The Network Addon Mod, or NAM, is a modification for SimCity 4 Deluxe (or SimCity 4 with the Rush Hour Expansion pack), which adds a myriad of new transport network items, ranging from ground light rail, to fractional-angle roads, to roundabouts, and much more. It also includes bugfixes to Maxis items and a highly optimized set of traffic simulator plugins, improving pathfinding accuracy and performance.

The changes included in NAM 32.1 are specific to ensuring compatibility with the 2014 Aspyr re-release of the Mac OS X port of SimCity 4 Deluxe, on the Mac App Store and Steam, as well as the older disc version with the Universal Binary patch on Mac OS X Lion (10.7) or later.

  • Exemplar encoding has been fixed, effectively solving the crash-to-desktop (CTD) issues that have existed on the Mac port since Apple's removal of Rosetta in OS X Lion (10.7).
  • Adds transit network paths that were missing in the Aspyr release.
  • Includes an installer for the first time.

NAM 32.1 is a Mac-only release, and all the changes to the package are aimed at ensuring compatibility with the Aspyr port. No other features have been added, making a NAM 32.1 release unnecessary for Windows.

In order to open the NAM for Mac installer, you will need to acquire a file decompression tool capable of handling 7-zip (.7z) files, such as Keka or The UnArchiver. We have used 7-zip because of its use of LZMA compression, allowing the file to be hundreds of megabytes smaller. The package contains a "READ FIRST" .txt file that will further instruct you as to installation.

A few other items of note:

  • As the installer package is basically the Windows installer running in a Wineskin wrapper, it is unable to detect Java, and by default, cannot run the Controller Compiler. You will encounter a pop-up dialog box informing you of this while the files are installing. The installer is designed to install the full NAM Controller as a failsafe. Testing results have shown that the full controller has much less of a performance impact on the Aspyr port than on the Windows version, but if you would like to run the compiler, it is possible to do so manually. The "READ FIRST" document details this information.
  • The Aspyr re-release is known to have a quirk in which the number of files (not their size) contained in the Plugins folder can cause crashes to desktop. This issue is inexplicably triggered with a much lower number of files if the user is running the game while not connected to the internet. To avoid these crashes, we recommend that the user use a tool like the cross-platform JDatPacker in order to combine the NAM files. Further instructions are included in the "READ FIRST" document.

Special thanks to memo from the NAM Team for spearheading this compatibility effort, and to Jonathan, Sabretooth78, and TEG24601 for testing and feedback.

The team would like to thank the Mac userbase for their patience, and we hope you enjoy this new package.

Hi Tarkus. I've got a problem with NAM. I have recently downloaded it from Sim Divotion and ran into a problem. Basically, when I use the puzzle pieces, the game crashes. I've got all the dependencies and files for the game and it is compatible with my system. I've also used NAM before, but nothing like this has ever happened. My map is also clear of any TE or stations and I'm only trying to create a dirt road leading to a small village. It doesn't crash the game instantly, it usually lets me use the puzzle pieces for about 5 min. Then it crashes. I've read everything on the forum related to this issue including the stuff on this page. I don't know how to use the JDatPacker though, any help would be appreciated.

Replied to your previous post. Also, the NAM has no dependencies. Check the info in my earlier post, and also try a different city tile/region with a plugins folder that is clear of everything except the NAM.

Hi Tarkus, I have a problem when using NAM. My game crashes when I'm placing puzzle pieces whilst NAM is running. It crashes after I place puzzle pieces and the thing is, there are no stations whatsoever on the map. I'm simply trying to build a dirt road linking the main road to a small village.
Now it doesn't crash immediately, it hangs for a few seconds when it is about to crash. Do you know or have any idea on what the problem is?

I've read most of the threads on Simtropolis, but none of them states a real solution except for the one on this page regarding JDatPacker. The thing is, I've no idea when it comes to the packer since I've never used it before. What I'd simply like is for the ctds to stop. So any help or advice will be most appreciated.

First off, what operating system are you running? If you're on a Mac, then yes, JDatPacker would solve the number-of-files problem, and it's possible that's your CTD cause.

But the reason you haven't found a "real solution" is because there are so many different possible causes out there. There are other transit-enabled lots out there besides transit stations. It could be other mods/lots, perhaps a badly-modded overhanging lot that causes the immortal lot glitch. It could be the zoom bug (sometimes zooming in/out and rotating the view too quickly in certain situations can cause CTDs). It could be some sort of graphic situation. There's so many different possibilities. The hanging a few seconds before the crash is normal for many CTDs.

Also, with this dirt road you are building--are you using the SAM? You should only need to place a single starter piece and drag the street tool through the starter. Placing a bunch of starters right next to each other can cause some instability.

Make sure you've selected an option other than "Traffic Simulator Only". That option just installs the traffic simulator, and not any of the new road/rail options.

Make sure you've installed the Version 1.1.638 patch. That patch is required for the NAM to install. It can be picked up at (click the "EA Support" button on the left sidebar and it'll take you to all the official first-party file downloads).

So I have read the text file and seen a lot of forums. I cannot run the Wrapper for 32.1. HELP!

Some background. I installed SimCity 4 from Steam for Mac. Runs fine. I used to use NAM back in the day on a Windows machine so I am familiar with plugins. Never done this on a Mac otherwise. I have downloaded NAM 32.1 twice (from different sites). I used the Unarchiver to unzip each time. It placed the NAM 32.1 Mac Wrapper on my machine. I double click or run and it animates for a second each time but nothing else happens. I first had a problem with security settings saying it was blocked (since this was not from the AppStore...). I have since updated the setting to allow from "Anywhere". I have rebooted. Rechecked the settings... this app won't open or run. What else can I do?

We've heard quite a few of these, and don't know entirely what's causing it, though I've heard from several Mac users that switching unzip programs has typically helped with the wrapper issues. If you're using Unarchiver, try Keka instead.

I don't know of any mechanism in the installer whereby it would uninstall SimCity. If SC4 is indeed not installed, reinstall it.
