Neptune is a single-player modification for Half-Life 2, taking place entirely outside the mother game's universe. Set primarily onboard a mysterious and desolate cruise liner, floating in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, Neptune allows the player to slowly unravel the dark and disturbing past of the ship as he/she explores its once-grand rooms, corridors, concert halls, restaurants, bars and maintenance areas. Taking influence from games such as System Shock 2, BioShock, Thief: Deadly Shadows and Silent Hill, Neptune is an atmospheric, narrative-driven, horror-based shooter; an exercise in videogame storytelling and tense level design. It is expected to be released in Q3 2009.

What we've been up to, and a quick note on the video and some confusion over it.

Posted by on

We've had a few messages and comments relating to "disappointment with the way the game starts." I believe this may have stemmed from a feature on Podcast 17, in which the presenters talked about the gameplay video we recently posted. In the feature, the presenters mistakenly claimed that the footage was of the first few minutes of the mod. In fact, it showcases a small area around 15-20 minutes in - so, near the start, rather than right at it.

We thank Podcast 17 unreservedly for featuring Neptune on their show, and mean this as no complaint to what they said. We merely wish to clarify the issue so as to avoid confusion, and assure readers that one of our brilliant level designers is currently staging an elaborate introductory sequence that explains the set-up far more clearly than this dark section in the bowels of the ship ever could.

Elsewhere, we're making steady progress with the mod. No new media to show, but we're currently hard at work on modelling, skinning and animating the game's new weapons, developing a new HUD, and - of course - cracking on with the level design. Keep your eyes peeled - we'll no doubt have more to show off soon...

Don't take the episode the wrong way... Podcast17 is looking very much forward to Neptune.

Entirely apologize for saying it was the first maps... dunno where I got that idea, but obviously it was wrong. We will correct it in the next episode.

The podcast's great - I really don't want you to think we're not grateful for the coverage, because we are. We just had a few comments and emails as a result, with advice about how to make the map work better as an opening section, when in actual fact it isn't one :)
