Military Forces Quake 3 (MFQ3) is the continuation of the line of AirQuake mods. Many of the team come from working on AirQuake2, and many have made add-ons to the legendary AirQuake. In MFQ3, the player can choose to fly planes of all sizes, drive tanks or even captain boats, fighting in a variety of locations. MFQ3 aims to balance the realism of 'serious' flight sims with arcade fun to mix an infectious gameplay cocktail. MFQ3 currently has a public alpha available for download, and we are nearing the completion of the next public release. A few highlights for the next release: - All new HUD system that looks something like TheRealThing (tm). - Tons of new vehicles: planes, tanks and boats! - Shadows cast by aeroplanes: easier landings at last. - All new Team Arena-based UI system. - Basic features of our IGME working. - Kickass maps. - Sweet guided missles! No more cannon-spamming. - Animated gear dropping/retraction.

Yesterday an F-14 pilot and his RIO stole an F-14 and flew to Iran. The defectors were sighted by long range recon units passing over the desert. The pictures taken by recon are in the screenshots section.

The F-14 is being moved over to the badguys because we currently lack the proper adversaries, and because the F-15 needs a highspeed rival. The screenshots also show the new fuel tanks that will be implemented at some point (currently they just drop and explode without doing any damage, but that should change. If they aren't done they will probably not be on any plane in the next release).

As promised I would tell you more about how guided missiles work, so here goes.

How guided missiles work in the current beta - a little preview =).

Okay, you basically make sure your radar is in the mode you want it (AIR/GND/OFF). Now put your aiming reticle over your intended target (be it a building, aircraft, SAM site, tank, a duck or your best friend's loo), and you will automatically lock onto it. A square box will appear over it, signifying the lock-on. There's a new cmd called unlock, which does just that, should you miss it (It can be a little tricky if a tank is hiding between buildings).

Now that you are locked on your job is almost over. You just have to wait for "the tone", i.e. for the missile to start tracking your target. This takes a sec or two. When it's tracking a diamond appears over the target, just like the lock box. then you just pickle the missile.

Should you be the target of someone elses guided boomstick thingy don't dispair just yet. We have implemented flares, to distract the missiles. They are not fool proof, though, so some sort of defensive maneuver might be in order.

This procedure works for AIM-120B AAMRAAMs (medium range A-A), AIM-54C Phoenixes (long range A-A), AIM-9 SideWinders (Short range A-A), AGM-65 Mavericks (A-G), AGM-88 HARMs (A-G for now, will be anti-radiation later), and it will also be implemented like this for guided bombs.

I've also put some new screenies up of Cannon's upcoming map. It's in the Levels section.

That's it for now... I'll have some more stuff for you before long. =)
