Multi Theft Auto: San Andreas (MTA:SA) is a multiplayer mod ("modification") for the Microsoft Windows version of Rockstar North's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas that adds an otherwise absent online multiplayer component.

Although often referred to as a modification, Multi Theft Auto is based on code injection and hooking techniques whereby the game is manipulated without altering any original files supplied with the game. The software functions as a game engine that installs itself as an extension of the original game, adding core functionality such as networking and GUI rendering while exposing the original game's engine functionality through a scripting language.

Multi Theft Auto's latest release is for the game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and is built upon a now open source game engine that has been in development for several years and is the only project that is still actively maintained. The engine provides users with all the necessary tools they need to create their own game modes and maps by exposing a large part of the original game functionality through a Lua scripting machine.

On Saturday, 22nd of August, 2009, Multi Theft Auto: San Andreas v1.0 was officially distributed as the first open source release. This release abandoned the now obsolete "Deathmatch" tag in the product name to emphasize on the versatility of the software. Gameplay functionality is solely provided by the scripting language, so users can choose or develop their own combination of scripts and other contents to customize and host their own type of game.

We are working hard towards our next release, but for now, let's recap the most important things that happened this year:

  • Few months later, after a long development time we had finally released the MTA:SA 1.4 at the end of July. This release, aside from bug fixes, brought you some fantastic and long-time requested features such as Lua OOP (Object-Oriented Programming), user interface translations (known as l10n or localization) or the updated anticheat system.
  • Speaking of security as well, the MTA:SA 1.4 release had enforced the use of our Lua online compiler for compiled scripts. The online compiler, while being highly controversial (and rightfully so), seemed like an only viable solution to a security problem that was much bigger than convenience at the time or the compatibility with already compiled scripts. It was all explained later in Talidan's lengthy post. The transition went fairly smooth - those who were not using compiled scripts were not affected at all, and those who were just recompiled their scripts using the Lua online compiler or left the mod altogether. The problem was with a group of server owners who only had their compiled scripts without access to the original source files. This might have caused them other problems in the future though, due to not being able to edit the precompiled script eg. to add new features or comply with the syntax changes.
  • More recently, Steam users have most likely noticed that their GTA:SA installs were updated a few times in November and December. This caused some game crashes, but we have dealt with it quickly so our mod retained compatibility with the Steam version.
  • We also set new records for the number of concurrent MTA players. On 8th of November, we had nearly 22.700 players ingame at the same time, with nearly 130.000 unique players who joined any server that day. In general, we had over half a million of unique players each month (excluding February with ~490.000, but peaking on August with over 560.000 players), which was a noticeable improvement over a last year, when we never reached half a million of players in any of the months.

A lot of effort was put into new features, which you may see in the future MTA versions, such as ingame web browser (courtesy of jusonex96), custom sound and voice improvements (Cazomino05) and OOP tweaks (qaisjp). We have also worked on regular bugfixes and performance optimizations (sbx320, ccw, jusonex96 and others) which are already present in most recent MTA:SA 1.4 builds or will be included in the next major release, which looks to be promising indeed.

Lastly, we would like to thank you for your continued support. The mod keeps growing every day, and that is all because of you, our fans. Let's hope that we can make the next year even better for MTA.

This mod makes me sad. Don't get me wrong, it looks like an awesome mod but i have the steam version of gta:sa so i really can't play this mod. have tried following the installation instructions for the steam version multiple times but it never seems to work. If one of the developers or players of this mod would simplify it for me it would be very much appreciated.

Steam users of GTASA should install a 1.0 no-cd into their steamapps GTASA installation directory. This will not overwrite any files,while still allowing MTASA to be installed.

Main advantages are:
- full integration into GTASA - you can join the server, search for one, start a server yourself or change settings directly from within the game
- much bigger possibilities - you can add custom models, vehicles and sounds to your server in a way that everyone will see them without the need of doing any modifications to their gtasa install
- better synchronisation - allows you for smoother gameplay
- more advanced scripting system - we use Lua as our scripting language which is easier to develop gamemodes and other scripts in; we have client-side scripts available which you can use for eg. drawing your own GUI for a gamemode or utility script; we offer much more scripting functions and events related with the gtasa world (eg. setting game speed); resources system
- sophisticated Map Editor, which gives you possibility to create your own maps with an ease, comes with a decent tutorial
- can provide various styles of gameplay (deathmatch, freeroaming, racing, roleplaying, logical-platform modes, ctf and more) - all within a single mod, you choose what do you want to play
- open-sourced, actively developed, with new testing mod builds available everyday, also opened to suggestions and contributions from the community

The idea of the mod is awesome, but the servers are laggy as hell. So playing kinda sucks. Not to mention the back to windows fun times. So much for having a stable version.

MTA:SA was brillantly developed, allowing any kind of game possibility. From racing to role-playing, forest mazes to hay stack climbings, there are endless possibilities. That makes MTA a modification impossible to get sick of, there's always something new to try out. And everything you need to create your own game is your brain, lua knowledge and a bit of imagination...
