Initial Story
In 2049, unsavory conditions are rampant throughout the world. As soon as it becomes clear that a terrorist attack in Shenzhen, China, was carried out by perpetrators with ties to international groups and that Hong Kong may be their next target - the United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition (UNATCO) dispatches their first nano-augmented agent, Mad Ingram, into the city to prevent the situation from escalating any further.

Deus Ex: Nihilum (DXN, DEN or Nihilum for short) is a First Person Shooter mod taking place in an alternate Deus Ex continuity. It features new made-from-scratch original content, while also extensively featuring material from the UNATCO Born mod (used with permission from fender2k1, UB's project leader) and Deus Ex: Revision (used in accordance with the mod's license).

* Over 13,000 downloads in its first year!
* Completely new score with 80+ tracks (over 2 hours of music
)
* 2,200+ lines (more than 3.5 hours of audio)
* 7-13 hours of gameplay (estimate based on testers' playthrough times)
* Three new weapons: the Walther P99 pistol, Light Machine Gun 2049, Gauss Gun (EMP)
- Exploration is everything! Treat the levels as mazes and prepare for back-tracking! While it can be baffling that people are leaving valuable items and other belongings out in the open, agent Ingram doesn't seem to mind!
- Save often and use several savegame slots! This will hopefully save you a lot of time when it comes to handling certain odd issues.
- Encrypted datacubes: Remember, once you've hacked an encrypted datacube, you have to click on it again to make the datacube information window disappear.
- General rule on hacking: Keep in mind that you do not need this skill to advance the main plot itself. However, its general usefulness cannot be underestimated!
* One of the Top 100 mods in 2013 Mod of the Year Awards!

Deus Ex: Nihilum - Wallpaper 02 - Emblem

"Aside from the weak voice acting, Nihilum would even qualify as a commercial add-on for the original Deus Ex." - Lassi Lapintie, Pelit 8/2013

Big thanks to everyone who featured the mod!

Additional thanks to everyone who voted DXN into MOTY 2013 Top 100!

Deus Ex: Nihilum was also reviewed by the most prominent Finnish gaming magazine, Pelit, in their August 2013 issue (thus also fulfilling one of my earliest goals when it came to editing games). Suuret kiitokset!

Naturally, it's obvious that you can't please everyone and DXN certainly did receive plenty of feedback from all parts of the spectrum (you can read some of my follow-up thoughts from the anniversary retrospective). However, after going through all the trouble to finish the mod, I was very glad to find out that my efforts were appreciated by fellow DX editors like Trasher64 and {zXc}Henry from Deus Ex: Revision and SilverSpook from Terminus Machina. All in all, I'm very satisfied with the reception the mod got.

Don't forget that if you run into weird issues in DXN, PLEASE CHECK THE FAQ FIRST FOR POSSIBLE HELP! If that doesn't cut it, please check if the OTP Forums have had any experience over similar issues.

In addition to having its own TVTropes entry, I'm glad that there are multiple playthrough videos of the mod on YouTube - some bringing up valid points! If you want to see a 100% complete playthrough of DXN, here are at least three playthroughs worth checking out!

To sum things up/TL;DR:
With critical acclaim from most of the players, fellow notable DX editors, ModDB and the gaming press, Deus Ex: Nihilum was a definite success! I really can't thank you enough! :]

I sincerely hope that plenty of great mods will continue to be made for Deus Ex. :] In the mean time, check these out!

Don't forget to check out this project from SilverSpook Games!!

Cheers, and best of luck in the future!

I really enjoyed your mod, FastGamerr. You did an excellent job and it's very evident that you put in many years of work. The level design was fantastic and I loved the exploratory nature of it. (I was concerned until the Queens level that there wasn't enough utilization of the jumping augmentation, but that level made up for all of my fear - jumping between buildings was a blast.) The focus on getting keys was unconventional, and I liked it a lot. The new weapons were very satisfying and fit in very well.

The voice acting in many ways captured the campy essence of Deus Ex's voice acting. A lot of the voice acting, particularly many of the random homeless, felt like it could come straight out of the original. (Tangentially and spoiler related - was there a homage to Ice King from Adventure Time in one of the crazy homeless who had been experimented on in Woodfibre?) There appears to be a common complaint here about Mad Ingram's voice acting, but it grew on me quite a bit. The music was very appropriate and well done.

Mods like this, 2027, and TNM are phenomenal and I highly recommend them to any big fans of Deus Ex. FastGamerr, mod makers like you really understand what made Deus Ex a phenomenal game and continue to riff on the same chord, making more great levels to explore and experiment in. Even if this is the last of your forays into video game creation, I want you to know that I thoroughly enjoyed your mod and I'm sure many others will too. Thank you for making this.

Thanks so much, good to know you enjoyed it! :]

(Spoiler: Yes, that was an Ice King homage!)

Just spent about 2 hours playing and thoroughly enjoying. I like the exploratory nature of it, not adhering to modern day "go to x, then on to y to 'investigate'" That said... I sure wish you'd found a different choice for the main voice actor. Most of the NPC characters are decent to excellent, but the main PC... just feels really wrong and not right at all... Otherwise though, top marks!

The mod is great, but I have a problem re-entering level Berlin Streets after the XVA infiltration mission. It says: "can't find concamera in file "concamera deusex.concamera14". What can I do to fix it? I'm using New Vision, HDTP, BIOMod and many other mods but I can't imagine what can cause the conflict.

Yeah, it's a notable bug mentioned in the readme as well.

You get this bug anywhere in DX or in mods if you try to talk someone as you teleport. Reload your save and don't try to talk as you are told you will be transported.

I'm not too far into the game, but I want to know: does this mod acknowledge a no-kill run? Or should I feel free to pile up the virtual bodies in Hong Kong?

FastGamerr Jun 1 2013, 2:31am replied:

Well, it "acknowledges" it in the same way as the original game - so no achievements for a 100% no-kill run. Yet it's possible.

Hi im just wondering if there is a way to make the UI any bigger. I'm playing on a 1680x1050 resolution with a 16:10 aspect ration which makes the Ui way to small and hurts my eyes.

Well, if you use Kentie's launcher and the default UI (not non-scaling UI), it should appear as large as it does in the DXn screenshots.
