a mod for Pirates of the Caribbean

"Pirates of the Caribbean: New Horizons", also known as PiratesAhoy! Community Build 14, has been in development ever since the release of Build 13 in early 2007. We have come a long way since then, adding much new content and many new features, some of which were thought to be impossible to achieve even by the original game developers themselves.

The intention is to provide as full an historical Age of Sail game experience as possible, both more realistic, but also more fun. New features include more storylines, historical detail, abilities for free play, variety and more customization than ever before. Not to mention that the graphics have also been improved upon, mainly with new models and textures, but also the sea itself and anywhere else that we could manage.

Although the game is called "Pirates of the Caribbean" and a lot of movie-specific content has been added, that is not all that's been done. Better still, there is a lot to enjoy even for those people who don't much care for the movies and it is entirely possible to play the game as a fully realistic period naval simulation, rather than a movie tie-in.

Build 14 Beta 3.2 is now available from our Downloads Section. If you are upgrading from a previous Beta 3 version, you only need the "Part 1: Installation Wizard". If you are doing a brand new install, use the "Part 2: Contents Archive" as well. NEW GAME REQUIRED!

Improved Role-Playing

Besides historical accuracy, we want this to remain an RPG too. So we have some new features included to specifically enhance this elements of the game.

When you start on your adventure you won't be able to get all the abilities right from the start. Some of them are now locked and each one has a separate way of unlocking. For example by buying and reading a relevant book or doing other relevant things. There will be hints regarding these actions on the lower difficulty levels.

The whole Caribbean itself is also made more dynamic. Events you read about in the Town News now have an noticeable impact. If a island is poor, less merchants will be sailing around this island on the worldmap. If an island has a large military, you will find more battles around.

The goods which an island import and export can change as well. Again, this will be noted in the Town News. And towns may need your help sometimes. If an island exhausts all of its resources on a certain project, you can go there to make a tidy profit!

Moon Phases

Yes, it is no longer "always full moon"! While not providing a major impact on the gameplay (yet!), it does vastly improve the realistic feeling while sailing at sea. The dates at which the moon phases occur are even historically correct!

New and Improved Ships

A curious ship indeed, the Polacca is not a regular sight in the Caribbean. But she has made the crossing from Southern Europe and can now be used for pirating or trading. A good all-round ship that should prove a lot of fun in the early game.

A lot of ships have been improved again, with redone rigging and new textures. But none more so than the Fast Galleons, which have had their models thoroughly improved. A great sight indeed!

Extended Storyline: Bartolomeu o Portugues

Our first-ever unique storyline gets extended once again! This time as a collaborative effort between two of our senior quest writers. With more content still in progress.

After stealing the golden throne at Havana, Bartolomeu's crew mutinies and leaves you marooned on a tiny islet. One lucky escape later and you find yourself once more in the employ of the Portuguese governor of Grenada. In fact, the famous Dutch mercenary, Johan Elting, will be helping you on this one. Good thing too, as infiltrating the city of Cartagena is not going to be easy.

Using a false identity of Spanish royal envoy to accomplish your task, you decide that the warship "San Martin" must be captured! But not before falling in love with the governor's daughter and getting into a tangle with her suitor and his men. Hidden tunnels, secret caves and a daring rescue await!

Future Quest: The Gold-Bug

While not yet finished, we want to give you a tease of what to expect in an upcoming update!

Based on the short story "The Gold-Bug" by Edgar Allen Poe, this brand new storyline contains many clever puzzles and interesting locations. Made by the same writer who created the Woodes Rogers story and with the same incredible attention to detail.

Over the Horizon

Is there anything after "New Horizons"? Well yes, of course there is! More "New Horizons", to be exact. Another update is always around the corner.

It's not working for me, but dawriter did manage to send me a PM on there. However, he does mention that not all pages load for him and of course I cannot send him a reply either. We're not there yet. *slaps head*

While I'm re-mastering the sound for the game, I think I'll touch up our POTC music pack and add tracks from the new movie into it. Angelica's theme for example, would be good for Hispanola, and Blackbeard's for the Pirate camps. I'll post that and people can download it to replace their old POTC music pack, if they had the old one.

