Minerva Review

If you're a Half-Life fan then chances are you've probably heard about Minerva, and that's because it's one of the greatest singleplayer mods of all time. Without revealing too much of the story, you are dropped onto a small island populated with combine forces and are tasked with infiltrating it and investigating what the combine are doing there.

Minerva looks and feels like it fits seamlessly into the Half-Life universe and any self-respecting Half-Life 2 player owes it to themselves to check this mod out. Gameplay is on par with Half-Life 2 and it has a great story too, which is elegantly delivered to the player through messages displayed the HUD, these messages also serve to guide the player in their objectives.

The level design in this mod is where it really shines, this is very professional and polished mapping and it really shows! The architecture is nicely detailed and intuitively designed, so much so that even the thickest player shouldn't find themselves getting lost or stuck. There are some very unique and interesting puzzle sequences throughout the mod which give a welcome break to the intense combat.

Overall, Minerva is a shining example of how good a singleplayer mod can really be, it's very well made, very polished and is essential for any Half-Life fan or source mod player. It has a great soundtrack too, with some really chilling music that really fits the gloomy atmosphere perfectly. Really, it's hard to put into words how genuinely great this mod is so I highly recommend that you try it for yourselves, you may be surprised by how good it is! I really struggled to find anything to criticise about it. I suppose some of the in game messages disappeared too quickly to be read but really that's just nitpicking.
