Mod Of The Year 2013 Editors Choice - Best Singleplayer Mod

Please install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 runtimes before installing the mod itself!

Initial Story
In 2049, unsavory conditions are rampant throughout the world. As soon as it becomes clear that a terrorist attack in Shenzhen, China, was carried out by perpetrators with ties to international groups and that Hong Kong may be their next target - the United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition (UNATCO) dispatches their first nano-augmented agent, Mad Ingram, into the city to prevent the situation from escalating any further.

Deus Ex: Nihilum (DXN, DEN or Nihilum for short) is a First Person Shooter mod taking place in an alternate Deus Ex continuity. It features new made-from-scratch original content, while also extensively featuring material from the UNATCO Born mod (used with permission from fender2k1, UB's project leader) and Deus Ex: Revision (used in accordance with the mod's license).

* Over 13,000 downloads in its first year!
* Completely new score with 80+ tracks (over 2 hours of music
* 2,200+ lines (more than 3.5 hours of audio)
* 7-13 hours of gameplay (estimate based on testers' playthrough times)
* Three new weapons: the Walther P99 pistol, Light Machine Gun 2049, Gauss Gun (EMP)
- Exploration is everything! Treat the levels as mazes and prepare for back-tracking! While it can be baffling that people are leaving valuable items and other belongings out in the open, agent Ingram doesn't seem to mind!
- Save often and use several savegame slots! This will hopefully save you a lot of time when it comes to handling certain odd issues.
- Encrypted datacubes: Remember, once you've hacked an encrypted datacube, you have to click on it again to make the datacube information window disappear.
- General rule on hacking: Keep in mind that you do not need this skill to advance the main plot itself. However, its general usefulness cannot be underestimated!
* One of the Top 100 mods in 2013 Mod of the Year Awards!

"Aside from the weak voice acting, Nihilum would even qualify as a commercial add-on for the original Deus Ex." - Lassi Lapintie, Pelit 8/2013

Big thanks to everyone who featured the mod!

Additional thanks to everyone who voted DXN into MOTY 2013 Top 100!

Deus Ex: Nihilum was also reviewed by the most prominent Finnish gaming magazine, Pelit, in their August 2013 issue (thus also fulfilling one of my earliest goals when it came to editing games). Suuret kiitokset!

Naturally, it's obvious that you can't please everyone and DXN certainly did receive plenty of feedback from all parts of the spectrum (you can read some of my follow-up thoughts from the anniversary retrospective). However, after going through all the trouble to finish the mod, I was very glad to find out that my efforts were appreciated by fellow DX editors like Trasher64 and {zXc}Henry from Deus Ex: Revision and SilverSpook from Terminus Machina. All in all, I'm very satisfied with the reception the mod got.

Don't forget that if you run into weird issues in DXN, PLEASE CHECK THE FAQ FIRST FOR POSSIBLE HELP! And if that won't cut it, try sending me e-mail. I'll try to get back to you if I can!

In addition to having its own TVTropes entry, I'm glad that there are multiple playthrough videos of the mod on YouTube - some bringing up valid points! If you want to see a 100% complete playthrough of DXN, here are at least two playthroughs worth checking out!

To sum things up/TL;DR:
With critical acclaim from most of the players, fellow notable DX editors, ModDB and the gaming press, Deus Ex: Nihilum was a definite success! I really can't thank you enough! :]

And last, but definitely not least, I sincerely hope that plenty of great mods will continue to be made for Deus Ex. :] In the mean time, check these mods out!

Cheers, and best of luck in the future!

I'll have to check this mod out. I remember closely following UNATCO Born years ago and loving what it had to offer, then being disappointed when it ultimately got shut down. This looks awesome though.

I have a mod compatibility question. Does Deus Ex Unofficial Patch v2 break this mod? It uses a custom deusex.u file for fixing several annoying glitches of the original game.

Sorry (once again) for the late reply! DXN doesn't modify DeusEx.u itself so in theory, most engine enhancement mods (that do edit DeusEx.u) should work with DXN.

Unless they mess with the HUD somehow, then problems are likely to arise.

There seems to be a problem with the latest version of Kenties launcher and this mod. "Settings" and "Credits" buttons in the game menu are rendered on top of each other. Also the font used in various menu options (for example in key bindings) is too big to fit inside the text window. My resolution is 1900x1080 and I'm using Kenties launcher version 5.3 with D3D 10 renderer version 28. I have installed also New Vision 1.5, Shifter and DX Enhanced. The base game runs without problems with these addons. However HDTP is disabled, because it causes menu problems with everything else.

Most likely due to DX Enhanced, since its code is incompatible with DXN's custom UI code.

Thanks for quick reply! You seem to be right about DX Enhanced 2.0. It has some compatibility bugs. Also HDTP is affected with these problems.

I did a clean install to remove all addons (this time I made proper backups so I don't have to start over with everything if there are still more problems). I added only DXM's Labs Maps Patch (it fixes a few glitches with the GOTY maps), New Vision and HDTP. Everything seems to be working great so far. I only need to disable the JC Denton model from HDTP options when playing DX Nihilum. Otherwise Mad Ingram's face will be distorted.

Also I was able to replace Kentie's Launcher 5.2 used in Nihilum with the latest version 5.3 by duplicating deusex.exe to fgrhk.exe. So far this seems to be working without problems because I'm still using the original shortcut that contains all the important path information to launch Nihilum.
