If the game on launch opens the 640 x 480 window, then stays there for a second and disappears try the following:

Right mouse click on your Mech Commander Omnitech Desktop icon.
Click properties.

Look for:
Target: D:\MechCommanderOmnitech\MCORel.exe

add " /gosnojoystick " :
D:\MechCommanderOmnitech\MCORel.exe /gosnojoystick

And try to launch the game...

Multiplayer modules had been taken out of the source code by Microsoft prior the source code release. In MCO 304 the buttons are activated but the functionallity is still missing.

Look for the file sound.snd in the data/sound folder.
Open with any simple text editor.
Search for the soundbite "mech Destruct"

change volume and save
f volume = 1.0 // Volume can range from 1.0 to 0.0

Why do most mechcommander 2 mods remove the top two guns from the blood asp and add a 2 on the name, or is this just some wierd recurring glitch on my end?

Because all those mods are made by me and at the time I did not know how to add new mechs. Number of mechs in old MC2 was very limited.
