Welcome Modders and Mod users,

I'm trying to fix some of the "uglies" in ME1 and give it the polished look the epic story line deserves. So far I have updated/re-textured: Light and Shadow Maps on walls and floors, Kaidan, Tali, Garrus, Wrex, Liara, Saren, Benezia, Udina, Council, Anderson, Joker, Chakwas, Colonists, Scientists, Keepers, Normandy, Mako, many NPC clothings, Geth ship, volus, hanar, elcor, some armors and default character armors including N7 armor (of characters re-textured). This was Acheived by texture editing (up-scaling, re-painting, adding details, adding textures, adding bump maps, and rebuilding normal maps). Finally, but probably my favorite, I made a new Film Grain Texture to replace the muddy Film Grain with a much less obnoxious ME2 "looking" effect. Now you can keep film grain on and still have a crisp picture.

Requests are always welcome :)

Do you have any intention of possibly doing a similar mod for ME2 and/or ME3?

ME2 yes when the tools are ready and if I can get permission from Jean-Luc to add his great textures.

ME3 is covered by many many talented texture modders and there are multiple options for characters, weapons, environments, there's really nothing for me to add there..

Hey there, I've got a small issue.

I've followed the guide as accurately as I can. I downloaded, extracted and applied the LAA patch, changed the TEXTUREGROUP entries, and want to do the dynamic shadow fix, but can't find the entries. Or rather, one of them. When I search, I find this:

DepthBias=.03
MinShadowResolution=32
MaxShadowResolution=512 ModShadowFadeDistanceExp

The first three lines are right, but there is nothing for the ShadowFilterQualityBias. It exists in other areas of the document (and I am using the BioEngine, not any of the other documents), where its values are 0, just not where the guide wants it to be. Should I change the values in the other ares to 5 orr...what? I'm just not sure what to do.

yes It should be located further down in the document you can change it to 4 or 5 and it should help soften the shadows. Sorry for any confusion.

Hey Hey
Fantastic Mod :) Thanks a lot

I have one, not mod related, problem tho.
I try to force some proper AA with nvidia inspector, but the screen is flickering once in the game. I know there are some problems when you try to foce AA, but is there any fix or any way to bypass the flickering? The edges look horrible and I'm already playing with 50% Downsampling (2880x1800)

I have a GTX 970 and the newest drivers installed. The card is not overclocked.

Cheers

If the entire screen is flickering I thing that would be caused by the ambient occlusion. Ever since Nvidia switched to HBAO+ it has never worked right in Mass effect. Disable it in the Nvidia control panel and I think it should resolve your issues. Let me know if that doesn't help and I'll see what else I can think of.

I tried what you have suggested, but unfortunately it didn't work. It's mostly light sources that are flickering.

I made a short, crappy video. AO is disabled. This only occurs when I foce any type of AA for the game.

Wow I have definitely never seen that before, are you using injectors like sweetfx or gemfx etc...?

If you use downsampling you shouldn't need any AA. My favorite way to AA in ME is SGSSAA through Nvidia Inspector with no downsampling.

Using Nvidia inspector set:
Antialiasing compatibility to "0x000010C1"
Antialiasing mode "Override any application setting"
Antialiasing setting "4x [multisampling]
Antialiasing-Transparency Supersampling "4x Sparse Grid Super Sampling"
Try those setting and see if they help.

Looking closely at the video I see the bloom of the lights and the vignette overlay built into the game are flickering, basically the post processing effects. This makes a little sense because Mass Effect is on the Unreal engine 3.0 and that engine uses typical AA paths to perform post processing effects, which is why most forms of AA don't work with Mass Effect. I think SGSSAA should help but I still have never seen this flickering before, usually the AA either works or doesn't.

Hey

The main reason I use downsampling is to make the whole picture sharper. It doesn't help with smoothing edges, unfortunately. it does in Fallout 3 tho :) Always interesting to see how different games work.

I found out that FXAA works very well when forced via Nvidia Inspector :) Edges are much smoother. So if everything else fails I can still rely on FXAA.

Your idea works :) Thanks a lot!
I hope it will help others in the future as well
Thank you again. Much appreciated.

Cheers

Glad it worked, and don't get me wrong I am a fan of downsampling I just find for Mass Effect SGSSAA is the best way to get good AA with no glitches and decent performance.

I was just surprised to hear down-sampling didn't get rid of the jaggies because SGSSAA is, at least in my mind, sort of a precursor to Nvidia incorporating down-sampling into the drivers because so many people were using it and/or forcing down-sampling in other ways.

Anyway glad tyo hear it worked and thanks for using the mod.

I have to say I don't have anything bad to say about this mod. It fixes the only downside of the original mass effect, that is that the textures looked quite low resolution, something I have often noticed (and disliked) when playing through the game. The amazing quality, a lot of painful hard work, and clearly a lot of dedication shown in the creation of this in my mind justifies a full 10 out of 10. You fixed the only thing I did not like about ME1, and I thank you for it. My re-play of the whole…
