Neptune is a single-player modification for Half-Life 2, taking place entirely outside the mother game's universe. Set primarily onboard a mysterious and desolate cruise liner, floating in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, Neptune allows the player to slowly unravel the dark and disturbing past of the ship as he/she explores its once-grand rooms, corridors, concert halls, restaurants, bars and maintenance areas. Taking influence from games such as System Shock 2, BioShock, Thief: Deadly Shadows and Silent Hill, Neptune is an atmospheric, narrative-driven, horror-based shooter; an exercise in videogame storytelling and tense level design. It is expected to be released in Q3 2009.
In-game footage of Neptune. Taken from an early part of the game, which sees you attempting to restore power to the bowels of the ship, and set the engines in motion. But is someone trying to thwart your progress...?
Apologies for the rubbish quality. The game slowed down practically to a halt every time I tried to capture at high-definition, and even when I did manage, the file size was gargantuan. This will have to do for now.
Looking pretty cool so far :) good atmosphere
B-but I wanted that flashlight! ...
No seriously, I can't see one thing in the whole video and fullscreen isn't working.
Anywho, hello FEAR and Bioshock, goooodbye half-life 2 storyline.
Reminds me of the 'Ghost Ship' movie.
"I can't see one thing in the whole video and fullscreen isn't working."
1. Open your eyes, maybe
2. Don't watch it in full screen.
Looking real good!
Hope it's released real soon!
Whoa! Nice work guys :)
Can barely see a bloody thing. Nice atmosphere though.
Cheers for the comments. Don't worry - this three-minute segment is the only section of Neppers that's so brutally dark :)
Awesome the voice overs remind me of Bioshock. Can't wait this mod looks awesome; very adventure based.
It looks like a ship, yet the officer(presumably of this ship) says its uncharted territory?
Also since it's 1945 AND in the pacific, does that mean there's any chance of running into Imperials?
the video looks no where near as awesome as the screens, looks like its from another mod, doesnt really feel like what ive seen in the screens
Pretty creepy.
Awesome work!
Yea I was expecting one of their maps that was similar to Bioshock, perhaps this was the only map that they have finished so far?
Very interesting looking - I can't wait to play this.
Thanks for the feedback. This is indeed from the only fully complete area of the game, and comprises only a very small portion of it. The vast majority of the mod takes place in 'grander' areas :)
Pretty cool voice acting.
I know you guys are much more concerned with level design and scripting the sequences for your game but I couldn't help but wonder what the character using a zippo lighter to navigate would add to these scenes.
Either way, its cool progress.
lookinig great guys, keep up the fine work :D
doublethink: that's actually an idea we've been toying with! Have you hacked our dev forums? ;)
Promising, definitely keep watching it!
So when does the mod actually take place?
July 1945 (somewhere in the Pacific Ocean!)
I kind of liked that. I got that weird isolation feeling that I got when I played the Penumbra series.
Uh... It doesn't look as good as the pictures... sorry but the mapping just wasn't what it was... I like the paper and radio com. thing that's really cool :)
Yeah that does remind me of Bioshock too, nice work people. I like how there's just enough lighting to see and crap your pants at the same time.
I think it'd really help the atmosphere if you changed or replaced the 'dodoot' sound that plays when you activate something. Every time I heard that it just broke the atmosphere, it doesn't fit. In any case, it seems to be coming along quite well, I'm looking forward to playing it.
Well I gotta agree that nothing really looks like the screenshots but that -could- just be the video quality and a different segment of the ship... ya know... like, the non-visited MAINTENANCE area, that really nobody on the entire ship cares about what it looks like? x3
... and I still think it's odd out of all things the player doesn't pick up the flashlight in the pitch dark. <Something I hated in most Half life and half life 2 mods>
But that still doesn't give me any reason to stop -watching- this mod, I mean come on, it looks awesome.
Very nice idd... reminds me of Penumbra...
Ok my 2 cents, 1. Sorry, but that voice actor playing that 'old man' captain is too young! It clearly sounds like a young person talking yet the charcater is meant to be an old person. Voice acting is a huge importance to a game, something mod teams never care fo, I hope you understand this.
2. I know this is a Bioshock rip off, fair enough, but why does it actually have something from Bioshock? The sound effect when the room shakes and that lady screams, that scream is from Bioshock :p
1) We're well aware of the importance of the quality of voice acting and are working on getting more appropriate actors for different roles. The 'captain', though... do you mean the first officer, George? He's supposed to be middle-aged rather than old, but yes, I do agree. At the moment his VA is mid-20s, which isn't really appropriate, and will hopefully be changed.
2) ...um. No. It isn't.
This mod was talked about on this weeks edition of Podcast17: Podcast17.com
george hemmings = atlas :P
all we need him to say is
"would you kindly"
:P
I have no idea what you are talking about good sir. >_>
He's saying
George Hemmings = Atlas *from Bioshock.
I like it, though it could use some more work. The concrete textures (of which there were a lot, I think too many, for any mod) were out of place. You would never find large amounts of concrete on a ship, after all, concrete's entire purpose is its extreme density, and so a ship with that much concrete would sink as soon as it got in the water. Still, looking good!
