State of the Mod: Post Alpha V.1

With our first release and getting some absolutely amazing feedback from you guys, we have begun filling those holes in the mod to really create that level of immersion that you (the fans) expect from us. In this State of the Mod, we will be covering new voice overs to rid ourselves of those pesky stock voices. As well as updated tangent models for our ships (to fix those shadow issues.) As well as give you guys a chance to ask the devs questions regard future development and help shape this project.

Let me be the first to welcome MEDiscovery to the DotR Team. With that being said we have some excellent audio taste tests to share with you guys. Now Cerberus right now is our main priority because they are the most complete. What I have done is uploaded a few audio/sfx clips to SoundCloud to share.

Voice Overs/SFX

Right now the four clips I have uploaded include an updated Mass Accelerator sound effect, Picket Cruiser(Female Voice), Heavy Cruiser (Male Voice), and Cruiser (Male Voice.) This is just a small taste of whats to come though. We plan to do some serious overhauling before our next alpha release so that you guys will have even more fun. For those interested I have included his Youtube channel below where he gives indepth tuts on how to recreate voice overs for almost every race in Mass Effect, some really awesome stuff.

Tangent Maps (Shadowing Fixes)

One of the unforeseen side effects of converting to rebellion was that we didn't anticipate having to do tangent maps. For those who don't know what tangent maps are, they are essentially something that gets attached to a model that dictates how the shadows fall on the model. Most of you noticed while playing the Alpha that shadows don't look quite right. Well we have begun to remedy the problem with some awesome help from Myfist0 of the Sacrifice of Angels 2 mod for Sins. Down below I have included a small example to show exactly how much a difference it makes in terms of appearance in game.

tangent demo

The Difference is night and day, we have been testing in game recently and can't get enough of how much better battles look with the right shadows. So a week out of our first release, we have seen nothing but positive feedback/criticisms. We hope with each successive release that you folks help us find all those little bugs we might miss in development.

Here is your chance guys, after playing our first official release what do you guys have to say? Got any good ideas? Post your questions and Lockerd, Skyline, and I will do our best to answer those questions and get back to you. With our first release that makes you all part of the team, help us to create a better mod and experience for you our loyal fans!

Your Fearless Leader

I'm not one for rushing release dates or pestering developers (it annoys me) but as a dev group with public content you do have to update your fans with your progress. Tomorrow will mark 4 months since the release, and we've had few screenshots a no patches. I understand that you have your personal lives and its summer and so do we; but it doesn't take 5 minutes to say "Progress is going great" or "Sorry we've had a setback". I personally do not play the mod anymore as the same annoying glitches (fighters & bombers) and the OP of reaper scouts now make it unplayable. I think I speak for most of the community on this issue. Please do not think I am rushing you for a release and I am very much on your side, but you have to update with progress or something.

No, the mod is free, they do this on their freetime, you didn't pay for this and they have no obligation to tell what they are doing, be already happy to have a playable version

How about you actually read the fact that he said hes on their side and not rushing them ? Plus if mod pages don't at least leave a comment saying sorry for a lack of updates or anything eventually the audience gets bored and moves on to other things in life. Before actually making a whining statement like yours and thinking you're defending a mod page think for a second about a statement before going off the edge. I currently like the playable version too as well, but after so long dealing with bugs can be irritable, as Hackett said I'm not rushing the mod team either but a current status of the mod or something like that wouldn't hurt us.

Well he can write everything but its the global content of the comment that we read, its like "i rush you but i say i don't", i worked on many mods as composer, and many things can happen in a team, if they don't update it don't mean they don't work on it or anything, its just they surely don't have time, and when we don't have time its already boring to can't do anything on the mod, and so if people complain like that its just more boring.

It just show how im right actually, peoples act like kids here and want have everything right now tough they say they don't. By disliking what i told, you dislked the fact that the mod is free and they dont have obligation to tell what they are doing.

Okay firstly, that didn't make sense you spell like a 'kid' or are one; as you have a distinct inability to string a comprehensible sentence together. Secondly the voting system is a good visual representation of what people agree with. Kyle and myself obviously make good points due to the number of upvotes. So to claim that you are 'right' in the face of adversity is just a reflection of how much of an idiot you are.

I agree with your first point: yes the mod is free and I (and the community) are grateful for that. But when you have a large fan base and downloadable content for the public to consume, you take a responsibility to keep them informed and updated. Especially within the Dawn of the Reapers context. And I can appreciate that modding gets boring, christ if doing the same thing over and over doesn't become boring, then get checked out. My point is; as a community we (strong word inbound)do not feel neglected per say just 'out of the loop' because the devs have not updated us with progress. All it takes is one dev to come onto the mod page and say "Guys sorry for the lack of updates, progress is slow right now but please be patient." Thats all we're asking for, not a full release next week.

I'd also like to say that I'm not slating the mod. Its a fantastic mod, and you can see the passion of the devs in the great models. I love the mod and the concept. I used to host community game nights. I missed parties and going out with friends to host them on a Saturday. However as of recent we do not play as the game has irritating glitches that need to be fixed and to us is repetitive. What I do not like is being called unappreciative of the mod, the devs have had my full support throughout.

You know when you work on something, one or two months can go really fast, for exemple im working on something free, i didnt give any news at the team during 3/4 months cause of work and life, but there no problem, i come back and its just "welcome back friend" that how it work when people make something, there is no schedule, no deadline, nothing of that in modding, and if they want have really free times, so they do, mostly that its summer mate, all of you should understand that most of peoples get life, so okay you are frustrated for your own reason, but modders don't want have problem with that, they will give news when time will come, you must understand this.

Onytoytoy, from the comments I have seen that are still visible, I can understand the point you appear to be attempting to make. It is easy to hyperfocus and forget to take care of other necessities such as eating when playing ME 1 for the first time in 2008.

I understand this. I have a tendency to hyperfocus myself. The issue is as follows. When any group, for profit or otherwise, states that they have a project going, and do so publicly, they accept responsibility to keep their fan/customer base informed of their progress. I understand that with a project like this, people have things that come up. That said, there is the unspoken expectation that we be updated on progress. This can be as simple as saying, "Sorry guys, we're doing what we can, but things are slow going right now." While I get that different teams do things differently, this is a project that has a history of constantly updating once every month. Usually more.

Now, with respect, the way you are choosing to state your point is, at best, ineffective and unhelpful, and at worst, disrespectful and distasteful. It would appear that you hear, but you do not listen. Hackett and Kyle have said they are only looking for a minor situation report. This is hardly an unreasonable request. You continue to drill your own point modifying your words based on the previous posts. Clearly, you hear. You do not listen enough to say, "you have a good point," or "while that is valid, I simply disagree." You appear to be reading enough to write an argument and not enough to risk ceding one.

Kyle and Hackett and I have been supporters of this mod for a while. We want this mod to succeed.

If you are under the age of 18, I can understand as when I was 16, I posted some rather thoughtless stuff on SotP and got chewed out by Canada. Regardless, I ask that you chose to attack an argument and not a person.
