Report RSS New year, reflexion on the old

A new year reflexion on the final mod release and other things relative the past year.

Posted by on

So, it's been almost a year since the final version of this mod got released, and roughly about 9 months since I left anything related with UT and game development in general.

With the start of the new year, I took some time to revisit the UT communities I used to hang out in (without logging in, just lurking) as well check out what has been happening lately.

One of the things I noted is that there were two missing downloads I didn't add back then, and those were:

Documentation: Moddb.com
Nali Weapons 3 Final Documentation

Source code: Moddb.com
Nali Weapons 3 Final Source (for developers only)

They're not new, but it's been a constant pain not being able to properly direct people to the already existing help files that are installed with the mod itself, and on the other hand I had only released the NW3 source at ut99.org. If you want to check the rest of my sources relative other mods, released and unreleased, you can check them here:
Ut99.org

Another thing I noted was that things didn't change much (same people around doing the same things, same dramas, same joys, etc), other than the overall player base and community which decreased even more, specially with UT4 under development by the community itself.

However, I still saw somewhat active NW3 servers, and over the past year and even now there are still people playing with it and making small developments with it times to times. I even discovered that just a few months ago someone recreated the Ultimaprotos Oversurrection in GMOD as part of a bomb pack (and a rather well done one at that), which I didn't expect and brought a smile to my face (the video is here: Youtube.com ).

After I left UT, as I had announced previously elsewhere, I started to make my own game in Unity, however 2 months afterwards I quit it given that I was making little to no progress due to a continually incremental lack of time (this all I made during that period, nothing finished: Plus.google.com ).
On the other hand, I was completely burnt out from NW3, thus I completely quit anything related to game development and took a long rest from anything related to it until now, and I am glad I did.

Instead, all the passion I had as a developer into developing things (no matter what), which was and is still going strong, was totally directed into my own job and my own career as a developer (not a game developer, but a web developer, which I am for years), and which brought me great results on many different levels and allowed me to reach new heights.

Now, with this new year just starting off, I feel a small flame of game developing starting once again to emerge in me, but I still don't know where it will lead me to.
I certainly won't do anything for Unreal Engine anymore (not even for UT4) nor Unity nor any of the big engines out there (too much time and manpower needed), but there are a few platforms that took my interest a few months ago and which I may or may not start to spend a bit of my time with, only time will tell (time is always the nut kicker).

Lastly, I'm glad that there are still people out there enjoying the mod, despite the age of the game, and I hope you all get a great year and that you achieve all the objectives you've set yourself for this year and for your life. :)

Best wishes

I think (and I've said it before) your talents would suit the Chaos project.
The full standalone game project could make good use of your style and professionalism.
