The Network Addon Mod, or NAM, is a modification for SimCity 4 Deluxe (or SimCity 4 with the Rush Hour Expansion pack), which adds a myriad of new transport network items, ranging from ground light rail, to fractional-angle roads, to roundabouts, and much more. It also includes bugfixes to Maxis items and a highly optimized set of traffic simulator plugins, improving pathfinding accuracy and performance.

The changes included in NAM 32.1 are specific to ensuring compatibility with the 2014 Aspyr re-release of the Mac OS X port of SimCity 4 Deluxe, on the Mac App Store and Steam, as well as the older disc version with the Universal Binary patch on Mac OS X Lion (10.7) or later.

  • Exemplar encoding has been fixed, effectively solving the crash-to-desktop (CTD) issues that have existed on the Mac port since Apple's removal of Rosetta in OS X Lion (10.7).
  • Adds transit network paths that were missing in the Aspyr release.
  • Includes an installer for the first time.

NAM 32.1 is a Mac-only release, and all the changes to the package are aimed at ensuring compatibility with the Aspyr port. No other features have been added, making a NAM 32.1 release unnecessary for Windows.

In order to open the NAM for Mac installer, you will need to acquire a file decompression tool capable of handling 7-zip (.7z) files, such as Keka or The UnArchiver. We have used 7-zip because of its use of LZMA compression, allowing the file to be hundreds of megabytes smaller. The package contains a "READ FIRST" .txt file that will further instruct you as to installation.

A few other items of note:

  • As the installer package is basically the Windows installer running in a Wineskin wrapper, it is unable to detect Java, and by default, cannot run the Controller Compiler. You will encounter a pop-up dialog box informing you of this while the files are installing. The installer is designed to install the full NAM Controller as a failsafe. Testing results have shown that the full controller has much less of a performance impact on the Aspyr port than on the Windows version, but if you would like to run the compiler, it is possible to do so manually. The "READ FIRST" document details this information.
  • The Aspyr re-release is known to have a quirk in which the number of files (not their size) contained in the Plugins folder can cause crashes to desktop. This issue is inexplicably triggered with a much lower number of files if the user is running the game while not connected to the internet. To avoid these crashes, we recommend that the user use a tool like the cross-platform JDatPacker in order to combine the NAM files. Further instructions are included in the "READ FIRST" document.

Hi there! Nam for the mac is something I looked forward to very much, so I downloaded it, but when I doubleclick the NAM 32.1 Mac Wrapper to install its contents, the program starts, shows its menu, but no window at all, and leaves on his own a minute later. What am I doing wrong? I use a MacBook Pro (Late 2013) with MacOS 10.9.4.

We weren't aware of .tar.xz. Looking over it, it looks quite promising, supporting LZMA, and while it's unlikely we'll repackage NAM 32.1 that way, we'll definitely consider it for NAM 33.

i have the "NetworkAddonMod_Traffic_Plugin_Z_Ultra" installed, but i still feel my avenues and roads get over capacity reallly quickly. what can i do as far as the NAM goes to help really ease my congestion in my megamega cities?

If you have installed the Traffic Simulator Configuration Tool (TSCT), you can actually increase your capacity beyond the standard Ultra setting, by selecting Ultra as the "Base Network Capacity" and raising the "Network Capacity Multiplier" (which will go up to 2.0).

I really like this mod, but it really messes with the U-Drive-It missions; causing my car to just disappear or blow up for no reason. Can't it be possible to make some of the road types actually be roads and not ploppables?

As isii94 mentioned, there are draggable options. We've been able to simulate new networks to a large extent using the starter piece approach (place the starter, drag a default transit network through it, and the starter turns it into something else), but if you're wanting actual networks just like the defaults, without the starters, unfortunately, that's not possible. Even if it were, it would have no impact on U-Drive-It, either.

It is planned/under development making most items draggable by drawing patterns. There are some cases, though, where this can't be done.
