Exploration is everything! Treat the levels as mazes and prepare for back-tracking! While it can be baffling that people are leaving valuable items and other belongings out in the open, agent Ingram doesn't seem to mind!
- Save often and use several savegame slots! This will hopefully save you a lot of time when it comes to handling certain odd issues.
- Encrypted datacubes: Remember, once you've hacked an encrypted datacube, you have to click on it again to make the datacube information window disappear.
- General rule on hacking: Keep in mind that you do not need this skill to advance the main plot itself. However, its general usefulness cannot be underestimated!
* One of the Top 100 mods in 2013 Mod of the Year Awards!

"Aside from the weak voice acting, Nihilum would even qualify as a commercial add-on for the original Deus Ex." - Lassi Lapintie, Pelit 8/2013

Big thanks to everyone who featured the mod!

Additional thanks to everyone who voted DXN into MOTY 2013 Top 100!

Deus Ex: Nihilum was also reviewed by the most prominent Finnish gaming magazine, Pelit, in their August 2013 issue (thus also fulfilling one of my earliest goals when it came to editing games). Suuret kiitokset!

Naturally, it's obvious that you can't please everyone and DXN certainly did receive plenty of feedback from all parts of the spectrum (you can read some of my follow-up thoughts from the anniversary retrospective). However, after going through all the trouble to finish the mod, I was very glad to find out that my efforts were appreciated by fellow DX editors like Trasher64 and {zXc}Henry from Deus Ex: Revision and SilverSpook from Terminus Machina. All in all, I'm very satisfied with the reception the mod got.

Don't forget that if you run into weird issues in DXN, PLEASE CHECK THE FAQ FIRST FOR POSSIBLE HELP! And if that won't cut it, try sending me e-mail. I'll try to get back to you if I can!

In addition to having its own TVTropes entry, I'm glad that there are multiple playthrough videos of the mod on YouTube - some bringing up valid points! If you want to see a 100% complete playthrough of DXN, here are at least two playthroughs worth checking out!

To sum things up/TL;DR:
With critical acclaim from most of the players, fellow notable DX editors, ModDB and the gaming press, Deus Ex: Nihilum was a definite success! I really can't thank you enough! :]

And last, but definitely not least, I sincerely hope that plenty of great mods will continue to be made for Deus Ex. :] In the mean time, check these mods out!

Cheers, and best of luck in the future!

FastGamerr, can I get a .mp3 file of the EMP Gun reload sound? I want to have it as charging sound on my phone but I don't know what sound it is when using UnrealEd.

Sorry, man, I don't have any DX editing tools installed anymore. Try reverse-engineering the mod with the SDK :]

hi. im the Guest who had the strange error and couldnt get it started but then after a reinstall it was ok. i forgot i had an account here.

on to my review. time and time again i am simply amazed by the incredible hard work performed by people who come up with these campaign mods. when i heard this one was finished i immediately reinstalled deus ex and fired it up. it took me a while to get into the story but once i became familiar with the main players i got a lot more interested in the plot. i do have to say though, mad's voice took some getting used to. now its kind of nostalgic to hear him talk. often it felt like i was listening to jar jar binks but in a differnet voice, asking a lot of questions during conversations. i grew to really enjoy his input though. the music was fantastic and each track seemed to fit the pace and feel of its corresponding level.

the map design was just amazing. plenty of areas to explore, and places to hide while taking down bad guys one by one. i also really enjoyed how you connected this story with the main deus ex plot by including known characters and events.

overall it was just awesome. i absolutely fully acknowledge and appreciate the insane hard work put into these mods. the game is 13 years old now and people like you and all the guys you work with who put in so much time and effort to bring us fans an authentic adventure to relive the game, well its just great. i dont pretend to understand how much time it really takes, but i know in some cases it can be years and years in development and often they dont get finished. this one got finished and we all got to play it. it was so great and i loved it and i hope you do more. ill keep watching this site. thanks!

my only real issue with it was the encounters with story characters that involved combat. the conversation would take place then as soon as the conversation ended boom im dead. i had literally no time to point my gun or run away or activate augs or anything. so each time i basically reloaded my game and just shot them in the head before they got near me.

Thanks for the review; plenty of valid points!

I guess in a way Agent Ingram's voice acting can be interpreted as a side effect of the entire "creating an adult nanoaugmented agent out of nothing in 6 months" procedure, his voice simply hasn't been fully developed at the time when the mod takes place. ;]

At any rate, I'm really glad you enjoyed the mod!

Hello and thanks for your hard work. Does this mod have any forums ? I couldn't find any. Anyway, I installed with the directx9 option and when I run the shortcut I get a critical error saying "can't find file for package fgrhk". Any ideas ?

Ok I followed the kentie trick mentioned in the FAQ (although I have the GOTY CD version and not the steam one) and it worked. The thing is that now I don't have any music in the game. Sound effects and voices work fine, but no music can be heard even though it's not muted in the options. Any suggestions?

I finally fixed it. It seems the paths in kentie's fgrhk.ini (in "My Documents/Deus Ex") weren't all correct and the game didn't see the ogg files. I manually replaced everything under [Core.System]with the following and now it works :

Yeah, Kentie's launcher is quite tricky with its .INI shenanigans. Glad to hear you got it working :]

I don't know why, but the VC++ 2012 installation works fine on my end but apparently not on anyone else's... hence the instructions to install them before the mod itself. And if that doesn't work... sorry, out of my expertise :\
