Multi Theft Auto: San Andreas (MTA:SA) is a multiplayer mod ("modification") for the Microsoft Windows version of Rockstar North's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas that adds an otherwise absent online multiplayer component.

Although often referred to as a modification, Multi Theft Auto is based on code injection and hooking techniques whereby the game is manipulated without altering any original files supplied with the game. The software functions as a game engine that installs itself as an extension of the original game, adding core functionality such as networking and GUI rendering while exposing the original game's engine functionality through a scripting language.

Multi Theft Auto's latest release is for the game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and is built upon a now open source game engine that has been in development for several years and is the only project that is still actively maintained. The engine provides users with all the necessary tools they need to create their own game modes and maps by exposing a large part of the original game functionality through a Lua scripting machine.

On Saturday, 22nd of August, 2009, Multi Theft Auto: San Andreas v1.0 was officially distributed as the first open source release. This release abandoned the now obsolete "Deathmatch" tag in the product name to emphasize on the versatility of the software. Gameplay functionality is solely provided by the scripting language, so users can choose or develop their own combination of scripts and other contents to customize and host their own type of game.

0 comments by jhxp on Dec 24th, 2012

We have an important announcement to make. On Sunday, 4th of November, 2012, we reached the moment we have longed for years. On that day, at 17.30 UTC we had over ten thousand concurrent players online on all MTASA servers around the world. That was more than the number of players combined playing GTA4 and EFLC on Steam at the time, or other hit titles such as Call of Duty: Black Ops or Total War: Shogun 2 (according to Steam Stats).

This shows, that after all these years there is still a lot of interest in the older GTA games, especially the will to play them online with friends.

This also shows that you guys appreciate what we do, and that makes us very happy! The current record is 11128 concurrent players, set on 22nd December, so there is still room to improve.

We have made some progress towards the next release during these few months. Here is the list of changes made by our developers and contributors since 1.3.1:
- Integrated GTA:SA downgrader into MTA:SA installer and added support for the downgrader for few more GTA:SA versions (including GamersGate v1.01)
- Added vehicle component movement functions ( Code.google.com )
- Fixes for client and server crashes (including crashes related with setFarClipDistance() function, server closing, onResourceStop() and onClientColShapeHit events, and more)
- Added a fix for dark cars
- Fixed excessive CPU usage when the player is in a vehicle and the camera is pointing down
- Engineless NRG-500 Variant should be fixed properly this time
- Updated http download manager in the MTA:SA client
- Added heat haze setting
- Added readable depth buffer for shaders to access ( Wiki.multitheftauto.com )
- Added getPlayerOxygenLevel, setPlayerOxygenLevel, engineGetModelLODDistance functions
- Conformed client console log date format to ISO 8601
- Applied patches made by community members - Kenix (volk-rus) , Jusonex, [GP_A]XetaQuake, rafalh
- Included a new code signing certificate
- Introduced a new account passwords hashing algorithm and added a sha256() hashing function

More detailed list: Code.google.com

Additionally, a new resource was added to the resource pack: an Ingame Performance Browser. There were a handful of fixes and updates to to other resources too.

Are there any graphical upgrades included in this update? My computer is not very fast and I now have a very low framerate and get kicked by console xD Any idea what setting I need to change? Precvious versions were stable.

I have set all graphics stuff to "low" but my FPS stays under 5. It also takes me a lot of time to connect to servers, maybe it's not a graphics problem?

It depends on your system how good it runs. Any ancient Pentium 4 or late Athlon XP or early Athlon 64 should be able to run it halfway decent (and systems based on that hardware are up to 8 years old by now).

However, one thing that is needed is a dedicated graphics card. It doesn't really matter too much how old it is, as pretty much all of them are multiple times faster than chipset integrated graphics "cards" found in countless laptops or low-end desktop PCs. This is especially true for Intel integrated graphics, usually called "GMA" (the intel GMA950 is an old, but still a very common one)

If you're on a laptop, there isn't really much that can be done, as these are in general not very upgrade friendly. A desktop PC however, could be upgraded as long as it's not too old (You have to take the cost of the upgrade vs. what the computer is worth into consideration)

I have a notebook with an integrated intel graphics chip, so that should be the problem. It's just strange that mta version 1.0.5 worked perfectly on that machine...anyway, thanks for your comments

It's not meant to be a co-op mod, but a multiplayer mod. Join any server and you will find something better than AI: real players moving around!

It could be scripted into a co-op mod though, well the only limitation is the inability to play mission videos and mission audio.

MTA:SA was brillantly developed, allowing any kind of game possibility. From racing to role-playing, forest mazes to hay stack climbings, there are endless possibilities. That makes MTA a modification impossible to get sick of, there's always something new to try out. And everything you need to create your own game is your brain, lua knowledge and a bit of imagination...