As for my SFX project, I'm having a little difficulty with the sounds all coinciding with one another. My new sounds are WAV sounds just like the stock game's SFX, so that's not the problem. I'm wondering if I have to match the times. Say if the game's hurricane sound is 10 seconds long, do I have to make the new hurricane sound also 10 seconds?

I found my backup copy of the NATURE sound file, but I still need a copy of the JUNGLE sound file, so if someone could send me that, that would be awesome.

I'm still about halfway in the SFX project. Still working on figuring out Maya, but I've set it aside for now, so I can figure out the sound problem.

@ Legendary_Spider, aha a sound guy :) Ok i was going to try and botch this myself in Audacity, but for a good long while now i've been wanting to increase the sounds of the sea against the ships hull in PotC+Build Mod. I think there are fairly low sounds of this in the general 'at sea' sound effects, but compared to the levels for wind and sail luffing they are almost inaudible. What do you suggest would be the best way of boosting those sounds in the current file we have for the 'at sea' section of the game? I'm aiming for something a little better balanced than the current file, but not so strong as to dominate the sound track - keeping in mind that on bigger ships you would be further away from the sound of the sea against the hull(but still hear it!).


@ Miklkit - that's a shame about the Brig_N1 model, what is the issue with it? And i'm wondering if it is a locator issue(like too many etc), do you think other ships in the Build so far also have those issues, thinking on the screen clutter bug etc?


And a general question for those that know, re formatting when posting 'Features' etc. I copy/pasted my recent feature from word into the features here, but it got pretty screwed up, what should i use to avoid those kind of formatting issues in future? Any tips?

You would either raise the volume of the desired SFX or lower the volume of the one you don't want to be as loud. Or both. I'm not re-mastering EVERY sound effect, but most of them. for example, I see no need to re-do the footsteps, but I'm re doing all the nature sounds, ships sounds, cannon fire, ect.

I AM using audacity, actually.

About Brig_n1: It has been ported from somewhere else, and is a mixture of stuff that worked there and what works in PotC. There are quite a few ships like that. But it's main GM, the hull, can't be read in TOOL. I figured I'd just do what I could to the rigging and sails, but that hull screwed things up.
Do you remember the opening scenes from the first PotC movie where Jack's boat sinks and nothing but the sail is above water? I got that. Just one sail sticking out of the water.

Legendary_Spider: I can't send you any attachments. Perhaps you should make a backup install. I have an original install that I keep for backup and as an aid to making new installs.

And to further expand on what Miklkit mentions, at game install DO NOT select any of the options for graphics fixes(like Swiftshader etc) - This bit is not that clear, and will be cleaned up later in future installs i suspect, but you want the 'default' option which in no special option for graphics(i can't remember the exact wording now), when navigating through that screen during the install.

sadly it sounds like you might be one of those unlucky few that are going to have issues. Are you using a laptop btw? most people that have problems with the game seem to be using laptops. I figure it is down to the GPU's most use or the way laptops use their GPU's.

Just so you have something to compare with I used to run the Build Mod 12 Full version fine on:

Athlon64 2.0 GHz single core
1 GB Ram
Nvidia 7600GT
Windows XP

And i now run Build Mod 14 beta fine on:

Athlon FX-60 2.6 GHz dual core
3 GB Ram
Nvidia 9600GT
Windows XP

You might have to try out either Build Mod 13 full, OR even Build Mod 12 Full, to get a smoother game on a laptop? Sucks i know. Have you tried running with your GPU's settings at low(no Anti Alising, no enchanced graphics filters etc?)?

Sadly giving detailed help here is hard, and probably the answers you need are on the piratesahoy forums, which are going through big problems currently :(

I don't think it is Mamachew's hardware. It is most likely a bad install/download.

I have run Build 14 patch 5 on a P4 3ghz, 6600GT, 2gig ram,XP machine and a AMD 2.2ghz duo, 8800GTS 2gig ram, XP machine. The water looked bad, but everything else was ok.

On another note, the FTP site seems to be working again.
